New DVDs NOT 16x9 — Page 6

It seems that someone named Matt Stevens over at AVS forum had some inside info as far back as May 6th that these DVDs were going to be everything we feared. Seems that Jay also knew last week but was still holding out some hope.

The SE are the movies. Period. End of story. The OOT is now a earlier draft of Star Wars.

A draft that was beloved by everyone for 20 years? Sorry to burst your bubble, but the OOT has been out a hell of a lot longer than Lucas mind boggling "definitive" version.

How would you feel if the director for Gone With the Wind went back and altered the movie and gave Atlanta a much bigger burning scene, filled with huge explosions and balls of flame because the movie was only a 67 year old draft and the "technology" didn't exisist back then to make bigger burning scenes.

....Just like the technology to hire a younger actor for the end scene in ROTJ didn't exist in 1983 so Lucas had to put Hayden in there 2 years ago.

He would probably love it.

Since we're getting into this topic of discussion again, I just want to add this thought I'd had.

Does anybody remember the intereview on the '97 SEs? The part where he quotes the "films are never completed, just abandoned, and rather than just leave my abandoned movies, I wanted to go back and complete them?" At 11 years old, I was thinking, "Well, wait, if they're never completed, then how is this Special Edition supposed to be the completed version? Even if he updated again, it still wouldn't be complete by that logic." So I guess I forsaw the '04 editions seven years before they were released.

There is no lingerie in space…

C3PX said: Gaffer is like that hot girl in high school that you think you have a chance with even though she is way out of your league because she is sweet and not a stuck up bitch who pretends you don’t exist… then one day you spot her making out with some skinny twerp, only on second glance you realize it is the goth girl who always sits in the back of class; at that moment it dawns on you why she is never seen hanging off the arm of any of the jocks… and you realize, damn, she really is unobtainable after all. Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

My letter to Jim Ward is in the mail today. Everybody must get on board with this if we're to have any hope.

Quote from Jay over at AVS: "Supposedly, Lucas is gauging public response to the potential sub-par quality of the OOT and will only give it a "proper" release if the backlash is too much to ignore."

So PLEASE write and be firm but polite.

You have NO IDEA what a true artist is. That much is obvious. When the movies were release to the public, they became partly ours. We bought them, we paid for them. We made Lucas what he is today. Without the fans, and I am talking about life-long 30 year fans, he would be nothing. It is all about respect. For culture, history, the fans and the industry.

An artists work is NEVER complete. If a painter sold a painting, then 20 years later decided he wanted to 'fix it', can he go to the house or gallery and do what he wants to it? All we are asking for is a nice high quality version of the 3 original films. Is that too much to ask for? Considering we have paid for them again and again.

You're so far off it's amazing.

They do not become partially yours. You're buying a ticket to look at someone else's work. When you go to the Louvre to look at the Mona Lisa, is it yours?

No? Why not? You bought a ticket and a mug with the Mona Lisa on it? I guess according to you, you're now the proud owner of the most famous painting in history. And so cheap. How frugal of you.

Where do people get this from? Honestly.

Without the fans, there would still be Star Wars. What did fans do to get the movie made? Did help the movie get made? Did you help with the screenplay, the SFX, the editing, the lighting? Nope. You did nothing. You bought a ticket and watched it. That's it.

And then you drop this one: "An artists work is NEVER complete." I guess you believe that unless it's the SE, right? Star Wars is the one piece of art that phrase doesn't apply to?

And if a painter sold a painting it's not longer the artist's work. He sold it. It's gone. The painter hung it in a gallery with the intention of selling to someone. Once you show your work at a gallery, you're agreeing to part ways with it. You're willing to let the work become someone else's. If the artist hangs it in a museum he's not agreeing to sell it. He's letting people look at it for money. Hmmmm. Kinda sounds like a movie theater.

A movie theater isn't a gallery. GL didn't sell you Star Wars. A movie ticket and some action figures doesn't grant you ownership. That goes for paying again and again and again. Stop buying if you get so pissed. And when you stop buying its still his movie.

This logic that SW is somehow partially yours is bogus and dead wrong. But people don't seem to understand that.

"Among many things I have to be thankful for are you, the fans. I know that some of you haven't liked every single thing that I've done with the saga, and that you have a strong sense of ownership over all things Star Wars. But take that passion and devotion and channel it into a creative project of your own."

No, but the feelings and emotions that we've all had for the original theatrical editions of Star Wars
are in fact ours, and you can't take that away from anyone, much less criticize their desire to hold on to it.

You like the SE's, which is fine. I just question your motives. Why come to a site dedicated to preserving the original Star Wars films and make a little over 20 posts which oppose everything this site and its' members stand for?

If we hadn't bought tickets (and we bought a LOT of tickets) back in '77, Star Wars would have died and there would be one forgotten film not six movies in a franchise. So your "You bought a ticket and watched it. That's it." comment doesn't hold any water. Lucas would be NOTHING today without the fans that he now sticks his middle finger at.

I don't know how to make it more clear to you. Does the term released to the public mean anything to you? What about the VHS and Laserdisc copies I own? Are you saying they are not mine? Did Lucas see no money of that? And what you said about who made the films.
screenplay, the SFX, the editing, the lighting Did George do all that himself? I don't think so.

When I buy a ticket to look at a painting in a museum, who gets the money? Think about it.

And if you think that Star Wars would be alive today without the fans, you are leaving in a fucking dream world. Lets face it, if Lucas quite Star Wars, we would have nothing. He holding on to it like grim death. He can't let it go. Because he has his own enemy. It is now all about money. And that is the wrong reasons.

And then you drop this one: "An artists work is NEVER complete." I guess you believe that unless it's the SE, right? Star Wars is the one piece of art that phrase doesn't apply to?

What the hell are you talking about? Who said the SE's are complete. George did. Then he keeps changing them.

The movie would still exist. Somewhere, the reel would exist. You don't have to make money to be a filmmaker. You have to make movies.

You bought a ticket. You gave money to look at someone else's artwork.

You want to own a movie. Go make one. Instead of bitching about someone else's for years.

We should contact the San Deigo Star Wars Fan Society or what ever it is called. They have 35mm prints for SW, ESB, and ROTJ, and there SW print doesn't have ANH on it. They might be able to help us somehow by transfering there film print to dvd for us or something?!?!

And with that, we see yet another shit-disturber come and go. JediRandy, I'm not going to miss you.

Say hi to Rick McCallum when you crawl back under Lucas' desk.

Bye Randy. Guess you have nothing more to say.

Not to fanboy's who bitch and moan endlessly for years. You guys hear what you want to hear. You twist things to fit your bitching and moaning ways. You call me a sheep while you all sit and complain about the same shit for years.

Have fun with YOUR movie. Which apparently costs a movie ticket, some popcorn and a piece of plastic in the shape of Luke Skywalker.

Oh, I'll probably be back. You'll miss me if I'm gone too long. Plus you guys'll get bored complaining about a new Wampa scene.

Oh wait. If you're not bored of talking about it by now you never will be.

Okay, let's try this again, Randy. Why? Partially because I'm curious as to what you think, and second because I like to keep the peace. I'm Canadian. Sue me.

As narrow as the screen on your OOT discs?
