Guess laserdisc isn't really dead with THX 1138 and Song of the South not on dvd. Yeah, I haven't been able to finish THX. I have the original on dvd and I have just not had the attention span. Even the camera work seems designed to alienate the viewer from connecting with it. There's already a 2 disc set of the film and releasing it again with the original cut would not be worth it, from a business standpoint. I hope Lucas considers putting the original cut on the blu-ray or hd discs because they certainly will have plenty of room for it with the new version and bonus features.
As for the prequels not having the used future look, well that's the point. It makes sense of how everything was all shiny and beautiful during the republic. The era during the empire was mechanical and soulless with so much of what we saw industrial and military. Generally, I prefer the pretty fantasy world over the gritty used future science fiction world. I think one of the biggest advancements in movies (not just Star Wars) from the 1977 to today is much more detailed set building and more realistic makeup. Maybe even more an advancement than special effects.

I'm curious if you guys are anywhere near to posting something like a clip so we can see a work in progress.
Screenshots always look different than a moving clip.

Umm...
Not trying to try and destroy this extremely extensive project, but now that Lucas is releasing the OOT, will you still be doing this?
Or is this more of a 'super-duper-ultra-quality' restore?

Urp. I guess I need to stop jumping to the end...

Well, it looks like the X0 Project just might be better than the official release which will be non 16x9. I definitely know what I am not buying in September unless there is a major change.

I'm hoping to send my first X0 donation by early next month. Keep up the good work guys because Lucasfilm surely isn't.

WTF? Where did you hear this? I think we need an official thread for original DVD news pinned somewhere.

MeBeJedi, what do you think you're doing? Stop wasting time posting on here and get back to work on those transfers...............(as I post this humorous reply that was done completely in jest , the sound of thousands of OOT X0 Project hopefuls snap their whips in unison on MeBeJedi's backside, he yelps and gets back to work...........) *Snap* *Wicchh*

Seriously though, I honestly could careless at this point about the Official releases coming out........my money is on the X0 team.

I love everybody. Lets all smoke some reefer and chill. Hug and kisses for everybody.

Ahhh look, it will be interesting to compare, and people may prefer one over the other but really even the X0 guys have said the Lucas release should be a much better master than the laserdiscs.

What is interesting is how much they are cleaned up or not from Lucas. I expect more detal on the Lucas release, but perhaps a better look and feel on the X0 stuff, but who knows.

I take it back!
We've confirmed something today (directly with both Fox and Lucasfilm) that we'd begun to suspect... and it's probably going to disappoint a lot of you. It certainly disappoints us here at The Bits. Those new DVD editions of the Star Wars films? The original theatrical versions of the films are going to be non-anamorphic (our original post on this indicated otherwise, but we have confirmed that the widescreen versions will be letterboxed only). What this likely means is that Lucasfilm has simply re-purposed the non-anamorphic transfers that were done for previous laserdisc and VHS releases of the "original" versions of the films. And with that, our enthusiasm for this DVD release has just dropped through the floor. Anamorphic-enhanced versions of the theatrical editions, we'd buy in a heartbeat. But what we're going to get instead is little better than a ported-over laserdisc. In this day and age, releasing a widescreen film without anamorphic enhancement on DVD is just unacceptable. Does Lucasfilm really think fans want those versions of the films on DVD so badly that people just won't care? Yes Virginia, they do. How many versions of these films do you suppose Lucasfilm will try to get fans to buy in high-def over the coming years? And think about it... you just know the studio has to be prepping yet another standard DVD release for next year's 30th Anniversary of the original Star Wars. Do you suppose this means that the theatrical editions won't be included in the super-über box set of all six films? Probably. Ugh.

Line up like Jersey cows and grease up yer teats, Force fans. Or better yet... run for the south forty as fast as your hooves'll carry you. Stampede!

Yup, so the "Official Release" no longer has much of a resolution edge on the X0 project.

So unless LucasFilms does some serious clean up and corrections on it, it's likely going to be much worse than the X0 project.
Which frankly if they can't be bothered with anamorphic, I don't think they have anybody doing frame by frame flaw removal.

I think that the XO project may become more important, with the upcoming release, if for nothing else but to show what Lucasfilm should of done. From the news coming out, I'm starting to get worried that this may be a spite release, even though at first I thought that would be impossible. So the XO project could produce a much better video.
Author
Time
Well hopefully it is still coming off film, which should still give much more detail than the composite video encoded into the LDs.
But with it not being anamorphic then we are only getting 270 or so lines of resolution in letterbox. Whoopeeeeee.

Whaddya wanna bet all the same ghost-like trails we complain about from the Faces/DC LDs are there on the new release? 'Cause it's sure sounding like LFL is just gonna take their master tape from '93 and stick that on DVD.

Didn't the press release say something to the effect about "the technology of that year"? Sounds to me like we can expect the ghosting.

Just read the news about the laser disc vesion being transferd and not a fresh, refurbished one...

I guess I'll just wait for this to be finished then.

I, for one, would just like to thank LFL and Mr. Lucas for making our project even MORE relevant than ever before.

Guys, I'll be on "vacation" after next week. Work pace will definitely increase at that time.

God bless you guys.

Maybe the official disk will be of equal or slightly-better quality but god bless you guys for caring when Lucasfilm doesnt.
