Thanks for the explanation, Neil. I can't say I'm too surprised either.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

This is terrible terrible news IF ITS TRUE. Digitalbits seems to think it is. If thats the case i may just keep the laserdisk ports we have.

BUT

As someone pointed out this is completely nonsensical. Because Jim Wars said the prints were from 1993. The film was restored in 1993 and news prints were made--which is what i assumed we would be getting. If this is a non-anamorphic LD transfer then why the hell would you not use the superior 1995 video? In fact, Jim Ward seemed to imply that they would be from prints, not an old video telecine.

Also, Jim Ward said he was looking forward to this release for some time and is happy to finally get the go-ahead--why completely ruin his reputation?? As Digital Bits pointed out, this is completely unacceptable in todays world. I cant believe anyone at LFL would be so idiotic.

This simply doesnt make sense. Despite the fact that i utterly trust and love The Digital Bits i am not believing this until I see it.

"But remember that this contradicts Darth First's information. So I'm waiting to see."

Yeah me to - I don't doubt the Digital Bits are telling it as they heard it, but it does seem a bit implausable even for Lucasfilm. I mean NOTHING is released these days that's non anamorphic film-wise is it? And this is meant to be THX for firks sake!

The 1993 video transfers are THX certified.

Neil

Well at least the reversed surround channels have been addressed.

...but back in 1993 they WERE state of the art - not so today.

I think this means then that we are not getting new transfers from film prints, OR it would be in anamorphic. And if they ARE new film transfers, then the decision to go non-anamorphic is deliberate which is troubling...

I'm surprised by this sudden uproar as well. We had the whole "will they be anamorphic?" discussion when the release was first announced. I think it's pretty unlikely, but certainly possible. Either way they'll be better than LD rips.

If the prints were washed for this release (meaning a new transfer), there's no way it'll be letterboxed. I don't believe in this whole "deliberately inferior" conspiracy. If they're letterboxed, that means '93 tape masters, which seems to be what thedigitalbits is implying. But remember that this contradicts Darth First's information. So I'm waiting to see.

Why is anyone surprised? We've been saything this all along... George just wants your money and the ability to sue the people who transfer their laserdiscs over to dvd... because NOW he's released a PRODUCT of that version, and you are now stealing from him where you weren't before... This is easily all about money... He's not doing it because we asked for it, he's bowing to Queen AllMightyDollar.....

George is a whore, and he's whoring his children. What part of this is unclear? Accept the fact that we, as the public, are the 'Johns'...

Anyone want to bet whether or not these discs are single or double layer? Double-layer costs a tiny bit more... and since money is the object here... I bet we get overcompressed crap. Anything to make the 2004 editions look better... and for us to not watch the originals.

Crap in... Crap out...

Damn

Hey Neil! You were right all along! (Why didn't everyone listen to you?!?!?:!)

Before “Intentional Creative Decisions”!!! it was “…A certain point of view”???

So what? It's just "bonus material". A cheap add-on so that the 2004 version could be re-packaged and sold.

Neil

It sure seems that way - what a shame. For once I thought we'd get what we want. Still it WILL be far better than what we already have so all is not lost.

Non-Anamorphic DVD's are so crummy, companies stopped releasing like that in 2000. Companies like Fox, Paramount, and Disney's early releases were non-anamorphic, and you do see a huge difference in the resolution, even if you don't have a widescreen TV.

I am going to have a wait and see attitude on this one, but if it is true:

GEORGE, YOU CAN KISS MY ASS!

I never talk like this on the internet, and I never like when someone posts something personal about Lucas, but this is insulting to every fan who has wanted this. This is Lucas sticking the middle finger at every one of us saying, "You want great quality, you're going to have watch Hayden in ROTJ and Jabba in ANH."

Everyone stick with your bootlegs cause even if its slight better quality, is this what we fought for all these years, underwhelming quality? Lucas may be used to it with his PT fans accepting mediocre quality from his last 3 films, but there is no way I am buying this set, and I don't give a rats ass if it ruins the HD-DVD effect on him ever releasing that.

I can live with 2.0 Dolby Surround, but non-anamorphic, I'll keep my bootlegs.

It's good news any way you look at it. Until May 3rd we all thought LFL might never release the OUT. Now they are, it demonstrates they're interested in making money from it. All we have to do is demonstrate that they can and subsequent releases will be better.

Subsequent releases?!? are you kidding? haha! How many releases do we need to buy in the meantime - he's had FAR too much money from us over the years as it is. Bet he's laughing his bearded ass off at us right now....

If it really is non anamorphic then they have REALLY dropped the ball with this one. This is Star Wars for gawds sake - unbelievable.

That's were your wrong - According to Mr. Insano (Lucas), officially this is NOT star wars. The '04 releases are Star Wars, these old movies don't even officially exist beyond 'unfinished sketches' status.

War does not make one great.

Call me crazy, but I kinda thought the whole point of the petition was to demonstrate the market for the theatrical cuts.

There's no way I'm giving Lucas more money as a demonstration of my undying loyalty to Star Wars. Seriously, if this news turns out to be true, fuck him.

Excuse me while I go watch Return of the King.

What is absolutely CRAZY is the original effects shots of the trilogy on the Empire of Dreams DVD are anamorphic, so they have NO excuse!!!

This is pathetic on behalf of LFL! This clearly show Lucas has no intention of doing this the right way. He WANTS these editions to look bad, so that it makes his precious Super Special Editions look better in comparison. We're basically getting laserdisc transfers here so I wonder if we also get all the "shakies" present in the transfer. With "shakies" I'm referring to how the background elements move about a lot during most scenes. A good example is during the Obi/Vader fight in EP4 when the walls are literally coming to life. This has always bugged the hell out of me when looking at those laserdisc transfers. If this is indeed present and they are non-anamorphic as digitalbits reports, then I sure as hell won't buy this piece of crud. And how can they then slap the THX approval stamp on this!? I'm disgusted by how Lucas treats us. Finally when I thought he was coming around, he pulls this. To hell with him!
peace,

Well the shakies are part of the original experience so, personally, I want those left in but can see why they'd bug you, but yeah no anamorphic (again IFFFFF true!) is just unforgiveable being as they did it on the film clips in Empire of Dreams and other clips throughout that disc.... Surely this non anamorphic thing can't be true?!?

Your getting official versions of the OT isn't that good enough anymore?
Author
Time
Why don't you read exactly WHY we are not happy?

It's like - for example - Bowie or The Stones suddenly re-doing their back catalogue of albums and pretending originals never happened. Then 'giving in' after pressure from the public and releasing new versions AGAIN and saying the original will come with it... then finding out the original is mastered from a cassette...... Then having them smugly saying the new one is better quality and "I told you so".... Just not on and NOT at full bloody retail price!!! PLUS many of us already have the 2004 editions now anyway and we have to get these AGAIN with the original release. It's F-ing obscene marketing!

Would it be that hard to transfer them to another disc, and make them anamorphic without loosing quality? If so... I guess these "awesome new DVDs" will be nothing more than new source material to work from.

Thats what I was thinking.

" ...but back in 1993 they WERE state of the art - not so today."

If I remember correctly, the quote we heard about these transfers stated something about the technology at that time. Now we know why.

"And this is meant to be THX for firks sake!"

THX =/= anamorphic. Hell, the first Highlander DVD was THX certified. That sucker was crapola.

"Your getting official versions of the OT isn't that good enough anymore?"

Official? Yes. Acceptable? No. Pay attention or go back to sleep.

Not sure I can be bothered to buy them if they are non anamorphic.

guys, read the box art, it says WIDESCREEN at the top of all three of them. This story has got to be wrong. I don't read the bits that much so I won't trust them on this one. Remember, Lucas doesn't want these versions to out-sell his shiny SE. I think he had someone lie to the bits knowing that word would get out before the Sept. release. He's playing with our heads, just wait it out and see. Don't count your chickenss before they hatch.
