ITS HAPPENED-- OOT AVAILABLE FROM LUCASFILM — Page 5

"In other words you like everyone else who has not replied to me don't want anything fixed."

Now you are putting words into the mouths of those not speaking, as well as mine. There are many levels and types of "fixes". You apparently believe that a "fix" by LFL would automatically be a good thing. I, on the other hand, have come to dislike Lucas' examples of what he considers to be a "fix".

"Maybe i'm the only one that wants a "truely" enhanced version, but then again I don't whine alot so maybe that's the problem ;-)"

Correction. You apparently believe that a "fix" implies an "enhancement". The problem here is, you believe this "perfect" version that you apparently have in mind is what Lucas will end up giving you, fixes and all. I'd rather he leave it alone, especially since I am in a position to make extraordinary improvements to video.

The reason you aren't "whining" is because you think you are going to get what you want. I can only imagine how you'll react should his "fixes" not be acceptable to you. Time will tell.

"The only things I don't like are complete scenes replaced by cg rather than cg enhancements. Or new cantina aliens verses the old ones. The falcon escaping Mos Eisely through the roof instead of "out the back" like in the original. These are the things that urk me. But matte lines should be removed, double exposed elements should be fixed to look opaque, garbage mattes should be removed, etc..."

Correction: You are whining.

All I know is that the statement said these will be just what would have been seen in theatres in '77, '80, and '83. That should mean no "enhancements," "fixes," or any other synonym you want to use. If you want those, they've already been done. I just want them to do what they say they're going to do. Then I'll be happy. And they said no changes, so I expect no changes. Theatrical cuts=theatrical cuts.

Yeah, the changes should be reserved for the extra special super duper whatever editions only. (Which I like). I only want the originals for preservation, that's all, with all of the problems they had in tact.

Heh, well, at least we agree on something, marioxb! Just not the archival purposes only and liking the special editions better than the originals. ^_~

Grrr. Ha, ha, whatever. Um, this is what I really said:

Yeah, I just see Star Wars as one 6 part movie now, just like Lord of the Rings is one three part movie.

The last five words were just writtin in invisible ink, um invisible type or something.

No, you were correct...the Lord of the Rings DOES have six parts. There are six books. two per novel. The story is broken up into six distinct books. Really, all the divisions are sort of superficial, as Tolkien always intended for it to be released as one part. the three novel division was sorta arbitrary, although the splitting of the story into 6 different books was always there.

I know I'm splitting hairs unbelievably, since there weren't SIX MOVIES of the Lord of the Rings, but I'm just trying to give you an out

Oh, yeah, you're right! Each tome was divided into two parts! You got me there, Bizzle! I need to read those again.

Not strictly correct. The Lord of the Rings is a novel divided into three parts, each part being composed of two books. The division into six books was Tolkien's, although he did hope to see it published in a single volume. When Allen & Unwin suggested the work be divided into three parts, Tolkien paired up the books with uncharacteristically few complaints (see letter 136).

If you want, you can refer to each book as a part, in the generic sense of the word, but that is neither in accord with Tolkien's private thoughts or his published words.

Well, I am a bit annoyed at him for altering The Hobbit after Lord of the Rings came out.

Oh gosh, am I a total hypocrite if I tell you to just get the Annotated Hobbit and read it whichever way you want? I kind of feel like it, but it's the textual equivalent of a branching DVD, which I've always found acceptable, so there you go.

Well, Scruffy, while I'm still annoyed that it was changed at all (just like the SEs), I was unaware that the original version still existed at all. So there you go. Thanks.

Happy to be of service. The Annotated Hobbit is a fantastic book, and if you like TH, I can't recommend it highly enough. Even if you don't, it's a good way to get into a creative genius's head, and see how his ideas have been interpreted around the world.

Huzzah!
I actually got ocpmovies' "Classic Editions" before I read this comment, so I hope I will not be sued...
Although (there goes my forum account) I do beleive that George had the right to alter his works. I mean, they are his works. I was a bit peeved, but, hey! That is where Bittorrent comes in. I actually liked the original trilogy (my PM box is going to be full of flames) and thought AotC was pretty good. Perhaps not as fitting as the originals, but, whatever! Seing that George wants to release (or his lawyers) the OOT just makes me more pleased.
Way to go, G-Dog! You have become more powerful than I coould possibly imagine!
(Side note, I realize that this post was delerious and polarized, as I first saw Star Wars as the 1997 versions. So, OK, I agree that I have no right to speak. But that is what the internet is for, eh? People who shouldn't say anything at all talking to people that don't care what they have to say!)

Turnip: I doubt you'll get too many flames. I don't think that Lucas should have modified his works, but he wanted to, so thats fine. I personally wouldn't care if he digitally made every character a gungan, and replaced Luke with Jar-Jar. As long as the originals are available too. I think that you'll find this is a common view here. No matter, we are all happy that the originals are coming to DVD as a result, and may finally limit some of the SE vs. O-OT debate.

First thing is i'm not assuming any fix or an enhancement by LFL would be a good thing -- I've not implied that anywhere in my statement. I gave an example of the fixes and enhancements I was talking about that I would like to see. Appearently people want the flawed version you included -- which is fine for you.

Secondly again you're trying to imply something I never said. By "Truely enhanced" I meant digital cleanup of the elements, and making sure it looks it's best, grain removal, color enhancement and such. And then appropriate garbagemattes and mattelines "fixed" So maybe i'm using the two words interchangably, that doesn't detract from what I want.

Where do you get the idea that I believe LFL will give my my "perfect" version? Did I say that? Of course I did not so you're implying yet again.

The reason i'm not 'whining' is because I believe i'll get what I want, where did I say that? Did I say that? Again no. the whining I was referring to is fans writing in letters complaining for the originals -- I did however sign the petition like everyone else here, so I did a certain amount. But really I haven't 'whined' to LFL about the "perfect" version I want.

As far as saying I am whining, I simply stated my opinion in my last message. In fact I haven't posted to the forums all that much at least not in comparison to most people here.

It seems you were trying to put words into my mouth.

Simply stated I want a perfect version of the original "vision" -- And I know I won't get that for a fact.

I will probably see if I can make my perfect version myself based off the dvd's assuming I can rip them.

Well said and agreed. All I ever wanted was for both versions to be out. People will be able to watch both and see which ones they prefer.

My guess is that it'll only be in widescreen. The pan & scan lovers probably don't care anyway.

They care - they only want a third of what they originally saw in the theaters in '77.

I too believe there will be both a widescreen and fullscreen release. I mean, fullscreen is how many of us, who aren't old enough to have seen them theatrically, saw the films the first time. That nostalgia may remain.
Author

Eh, I'm ready to discontinue that nostalgia. That was one of the reasons I was excited about the '04 releases even after I found out about all the horrible additions. Besides the excitement of having digital clarity in the video, I was finally intelligent enough to know to buy it in widescreen, seeing 40% more of Star Wars than I ever had before!
