I hear you, Zion. I hate when TSN shows the NBC feeds.

Matt, the only secound round series still going is the Edmonton (your 16)- San Jose (your 10, I think. I'm not at home) series. The next game is Wednesday night in Edmonton.

i'm going for sj so much right, almost as if they were my home team. but man that is by far the best series thus far into the playoffs.

Please forgive my ignorance, but what exactly is a 'series'? Is it just 2 teams pitted aginst each other at home and away?

I think it says a lot about the playoffs this year when a guy who isn't familiar with it at all is so far ahead of everyone else. Nothing against you personally, YIYF, I just think it's funny the way the playoffs turned out this year. I mean, if you would have said a month ago that Anaheim would be playing Edmonton () in the Western Conference Finals, you would have been laughed at.

A series refers to when two teams battle it out in a best-of-7 contest to see who moves on in the playoffs. The first team to win 4 games wins the series. The higher-ranking team as the home advantage, which means they play the first two games at home, and also the 5th and 7th if necessary.

Same in the east. If you had told me Buffalo would play Carolina, I would have laughed. Carolina kept getting dismissed all season. People said they wouldn't make the playoffs. People said they wouldn't top their division. People said, after they lost the two games against Montreal, that they'd never bounce back. People said they'd never beat New Jersey....I guess it just goes to show that hockey beats people.

I chose Edmonton because I was born and grew up in Edmonton, London, and I chose Anaheim because I am moving to California and also because I thought it was kinda cool that the Mighty Ducks were an actual team and not just from a movie. So yeah, I guess conventional hockey knowledge didn't mean shit this season.

Ah, I see. I think. So it's basically a knock out tournament, but it's best of 7 rather than just the one game. Makes sense. Does it continue in this way or does it become a one-game winner takes all thing in the later stages?

Nope, every series is best of 7, the whole way through. In effect, the team who eventually wins the Stanley Cup will have won 16 games through four series (conference quarter-finals, conference semi-finals, conference finals, Stanley Cup Finals). The winning team will play between 16 and 28 games over the course of 8 weeks.

So, Oilers Vs Sharks tonight at 8PM ET. I'll be watching. Looking forward to another 16 points added to my score...

I'm thinking of running a similar pool for the World Cup in June (soccer). Would anyone be up for that? I'll provide a list of teams and you rate them, just like the hockey pool.

Another win for the Oilers, another 16 points for me, and with an Anaheim/Edmonton final I think the pool is mine. I'll be rooting for Edmonton though.

Yeah, there's no stopping you now. But, do remember that Ana/Edm won't be the Final final, just the Conference final. The winner will play the winner of the Carolina Buffalo series

There are two series left. The Western Conference Finals, and the Eastern Conference Finals. The winners of the two series play each other in the Stanley Cup Finals. Why are there 2 'conferences'? Does one contain all the Eastern teams and one all the western? Why not just have one big conference?

Think of it like the AFC and NFC Championship games. The winners play in the Super Bowl.
The who and the what?

Yes, that's just it. One conference contains all the western teams and the other all the eastern teams. The big reason it's split up like that is to cut down on travel expenses. North America is much larger than Europe, geographically, and if you were to have Montreal playing LA every couple weeks, that'd get expensive after a while. That, and there's 30 teams in the league, so you've got to cut it somewhere.

As for the AFC and NFC, that's NFL football. Don't ask me about it. I'm Canadian. We have our own football league....with 8 teams

Yeah, it makes sense. Pretty soon I think I'll have the hockey basics down, then I can progress to being a hockey fan. I gotta say, I enjoyed the game yesterday and I'm looking forward to the first match of the final series. My favourite spectator sport is definitely still football (soccer to you guys), but hockey is kinda similar in that you have a goalie, a net, and not many goals, which makes it all the more exciting when somebody scores, as opposed to say, basketball, where somebody scores every 30 seconds.

I'm watching the game and I have a question: What are these 'power plays' that keep coming up next to the clock?

War does not make one great.

thats when there is a penalty to one team

the power play clock tells you how much time is left in the penalty, when a player in penalised he much sit in the penalty box for the aloted time. for this time to team that he is on will be a man short, hence it is a 5 on 4 player advantage.
