I wish I could say it was my own. But it will get our point across nicely (if we do it in a civil manor.)

There should be no notes saying "Lucas you suck, blah blah blah." We are no longer cutting Lucas down for ignoring the fans. We are now simply letting him know for sure which one of the two disks we are going to have to buy are the ones we really wanted.

I think the statements are just typical by Lucas. Didn't he say last spring critics never liked his movies and that he thought ep III would not be a success. Boo hoo. I don't see how anyone wouldn't want to see the original films after watching empire of dreams.

I think I've had enough of this silliness. I probably won't buy the new release. I didn't buy the 2004 ones either. I feel like I'm being manipulated and patronised.

The laserdiscs do suck somewhat, but they are not too bad with the decent player and projector I have.

Incidentally, there are parts of the SE I like - the new end song of ROTJ for one, but that's messed up by Mr Soon-to-be-living-the-rest-of-his-acting-life-in-mortal-embarrassment there.

First of all, I love this thread. Very amusing.

I guess the big thing for [I'm assuming] a lot of us is that we'll wait to hear some reviews from people we respect before we rush out like fools and buy up every copy. That's what I plan to do, knowing their penchant for "tweaking" things.

I love that idea of sending the SE discs back to Lucasfilm, too. Gotta admit, though, they're marketing geniuses. Seems like they want people to compare the two versions and hope to demonstrate how "superior" the SE versions are to the O-OT ones. It's like they're still pushing the movies to the newer generation that relies more on flash, and trying to shut up the older fans by giving us what we've wanted for many years. At any rate, I hope it all works out well.

Lucas certainly is a tough guy to figure out. I can understand the feeling of things not being good enough as I feel it sometimes when I'm drawing. But I know when enough is enough, whereas, until the day he dies, he won't be satisfied with any of the six Star Wars movies. People are so wary of anything he does now, especially when it comes to the Star Wars franchise, thinking "oh boy, what nonsense is he gonna add to it now?" The SEs could have been outstanding, but it's kinda sad that the video game franchise gets more respect than the movies they're ultimately based on.

I really think we all have to buy them even if there are problems with the transfer or whatever. It's the only way to demonstrate that releasing the OUT is financially profitable, which is the only thing that could lead to a better release in future. If they're left with a lot of unsold stock they'll never release it again.

I am probably going to end up getting them and just give the 2004 dvd's that were given as a gift to me away to my brother.

You might say quite a few, considering how many fans were angered by the digitized, expanded updates of episodes IV, V and VI. Lucas claims he's not re-releasing the originals to appease fans, but rather to bate them. "Now we'll find out whether they really wanted the original or whether they wanted the improved versions," he said. "It'll all come out in the end."

That son of a...

Okay...the SEs aside, has he no respect for movie history?

How illogical can he be? He releases these in a tiny period of time as bonus disks in the SEs and in unrestored quality and he calls that a fair contest? He is so going to totally lose damnit! He'll see.

We need to make an organized effort to have everyone who buys these disks send back the SE disks in the mail. A response like that needs to be huge. I am so going to do it.

Otherwise, we have to buy these editions if we support the preservation of the original trilogy. No matter what Loony Lucas says, we all already should have known that the popularity of this release is goign to figure into the availability of future releases. Even if the quality is simply a laserdisk transfer, we still need to get it. Have the pre-orders break DVD records.

After what I've heard over the past few days I'm contemplating not buying the movies. I'm going to wait it out tho. I wish that Lucas will do the right thing by the films and do a decent job with it. If this happens I'll go ahead and buy the DVDs again. I will send everything back except for the extras discs. I'm liking the look of Coov's new covers. They kick the ass of the LFL ones. Also, I'm sure better fan versions will come about because of this release. Those will be the ones I'm truly interested in since it seems Lucas is trying to punk the fans yet again.

This shit can't be by accident. Nobody fucks shit up like this unless they mean to.

It's a shame when fans who don't get paid for their work make better products than the actual creator.
There's good in the Original Trilogy, and it's worth fighting for.

She's not the only one to propose it. Several others, including myself, have proposed the same thing.

Why does it seem that just when he gets back on our good side, he wants to screw it all up again.

I agree with THX. We're going to have to swallow our pride. If we boycott this, he'll assume the OOT is unprofitable. Even if it's not perfect, vote with your dollars.

now to just organize that mass return...

I often wonder he lives in a bubble, cause I have never seen a director despise their own movies and the fans that loves those movies so much. Here is quote from MTV.com by Lucas about the Sept. 12th release:

Until then, he says he's curious to see what the reception will be for the upcoming limited-edition DVD release of the three original "Star Wars" films (see "Three Original 'Star Wars' Films (Finally) Coming To DVD — But Not For Long"). "It's just the original versions, as they were," Lucas said. "We didn't do anything to it at all. But we're not sure how many people want that."

I've never heard a more blatant confession of guilty conmanship.

He wants to see which will be more receptive, the 2004 release, or these? Of course the 2004 release will winout, for two reasons: 1.) The Neo-fans (i.e. the 12-16 yr old kids) will already have a copy of the "intended" versions and will thus deem the new release unecessary; thus the sales numbers will be much lower (as expected by Georgie boy), and; 2.) the visual quality of the OOT will be so poor that people who have bought the dvds will write into lucasfilm with rabid complaints, thus proving to Lucas (in his sick twisted world) that people in fact want superior versions (2004) instead of faulty ones (OOT), thus giving the greedy bastard another excuse to further bury the OOT in its already neck-deep grave, and continue altering the Star Wars saga by adding more "technologically superior" cartoon graphics, more musical numbers by digitized muppets, and even more random tweaks here and there to further meet the pre-1977 intended vision of george lucas before all this technology was availalbe, oh my.

Yes, judging by Lucas's comments above, if enough people do this that he gets to hear about it, it might make a difference.

Nah, I'm convinced the man is completely off his rocker. If this happened and it somehow succeeded he would just further delude himself and make up excuses for the unpredicted outcome.

I'm still definitely planning on sending the discs back to Luca$. Of course, in a civil manner. It's so pathetic and unbelievable that Star Wars has come to this. But something has to be done.
He can have the discs, I certainly don't want them.

Looks like there are lots of people on both sides of the buy / don't buy divide.

I urge everyone who buys the September discs to participate in the SE disc return. Those people who said that they might give the disc away to a relative or friend, please make sure that you notify LFL / Newscorp of your decision.
IF YOU DO BUY, TELL THEM WHY!

I urge everyone who doesn't buy the September discs to notify LFL / Newscorp of your decision.
IF YOU DON'T BUY, TELL THEM WHY!

The more actual customer feedback they receive, the less doubt there will be about the market for DVDs of the OOT.

It will also go some way to eliminating the "did they buy it for the SEs or the OOT?" question.

If you don't tell them, they won't know!!

Well, I didn't get a response from LFL yet, or Fox.

I'm sorry if I bugged you about this, SW! Sorry, everyone!

I guess I'm getting a bit caught up in this!

Hey, your passion is appreciated. The fight to save the OOT is far from over.

auraloffalwaffle, I think your "IF YOU DO BUY, TELL THEM WHY! IF YOU DON'T BUY, TELL THEM WHY!" system is a good one, and a good way to express the unity of both "sides" (we all want the OUT in the highest possible quality). I think most of the "boycotters" on this site have already told them why, and from what I can gather, most of the buyers will be doing so also, via the SE disc return.

In addition to emails, sending them written/printed, snail mail would help send an even stronger message I think.

Definitely. Emails are too easy to delete. Sending a snail mail message sends a strong, physical message.

Ooooo, I am SO going to send my SE discs back to George Lucas- maybe I'll put them in a giant box with tons of styrofoam peanuts. LOL

So, I guess we're not sending the discs back in one package? We're just each going to send them separately?

Author

Yes, I'd say separately is the best option. Oh, and if you use a lot of packing peanuts, don't use so many that they won't be able to find the disc.
