The "Faces" art were very good. Simple yet effective:

But the art that I like the most is the one that was used in Europe and Japan for the "original one last time" VHS/LD release:

Han: Hey Lando! You kept your promise, right? Not a scratch?
Lando: Well, what’s left of her isn’t scratched. All the scratched parts got knocked off along the way.
Han (exasperated): Knocked off?!

Yeah, the Faces art was pretty nice, but I always thought Yoda looked a little weird (besides hardly being in Return of the Jedi).

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

I still wished that they would have hired an artist to paint/stencil an awesome poster for these three movies (to make them match what was done for the PT). But I guess that would have been expensive.

They did. The OT artwork below was done by the same artist, Drew Struzan, that did the Prequel posters.

No, no. I mean for this "Limited Edition" set that is coming out. Because it would have been awesome. But expensive.

What do you mean by expensive??? I think they can afford a billion of posters and still feel rich...

Well, in any case, this is what i've been doing the last couple of days..

The new covers really suck.
What does you give the most "original" feel and should be used as cover art, the new covers or the original art with DVD tags attached?

I still like the original hand made art with DVD tags better then the new cover art

I don't like the whole "Episode whatever" plastered on the cover. I don't want to be reminded that Lucas made 3 really crappy ones.

How the hell is is that Lucas made such a masterpeice that is "A New Hope" and yet when he directed his other 3 films they totally blowed? How did that happen? Because ANH is reguarded in the highest of light world 'round.

And back on the posters. The original poster look has that romantisism about it. Look at Vader in ESB. He's wearing some type of poncho thing blowing in the wind. There is action, adventure, intrigue in every corner of the poster. Luke, honorably gazing off in to some distant battle. Leia caught in the middle of danger.

The copied version? Ehh...not so much. Vader is (as someone so elequently put it) looming for that last doughnut on the confrence table. Lando is looking at you wondering what the hell that is on your face, and Luke can't believe that the Rebels left without him as he watches them fly away.

I agree. The IV, V, and VI labels were not used on home video cover art prior to the "Special Editions". Also, the "A New Hope" title was not used on home video cover art, or really seen anywhere except in the modified title scroll, prior to the "Special Editions".

I think I like the first ones in Falle's post best, for the front cover anyway.

Hell, the episode numbers weren't used until the 2000 Special Edition release. They sure as hell weren't on the '97 releases because no one started referring to them by their episode numbers until the giant "Episode I" campaign. And at least from the '95 release on, they were using the subtitle "A New Hope" in packaging, but it was little teeny tiny underneath the big "Star Wars," which is the real title of the movie.

But, yeah, I hate the episode numbers too. I didn't mind when he did it with the prequels, because, well, that's what he wanted to do. But when he started retconning the old titles, and I saw them in the same boring uniform logo style as the prequel logos, that's when I got pissed.

We need to go old school with these covers (puts her hands up in pathetic prayer) to give it the ultimate original feel.

The classic "swoon" poster. I have this one framed in my room.

This may be a little "boring" but elegent in a simple way.

This is a fun classic to use instead if need be.

On a side note, how cool would this have been for an Episode II plot segment? Damn it.... I wish, I wish, I wish George Lucas could have made the PT better. I so wanted to fall in love with those movies too.

Yes, I've been lurking forever.

Stacey: AND, the Princess is the Goth Dude's daughter!

Vader and the Emperor: WHAT!!??!

That's exactly it! You've summed it up perfectly.

Oh, yeah. Of course. I knew that.

It is a shame that they didn't. Would've been very classy, but I doubt many PT fans were even the least bit bothered by the horrendous PhotoShop jobs.

You're gonna love this quote I found on the Drew Struzan's web site

Drew speaking with George Lucas – director and writer of the Star Wars Epic

Drew: “Why do you use illustration to advertise and represent your projects? Computer manipulated photographs dominate the advertising of so many studios, but you continue to loyally choose illustration….”

George Lucas: “The kind of movies I make are more fanciful in nature, more mythical in nature. To market my films, I like to move one step away from photo- realism to something that’s a little grander, a little more glorious, and something a bit more romantic than what you get with just simple photographs.”

I wonder what the ulimate archival edition is going to look like. Of course I won't buy it (I already own the PT, and will soon own the OT), but it will be nice to see what it will encompass. 30 years is coming up. I'm hoping it's somthing brilliant. Not gay.

This is nice. Would make a nice 'Archival' or whatever release they'll do next year.
Actually I just realised it's all episode one. Maybe an updated version
This is the sort of thing that should be on Star Wars covers and packaging. This is what they deserve.

That was the custom Drew Struzan art for the 1st edition of the Star Wars D20 RPG core rulebook.

And yes, it was very nice!
For as much as some people claim to hate what Star Wars has become, they sure seem incapable of shutting up about it.

So the RPG rulebook gets original Drew Struzan art, and the OT on DVD gets MS paint crap?
