You really should check out the newest incarnation of the Storyteller system, presented in the World of Darkness Rulebook.

They've streamlined the combat system quite a bit. You have a Defense trait that is automatically subtracted from incoming attacks (not firearm/ranged attacks though, but I've changed this for Star Was to make it better fit the setting). So that’s one less roll you need to make per attack, and if you actually choose to dodge, you simply double your defense trait for that turn as an action.

Some have complained that the new system makes combat "too boring". But I've always been of the opinion that if you're letting the numbers on the dice define the flavor of the combat, then you're playing the wrong game in the first place. (I can even point you in the direction of an excellent post on the White Wolf forums where a guy gives a great play by play of a typical combat scenario, in which he sat down and actually rolled the dice, making it all up as he goes along. It’s quite a good read for prospective Storytellers.)
