Technically Nintendo could drop out of the console business entirely. They make ridiculous gobs of money off their handhelds. Keep in mind also that the big N' MAKES money on each console. That includes the DS, GC, GBA. etc. They posted their first loss EVER in that dry spell between the gc and the DS. As far as businesses go, nintendo is the ONLY successful business in the market in that they continue to make money. What makes that interesting is that nintendo still never fails to rock the boat. The game boy was and is huge. They could have just brought out bigger and newer and faster game boys, there is NO competition (psp doesn't count). If it was sony, they would just keep releasing psp2 psp3. Instead, nintendo goes and releases a completely new handheld, with nothing in it for them, just for us, the gamers. Admitedly it did get huge, but that was because they were right, it IS fun. Think about it, what company completely changes their game-plan nowadays? NOBODY. That just goes to show that nintendo cares. They don't go the tried and true route. Say all you want about 'they were tapping the demographic'. They didn't KNOW they could tap that demographic. The risks far outweigh the gains and in business speak that is suicide. It's the same with the wii, I think that regardless of what MS and Sony did, nintendo would have released the Wii regardless. The DS just proves that they know that new games are needed.
