Then 'giving in' after pressure from the public and releasing new versions AGAIN and saying the original will come with it... then finding out the original is mastered from a cassette...... Then having them smugly saying the new one is better quality and "I told you so".... Just not on and NOT at full bloody retail price!!! PLUS many of us already have the 2004 editions now anyway and we have to get these AGAIN with the original release. It's F-ing obscene marketing!

Perfect analogy.

Yes it does say widescreen, but it isn't anamorphic widescreen which is our beef - we are losing 33% (I think?) resolution here for a fully priced THX certified product....

guys, read the box art, it says WIDESCREEN at the top of all three of them. This story has got to be wrong. I don't read the bits that much so I won't trust them on this one. Remember, Lucas doesn't want these versions to out-sell his shiny SE. I think he had someone lie to the bits knowing that word would get out before the Sept. release. He's playing with our heads, just wait it out and see. Don't count your chickenss before they hatch.

Good point.

And your going to watch them on a crt that can only show half the resolution at any one time whether anamorphic or not.

Once we know for a FACT they are non anamorphic I shall send a polite e-mail to 20th Century Fox (who have Lucasfilm by the nuts lets face it as far as DVDs are concerned!) saying they will be killing sales if this release isn't anamorphic. Anyone with me on this?

And Eros I will be watching them on a projector mmmkay?!? But that's NOT the point.... would you - for example - pay for a full price limited edition collectors CD of an all-time top selling favourite album knowing it was mastered from a tape?!? And willingly pay full price?!?

I watch on a TFT display so it makes no difference to me.

Fine good for you - why knock the rest of us though or are you just here for an argument?

You bet I'm with you seventiesfilmnut! As a matter of fact I think it would be quite appropriate for all of us to send MANY polite emails to FOX once/if this bad news is made official.

That, my friend, is eros in a nutshell.

Cool nice one Dean :-)

Anyway with a bit of luck this will turn out to not be true anyway - from what I have read it does appear that 35mm versions of the original films were chemically washed recently, and I fail to see how they'd then drop the ball after all this effort with a bog standard non anamorphic release, when all the original trilogy film clips on that EOD DVD are anamorphic... makes no sense at all unless the films weren't washed at all and we are getting a D2 master port? But THEN they'd have to computer generate the original titles sans the 'The Hope' Episode IV bit.....

We need to wait and see I guess unless anyone else knows anything more concrete?

So, what percentage of Joe public do you think won't buy this because it's not anamorphic?
Author

Less people in Europe will buy it because we are more used to making use of 16:9 anamorphic on our 16:9 TVs. I( understand that 4:3 TVs are still quite dominant in the USA.

Yes a large proportion, and not only that, by the sounds of it sites like The Digital Bits and DVD File etc etc etc will be complaining about this extremely vocally I should think, so the general public will be aware theyare buying a substandard product.... AGAIN if true...... You don't treat valuable pieces of film history like this.

If this is true we'll ALL just have to club together, buy good quality 35mm versions and get those transferred somehow - hahaha! ;-) (I AM joking by the way!!!)

oh and Eros just to clear things up, whilst being a HUGE Star Wars fan, I am also a fan of great cinema in general, and film preservation. Obviosuly Star Wars is a VERY important film for many, especially those that grew up with the originals way back when... They need to be preserved as well as possible for future generations to enjoy in the best quality possible for each medium. With the resourses and money at Lucasfilms disposal this is entirely possible... in fact the more I think about it the more I just cannot see that this release will not be anamorphic.

With the non-anamorphic transfer, the horrific PhotoShop DVD covers, and the "limited time only" fish hook, Lucas better think twice if he thinks he's getting my green for this shlock.

How soon does everybody think we'll see a blue ray DVD release of anything Star Wars?

You know, this is like a bad dream. Why won't Lucas just give the fans what they have been asking for? He can only stand to gain from it.

what percentage of Joe Public would buy it in the first place? Joe Public has already bought the fullscreen 2004 SE.

This is for us. For the people who care about widescreen and anamorphic transfers.

I'd have thought they'll be a complete saga boxset on DVD first.

Oh good lord, great. So I say to wait for confirmation. I get confirmation. CONFIRMATION THE WRONG FUCKING WAY, LUCASFILM.

So, I've emailed Jay about the front page. here's my thinking: Last time there was a huge fuckup on the Lucasfilm part that Neil ended up getting right, a few of us at the HTF set about digging up Lucasfilm contact info: Snail Mail addresses, phone numbers, the whole shlemiel. We found them, and we posted them, and we exhorted people to contact the company DIRECTLY about it.

This needs to happen again. I don't have that info on me right now, I'm at work, but I'm thinking we get that info, we slap it on the front page of this site, and we urge people to write a letter, email, call em, and let em know, because in the face of First's latest post, it doesn't sound like we have much time to at least get this thing 16x9.

Sure, bitching about it on the net (and there's gonna be PLENTY of fucking bitching if Hunt isn't wrong, which he rarely is) is going to feel good, but with such a small window where we can actually EXERT some sort of influence, however small, it'd be a crime not to.

70,000 people got us this far--we can try just a little bit harder to do this justice, right?

AND IF Bill does end up being wrong--then this will simply be reinforcement to them that they made the right choice in going anamorphic. But if Bill's not wrong, we need to give em an earful. Not a messageboard earful, but a REAL earful. Phone messages and tangible letters.

Agreed - lets all be polite about it though we won't get anywhere ranting and raving. Front page idea with all the addresses is awsome! Perhaps get The Digital Bits etc to advertise this as well..... sure they'd be up for it.

Damn....Biz is on FIRE! Gimme some of dem numbers and addresses, boy!

Do you remember what the general date was? You could ask Neil. That might help narrow the search.

It almost seems as if it would take MORE effort to make the movies non-anamorphic. I can't imagine the Lucas film guys going out of their way to do that. Lucas technically isn't the one pushing these out. It's the higher-ups and the crew that are pumping this out, and from what I've heard over the years, they are heavy into the originality of the originals.

Besides, they've washed the old versions. Why wash them, if they weren't going to use them? Like I said, when transfering to a digital source, it's automatically anamorphic. They would have to go and actively click the button that says "non-anamorphic" before transfering.

And most things today are anamorphic anyway. None of this makes sense, and I'm going to wait it out. Hell, I'm not even going to buy the DVDs right away. I'm gonna give them a month and read the reviews before I buy them. Just like I did in 2004. Saved me a cool $70 and my pride in what I believe Star Wars should be be presented in.
