If the DVDs aren't anamorphic you can always use the PAL DVDs to make an anamorphic NTSC version. That will improve the quality I think

Some Wikipedia research (cough) has led me to believe that the state of the art in 1993 was to place broadcast and consumer video masters on the D2 video format. Wiki says that D2 records a "fully encoded NTSC signal." Since NTSC is 480i60, does this mean that the new DVDs will be 480i60? Or do you think they'll at least have the courtesy to IVTC it before dumping it on the Extras Disc?

Blah, Blah anamorphic, blah, blah....

Carry on watching your LD caps instead of buying LFL's releases then....

Yeah right, I say bullshit. 99% of the people whining in here will be like excited little 8 year olds on 12th Sep running down the store the night before to be first in the queue.

just because LucASS has you by your balls doesnt mean the same is true for us...
now go watch your shitty letterboxed versions on your CRT and get out of here...

Lucas hasn't got me by the balls, I haven't got one official SW's dvd release in my collection so that argument is dead straightaway. The only version I possess on DVD is the Editdroid LD caps. And as for getting out of here I am entitled to voice my opinion on this board as much as anyone else. Just because my stance isn't the same as yours doesn't mean you have the right to silence me. What is your name George W or something?

im not trying to silence you... however i am saying that this site was to fight for the originals on dvd...
since you dont care about that you have no reason to be here...

but whatever feel free to troll around the forums..

Check out this link to the Home Theater Forum and have a look at the last post by "owner" Ronald Epstein in which he says:

"UPDATE

I have asked someone in this forum who is highly respected
by the membership to start a new thread on this subject.

It will be posted late this afternoon and all of you will have
the opportunity to post your thoughts to the folks at LucasFilm
who are now reading this forum.

You will be politely warned to keep your comments civil and
not to attack the opinions of other members."

Re: the bolded part above: If this is indeed true, and I wouldn't think the owner would make this up, we should all get over there and make our voices heard. "The folks at LucasFilm" must be reading the forum posts for a reason.

This is the abovementioned new thread here

Two excellent posts from there:

I don't know how Lucasfilms expects to sell them at $30/ea. when customers that already have the 2004SE versions don't need them and the die-hards that want the original trilogy won't buy them because they are not anamorphic. Who is the target market?

It just seems it doesn't need to be this hard and this boneheaded, it really doesn't.

let's break it down.

The people this is aimed at are the people who would understand how terribly out of date and sub-par a 1993 D1 Laserdisc Master would look when compared to the standard of even bargain bin DVD releases today from any other studio.

You've got the guy behind the restorations of Vertigo and Lawrence of Arabia pretty much VOLUNTEERING to do the work FOR YOU, at a low price, and on time(depending on if/when he gets hired), at a price that will impact the bottom line and expected profit on these things little to not at all, and as a matter of fact, his involvment with the project for that price would probably add prestige and desirability to the project that wasn't there previously, and CERTAINLY wasn't there once the Letterbox Port information was made known.

It's unfolding perfectly in front of you, and at the worst case scenario--you push this set back to late November/Early December. THAT's the worst case if you go this route. If you go the other route--worst case gets worse. Exponentially.

The gamble is that the fans you're targeting this at are as apathetic about the release as you are. And I don't think the odds are as good that is the case. Harris is laying out how to make those odds better for minimal effort on your part, I don't see how this isn't a no-brainer, especially in the face of a large and influential part of your base effectively RISING UP AGAINST YOU almost 6 months before the thing hits shelves along with a new wave of toys and video games.

Hire Harris. Push this thing back about 60 days. Tell everyone why, and tell everyone what's really coming. The ad copy will look nicer. The stories will be more postive. The word of mouth will spread. The product will become more enticing. More copies will be sold.

It seems real easy, to me.

C3PX said: Gaffer is like that hot girl in high school that you think you have a chance with even though she is way out of your league because she is sweet and not a stuck up bitch who pretends you don’t exist… then one day you spot her making out with some skinny twerp, only on second glance you realize it is the goth girl who always sits in the back of class; at that moment it dawns on you why she is never seen hanging off the arm of any of the jocks… and you realize, damn, she really is unobtainable after all. Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

After the quote Lucas made to MTV, I'm convinced they are deliberately making them shitty. He hasn't all of sudden back-tracked on his views of "his" version of the OT (and, to me, it's unthinkable that Lucasfilm, Fox, or Jim Ward were the ones that decided on releasing the "Unaltered Trilogy" DVDs...we know who makes the final decision). He wants his precious 2004/SE/work-in-progress DVDs to be the standard, and how better to do it than to create an unfair competition. He can shut up people like us, basically by saying "they got what they wanted, they're just whiners and complainers who are never happy" while selling the same thing over again (2004) DVDs. And let's not forget that this move would corner and virtually eliminate the bootleg market. It's all shit. But I definitely think if people make a big enough stink, they will notice.

The fact that someone like Robert Harris is weighing in on the whole mess over at the HTF helps legitimize things a lot. It raises the discussion to a serious level about the proper presentation/treatment of a historically and culturally significant trio of films. It's not just pissed off fanboys anymore!

What eats away at me is that people are basically volunteering their services for restoration. People like Robert Harris who has done great work on really damaged films. I've read his postson the HT forums and he's eager to do it.

I remember how Criterion would do many of their releases by finding multiple versios of a film and editing it together for the best presentation possible. But i guess this is too much work for Lucasfilm and their slapdash policies.

Let the fan edits contiue!
There's good in the Original Trilogy, and it's worth fighting for.

The only way this is going to change is if people write a real letter on real paper and actually post it. Real letters often get action, internet petitions and the like hold little water. I saw a company guy on TV one time and he said one hard letter of complaint held more sway than 1000 e-mails or 100 phone calls.
If you are serious about this, write your letter now and mail it. I just finished mine, I kept it sensible and just said I have been waiting for this since I bought a DVD player in 1996, but I won't be buying a non-anamorphic version. I already have the laserdisc, and the VHS copy. Release it anamorphic from a film print and I'll preorder it today.

Get off your PCs and get down to your post office, a flood of real mail may change things. Endless discussion here or e-mails etc won't.
Give me the OT or give me death!

Does anyone have any suggestions for additional news/media outlets I can cc: in my letter to Jim Ward?

For starters: Entertainment Weekly. letters@ew.com.

This is a widely read magazine published by Time Warner, and they pay attention to important stuff like this. Even before all of this "bad news" they were ho-hum about another Star Wars DVD release. You can bet they're watching this debate right now. The more letters they get, the better.

You're right. I even remember seeing a small article recently in EW announcing the OT was finally coming to DVD. I'm going to mail them a copy of my letter, as well as send a copy to Home Theater magazine. The addresses appear below:

Entertainment Weekly
1675 Broadway
New York, NY 10019

Home Theater Letters
6420 Wilshire Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90048

Entertainment Weekly is pretty good at telling it like it is, so to add them into it is a good idea. I think they would make a stink over it, too. I'm sure there are plenty of them that are disappointed about this not being the best quality possible, and they'd let the world know about it, especially with a little nudging.

Have a read of this shit. Don't know how accurate the quote is, but the last 2 paragraphs make me sick as a motion picture fan, not just a Star Wars fan.

Maybe we need to do what the SouthPark boys did in "Free Hat", the episode they stole the original film of Raiders from GL and SS so they wouldn't fuck with it. Where's Trey Parker and Matt Stone when we need them again.

Occasionally, [you can] go back and get your cut of the video out there, which I did on both American Graffiti and THX-1135

THX-1135?

Idiot. Can't even remember the name of his first movie.

That's probably a typo on the writer's point. George isn't that stupid.

What's interesting is how he notes being happy with THX-1138 and American Graffiti, yet he still went and mucked with them too when it came to DVD.

Haaha. Oh sure. "People will look at those and say they're a rough draft".

They looked pretty finished to ME when I watched them you dullard.

I'm sorry Lucas, I really *really* tried to at least hold off my critcism until the DVDs were out and I knew what I was dealing with. But you've managed to piss me off so much... I give up. To hell with you and your vision.

Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won't last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition]...

Oh god in heaven, I hope not.

I have never in my life wanted to punch Lucas so hard.
