What are you going to do with your SE discs? — Page 2

I think it would be best to somehow do it in person. If George was at any sort of event/convention, have everyone mail them to one person, who would present them in a box to George.

I am just glad we are getting the originals. I just hope they are descent transfers.

It's not my fault that 1000's of people signed a petition to get the OOT on DVD, and when some of those folks got what they wanted, they still act like kids.

And my complaint is accompanied by suggesting you send your SE DVD to charity instead of to LFL. Apparently that's not as fun as sending it to a mailroom where it'll sit for months before it gets opened and forgotten about in a few days.

That would be awesome! But mailing them back would be great too. It's not showing contempt at all; it's giving him accurate results for his little survey he's decided to create. Since he made a couple tactical errors setting it up, I think it'd be great to just make it absolutely clear that we didn't buy the pack for the SE's.

What a great statement that would make, though. I can see the headlines: "Hundreds of Star Wars fans flood George Lucas' mailbox with Special Edition DVD's". That note would be great to accompany it. "Thank you for the original versions of the Star Wars trilogy. It's a shame I was forced to buy the Special Editions as well. Since they are of no use to me, I am returning them to you.

What a statement! But you guys are right; if we do this, we can't go half-way. ALL 72,000 people or however many it was who signed the petiition should mail their SE discs back. Then, it would probably work!

No. But it is your fault that you have no sense of humor, joie de vivre, or appreciation of irony, and you get your kicks by registering on long-established forums and pooping all over other people's threads and telling them how to dispose of their private property. I've got a few ideas on where you can put your SE discs, but out of respect for the fairer sex whom I know to be present, I shall refrain from posting detailed instructions.

I'd rather buy a second set, donate the OT discs from that set and send back two sets of the SSE. I agree with you that there is a lot of bitterness and juvenile posting about these movies and I've posted in other threads supporting LFL on the new release. However, packaging the discs with the SSE discs is ridiculous. This is not intended as an act of spite, or to get a chuckle. George Lucas has said he wants to know if people really want the OOT or the SSE. This is a simple and effective way to answer his question.

I have plenty of "joie de vivre"..... but it doesn't come from complaining about not have a movie on DVD. And if donating the SE discs to a children's charity makes get cranky, then what to do with your DVD is the least of your problems.

Sorry I pooped on your fanboy jollies. It's obvious that even when you finally get your OOT on DVD.... you still feel the need to be bitter.

This is sounding great! We should get this whole thing organized between now and summer.
And make sure to render them unusable before sending them in, or they'd just get resold probably. A scratch line across the disc will do the trick, as will a sharpie. I'm sure there are better methods, like cutting them halfway down with scissors.

And stop registering here for the sole purpose of raining on our parade. People who just joined after the announcement of the OOT release with ten or less posts usually do. Talk about complaining! Sheesh!

You have a decent idea about donating to charity, but I'd tend to agree more with what THX said. I'd rather buy two sets and donate one of the original movies to children.

Sorry to double post, but I like Hal's post. There have been so many new users since the historic May 3rd announcement, and most of them are only here to bitch at us about it for some reason.

So give GL, a guy most folks in here dislike.... more money. The hypocracy is amazing.

Complain that GL sucks too much money out of the fans.... "he makes us buy....etc" but then turn around and give him twice as much money all so that you can mail your old set to him... and that way, the next time fans start a petition to give to LFL, they'll remember when those same "fans" from the biggest petition of all, got what they wanted and then turned around acted like babies.

Smooth move.

I not gonna mail them, I have the 2004 set, and I am going be buying at least two sets of the original films, so I will 2 2004 sets spare, Im gonna give them away...

I just have a feeling that doing this could backfire. and any hopes of you guys getting/wanting a OOT release on another format in the distant future ever agian could disapear how ever much the demand would be, if fans are gonna react to this unlikely release by mailing their DVDs back to them and acting seemingly not grateful.and giving what Lucasfilm may see as a middle finger to Lucas, they may not be so interested in listening to the fans demands next time.

I understand there's a discussion about the immenent release of the theatrical version of Star Trek the Motion Picture on the Trek boards. Why don't you go bother them?

I always respect your opinion Mr Bungle, and may have to agree with ya on this one. I guess if we go out guns a blazin sending our disks back, we can kiss the O-OT on HD-DVD goodbye. I probably don't think we have that much power if we do send our disks back anyways, but I have to say, I may just buy the release and try to forget about George Lucas anymore, and just enjoy the O-OT.

I just don't know what it is anymore in that Lucas quotes and his attitude towards the fans just brings the worst out in me. I just wish he would just one time give us our due as loyal fans of the OT. Yeah, maybe we should reconsider this stance we are taking guys.

please guys don't start bashing each other! what i always liked about this forum is that the bashing is relatively mild here (and for an internet forum it's rare!) so let's not go there.
i really like the idea of sending back just to see the headlines in the newspapers, but i can see how it seems like a waste and that better things could be done with it. also, it is true that it could make GL hate the original trilogy even more...

BUT releasing it only as a bonus is a sign of disrespect. they might as well give it its own release, since they are going through the effort of transfering it to disc and of packaging it anyway. this seems like an arrogant gesture, like the people at Lucasfilm are only throwing a bone at us to keep us in check. that is why sending the useless dvds back would show him. still, it's better than nothing at all...

What we could do is play it cagey. Wait and see how this pans out. Hopefully we are numerous enough to make Lucas take notice and if we are and his attitude changes, then fine. If we are numerous and he continues to bash or be dismissive, then we can send them back. If it turns out they don't sell well, then we'll deal with that as it comes. No point making waves unless Lucas decides to make the water choppy himself, right?

Word of advice -

If you are sending the disks back, don't be rude about it. Sure, Lucas is a dick, but we don't have to be one either. For those who want to, when you buy the disks, take the SE and send them back with an appropriate note that simply states that

a) The 1977, 1980, and 1983 versions were the only ones you truely wanted
b) You have no use for the revised versions
and/or
c) You already have this version since you bought the 2004 box set and have no need for yet another copy of the same movie

If we are CIVIL about this, our point will be made subtly without a lot of "wah wah wah, the fans are never happy" talk people are spreding. We are going to buy his movies. It is up to us to let him know which version we prefer since both are in the package. Because, how else is he truely going to know?

or you can mail them back to LFL... that little chuckle you get when you mail the box will really be worth it in the long run. It is kinda a waste to give them back to George when you could give them to charity. Maybe I will take a photo of myself giving the discs to a charity store and send that to George. Doesn't have quite the same inpact though, plus I don't really want to inflict that SE shit on some poor kid.

Problem solved.

As for this plan backfiring, I don't think that will happen if we word the letter right. I'm gonna say something along the lines of 'I am returning thsi to help you obtain accurate data as to which versions the fans want, I hope this is useful to you. Thank you for giving me the original movies' etc. It will be polite but it will get the point across.

As for this not being an accurate way to measure which is preferred because it will have both, remember anyone who wanted the 2004 versions would have bought the 3 disc set. Anyone who buys the new set will do so for the original films or both versions.

First of all, I went out of my way to admit that your idea had some merit to it. Second of all, in case you hadn't noticed, our "plan" is not to boycott Lucas. Whether his attitude is there or not, he is technically giving us what we want, and we want the originals to be popular, so, yeah, we will be shelling our money out. I'm not sure how buying these DVDs is going to prove that we're acting like babies. Aren't we doing exactly what he wants us to do? Can you think of a better way that we can help George out with his little science experiment over which version is preferred?

And third, and most importantly, you're a dick! You call us hypocritical, yet you're the one here consistently whining, which is what you're complaining that we're doing. Why the hell are you here in the first place? What are you trying to prove? I'd love to know. And if you choose to respond, you'd better keep a civil tongue, you prat. If you've actually come with some purpose and a legitimate opinion, then I will be forced to respect it. But if you're just here to whine and complain, like you seem to think is all we do, then allow me to show you the door!

Heh, apparently so.

I'm torn about my discs. Both sides have pretty good reasons for their arguments. It would be nice to get to show them what we want by sending them back (politely, of course), but I can see how we might end up pissing them off and have it be counter-productive.
