What is Free Comic Book Day??

Dude, don't tell me you haven't heard of it!

It's an industry wide thing that is in it's 5th year. The publishers send out free books to the shops to give away as promos to get people in the door. It's been quite successful so far. It's kind of what got me back in.

Anyone hit their local shops for Free Comic Book Day today? I took my kids. This is the 4th year in a row for us, and it's tradition now. We look forward to it every year. Of course I always poney up some extra to buy stuff I need and not be too greedy!

It's even on in Australia, fellaz...

I went with a friend 'cause it was my birthday too (and Buddha's as well)! So my friend bought me a TPB (Tales of the Demon), and my family gave me some money to buy some comics too. The free comic I got sucked, though (some JLA one based off a cartoon series by the look of it) - they must've ran out of the good ones.

My purchases that day included:

DC: The New Frontier Vol. 1 - AWESOME, by the way
Superman: Birthright
Batman: Venom
Wonder Woman #215 & 217
Legends of the Dark Knight #192

It was 65% off all back issues so all the others I was after were long gone! But these should keep me busy for a while...

Yeah. New Frontier is a great read. Volume 2 isn't as awesome, but it's still a good read.

Has anyone heard about Gaiman's latest project? He's doing some type of series about The Eternals. This is a series originally created by Jack Kirby in the 70's. Was just doing some reading on them...seems to be right up Gaiman's alley.

Nothing specific, but here's a link to a brief blurb on his home page:

I think kirby's greatest work is the new gods and it should be made into a movie.

Coincidentally enough, I just watched a video interview with Gaiman, and by the sounds of things, there's no way he'd do a remake of anything. Ever. So I think it's safe to assume it's a brand new thing. It's supposed to be seven stories, drawn by seven different artists (six of which he's never worked with before, but has always wanted to), based on the seven figures (Death, Destiny, Desire, etc.). I'm pretty sure they're all set in different time periods throughout the Sandman continuity. One of them, he said, was the earliest Sandman story chronologically (something to do with the creation of the universe). Anyway, looks like he took it very seriously returning to something that a) he loved so much and b) so many other people loved so much - he didn't want to make something that would tarnish his readers' memories of Sandman, and he said that he is proud of it, and he believes that it stands up to all of his previous works.

I tell you, if they keep doing this and other companies follow their lead, it will KILL the back-issue market more than it already is.

i have it, havent looked at it yet. also have the xmen one (40 years) havent gotten the spidey one cause ive seen stuff with a dvd rom version of that (the current one is cds) but the place i saw it at has the date pushed back so dont know if its coming out or not and when if it is.

Man, I really think the whole "Ralph Dibny is contemplating suicide" angle SUCKS. It is totally out of character. Lots of people lose their wives, that doesn't mean they can't go on. I really think whoever came up with that Idea needs to have their editorial position REVOKED.

Tell me what you think of it - I'm not sure if I'm gonna get it or not...

In other news, I've been chewing through comics like nothing else - I go out and buy a stack of TPBs, and then I go read them all at work! Had to get two more today just to keep up and even then I already read one!

Picked up Superman/Batman: Public Enemies and Batman: Thrillkiller. Public Enemies is great, extremely funny jokes, especially with regard to Power Girl, and a great inner voice interplayed between the two main characters. It does feel a little short though, which is only bad because it's so good.

Next, I think I wanna get Knightfall - Part One: Broken Bat.

The first issue was kind of slow. It will probably pick up as it goes along, but it could turn out horribly. It's a huge gamble.

Damn, I'm behind on everything these days. I really need to catch up on my comics.

So, how did Infinite Crisis turn out?

Superboy crashed Superboy-Prime into Alexander's tower, destroying it. Conner died, but all the earths coalesced into one "New Earth" with altered history. Wonder Woman is now a JLA founder again, Joe Chill was caught, Superman did things before debuting in Metropolis, among other things.

Prime and Luthor went to Metropolis where all the supervillains on Earth were trying to wreck the city, and the heroes showed up and beat the snot out of them. Prime got really angry and ran off to Oa because he think he can restart the universe by flying through the core of Oa at lightspeed (How exaclty this would restart the universe, I have NO idea)...

Anyway, the Green Lantern Corps comes together to stop him with a solid wall of ring energy and then a spider's web once Prime breaks that down, and this gives Superman and Kal-L enough time to catch up. So they fly him through Krypton's sun, stripping them all of their powers. Prime fatally wails on Kal-L and then Kal-El defeats Superboy-Prime. Kal-L dies in Power Girl's arms.

Later, Bats, Supes, and Wonder Woman all decide to take the year off. Superman doesn't really have a choice. Luthor tracks down Alexander and has the Joker kill him, then we see on Oa Superboy-Prime his trapped in a Green Lantern prison under a Red Sun and carves the Superman symbol into his chest. THen he swears he'll get out and starts drooling. The end.

speaking of comics fans, what are all your opinions on any or all of the upcoming comic films.

like:

X-3: the last stand

superman returns

I'm really looking forward to these 2 movies and I hope they totally don't suck.

Hopefully superman returns will return to the donner style and not be like that lester crap, I totally wish he had made 2 and 3.

and on X-3 i don't know how much involvement claremont had on it, so i'm keeping my finger's crossed.

David Hayter now known to many as the voice of solid snake wrote the screenplay for X-2 but not the last stand, and of course the director from the first 2 awesome x men films was not involved.

I was totally digging some of the stuff in the trailer though it brought me back to the days of reading not only the chris claremont version of x-men comics, but also my favorite jim Lee which the cartoon was based on, and I saw stuff in the trailer that reminded me of the dark phoenix mini series on that cartoon.

does anybody here appreciate the early days of the comics before there were comics books?

I love all the prince valiant stuff by foster, and The original "real" flash gordon drawn by Alex Raymond, and All of the e.c. comics stuff, the early superman and batman etc.

Even going back to some of the dime novels and the pulps, stylelistically I wonder how much an influence the writings of edgar rice burroughs had on the comics, because his stories are like comics without pictures. Especially his often imitated John carter series of books with which we probalbly would have never had flash gordon or star wars, or even the lensman books by e.e. smith.

I've been hearing stuff about a daredevil sequel, a second sin city movie, a wolverine movie among other things coming to the silver screen. Marvel also definetely said we will see ghost rider, the hulk 2, and hinted at a few suprises to come, probalbably they were talking about spider man 3. Of course the rival studios will not be far behind with hellboy 2, and batman continues.

A new Sin City movie I would definitely dig. A new Daredevil? Only if it's based page-for-page on the work of Frank Miller.

To tell you the truth, I liked X-Men, but mostly for Jackman's interpretation of Wolverine. A lot of the other characters didn't sit quite right with me. McKellen as Magneto, even though I don't believe he looked right, worked enough for me. Cyclops was pretty dead on, but did they have to make him a full-on jerk? Can't they let us decide whether we're gonna like him or not? Rogue was all wrong to my mind - where's that hot, bubbly Southern girl I know and love? Those were my main beefs, aside from Sabretooth being a disposable sidetrack (give us a real Wolverine/Sabretooth conflict sub-story).

X-2 bored me, it really did. I fell asleep in the middle of it the last time I saw it. It just had no depth. A lot of people probably disagree with me, but that's what I felt.

I still want X-3 and Superman Returns to be awesome, but I have my doubts about Returns. Why couldn't they have started again and instead try to evoke the spirit of the Donner iterations?
