It emphasizes what a desolate hole Tatooine is, (before the prequels made it plot-point central anyway) and gives Luke more background. Plus, it would make the whole reinstated Biggs scene on Yavin in the SE make sense to non-fanboys. But, then again former Prince Charles' shagger and ex-porn star Koo Stark is in this footage...

Where were you in '77?

I've seen an even better version, in which the b&w footage, to which no audio tracks exist since it was going to be looped later, was reconstructed using the audio from the radio version. It was nearly perfect.
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

Both true. However, the early stuff on Tatooine slows down the pace of the flick to an incredible crawl. Add to that the fact that Luke barely reacts when his best-friend-for-however-many-years is killed in battle, the scenes made a lot of sense to lop out.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

It would be good bonus material on a DVD. I would not wish to see it re-inserted into the movie unless it could be done with seamless branching.

Yup, these scenes are ideal 'extras'. You enjoy watching them and also think "I'm glad that was cut". All those who hadn't sen these before, download or trade for Deleted Magic now - you won't be disappointed (and get Building Empire while you're at it).

Yeah, all scenes like that are interesting... but they should stay as "Deleted Scenes" (assuming we ever get any). That way, we don't miss out on background information, and they seem even cooler because not everybody's seen them.

EDIT: I actually posted that before I watched it. Damn, that first part, with Luke running to the landspeeder looks horrible! It looks as old as something from a 1920s silent film! It's sad how fast film can deteriorate if allowed. The rest of the scene. I'd seen it part of it silent before, but it was a lot cooler with sound and with the whole thing there. It's actually a reall good scene and gives a lot of insight into not only Luke's world but the Star Wars world. It would be nice to have on a DVD as a deleted scene.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

The black and white scene is from the workprint i believe--its not the original neg.

I didnt like the music editing, ruined the scene. The Deleted Magic edits of the deleted scenes are by far the best.
