Noticed in that link it says we'll now have the 1997 and 2004 versions - !!!! aghhhhhh! hahahaha - of course this is a typo but bet it got a few souls worried ;-)

Can't wait for this release - I only came to Star Wars (the films) in 1980 with a double bill with Empire (WHAT an introduction to cinema - will never forget it!), prior to that is was the figures, novels and radio series!! Will be cool to see the original 1977 version, i just hope they include the original mixes (mono and stereo).

Well, The Digital Bits has just confirmed that the official theatrical DVDs will be non-anamorphic.

And here are the photo-montage DVD covers:

Even if they are letterboxed, they'll still be the best version of the OT on DVD.

But the covers will still suck.

"they'll still be the best version of the OT on DVD."

Just not the best that LFL is capable of making. I'm reminded of a saying another teacher has ay my school: "It's better to aim for the stars and miss, than it is to aim for the mud and hit it."

Meager transfers, crap covers. What a wonderful time to work for LFL. I'm so proud of those folks.

JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.

MeBeJedi: You aren’t one of us.
Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.

JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.

I am glad we are getting the OOT finally on DVD but the transfers I have received via this site from all here are looking better and better. Glad I have them and I will be keeping all of them. I will still by the new ones but they will be added to my other transfers as an additional set with cover art created by someone here. The extra 2004 versions will make nice shiny circle clocks on my basement and computer room wall.

Fuck it - give us the pan & scan trilogy considering that's what most of us grew up watching anyway. Least they can't fuck up something that already sucks.

EDIT - I just read what the 'Bits wrote and it is full of choice words like "probably" and other uncertainties. What is their elusive source that has confirmed this?

I still want me some pan and scan then...

Is there a pan and scan version coming out or is it just the widescreen version we are getting???

True. They could've hired MBJ for a frame-by-frame cleanup.

BTW, Russ - there will be P&S as well.

Sorry...another, better version already has dibs on me.

Bugger. That means I will end up buying the PAL Widescreen version to watch on the 12th and then importing the US NTSC Fullscreen and Widescreen versions as I hate the PAL speed-up thing.

We do not get the Fullscreen versions of the DVD's in the UK.

September will be an expensive month for me!!!

You may find the PAL edition has true pitch, despite the higher frame rate. Did anyone check the '04 discs for that?

How about LFL releases only widescreen (they are being called the "theatrical" versions, after all), and then people here at OT.com will have something to bitch about for the next several years? Think of the cool projects that could be started: making the best possible P&S versions from the WS versions, lovingly reproducing the creative decisions made by some telecine technician in about 1982.

Dude, any idiot can crop their letterbox edition and make their own pan and scan version. Leave the rest of the consumers out of your psychosis. Heck some DVD players can even do it automatically.

Anyway, that thud you hear is fan reception to the official release, but just remember one thing:

DVDs are all about the upsell-re-release. Turn out fast crap and then sell it again later anamorphic or with DTS or other added content (trailers).
I wouldn't worry about the upcoming discs (I also wouldn't buy them either).

Oh well. I'm glad I like my transfer (which for the record has more lines of resolution than the DVD will have). (Grumble grumble letterbox crap.)

Screw Lucas.

I'm renting them and copying them. Not worth the money to buy them.

It will be on various torrent sites by August.

Good chance for the fan editing to begin anew.

Makes me wish I had the tech know how and the time to do an edit myself, just my way of giving the finger back at Lucas.
There's good in the Original Trilogy, and it's worth fighting for.

They no longer exist or else there will be a big surprise for the 30th year anniversary?

Thank goodness for the fan edits here. I thought I would be purchasing these come September but since there are better versions available here, I'm keeping the ones I have. Does anything come out non-anamorphic anymore? I think Lucas is still trying to milk this one out. Many many people bought the 2004 dvds. Many more will buy these when released in September. Then come 2007 for a 30th anniversary the anamorphic ones will come out. Then later HD format will come out. This is a business after all but I for one am not falling prey to purchasing these over and over again. X0 lives on!

I don't think anyone has posted this quote yet, so:

Lucas claims he's not re-releasing the originals to appease fans, but rather to bate them. "Now we'll find out whether they really wanted the original or whether they wanted the improved versions," he said. "It'll all come out in the end."

That's from MTV Movies news <http://www.mtv.com/movies/news/articles/1531527/story.jhtml>.

So that's it, isn't it? Release an inferior release and gloat when no-one buys them.

That quote was posted previously in General Star Wars Discussion.

That makes no sense whatsoever. LFL is interested in making money out of this, above all else.

I think you are vastly underestimating Lucas's HUGE GALATIC EVER GROWING LARGER THAN LIFE EGO.......the man is an ego maniac....
Don't think for one minute that this isn't some sort of experiment.....Lucas doesn’t even need this release to break even, if it tanks,
it proves his point that people really didn’t want the original version…..and the man's ego blossoms even more.....

I love everybody. Lets all smoke some reefer and chill. Hug and kisses for everybody.

Well, at least I don't have to worry about saving up my money now.

Galatians 2: 20: I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

isn't the editdroid set non-anamorphic with the original 1977 crawl?

and, we already have that.

Yes, but it's master > submaster > laserdisc > Beta SP > PC capture > DVD
As opposed to master > PC capture > DVD

All the widescreen preservation DVDs are from letterboxed sources.
