Lucas talks about the Sept 12th Release of the O-OT

I edited this interview just to what Lucas says about the O-OT, and it is amazing how much he disrespects the fans. I often wonder he lives in a bubble, cause I have never seen a director despise their own movies and the fans that loves those movies so much. Here is quote from MTV.com by Lucas about the Sept. 12th release:

05.11.2006 6:00 AM EDT

Until then, he says he’s curious to see what the reception will be for the upcoming limited-edition DVD release of the three original “Star Wars” films (see “Three Original ‘Star Wars’ Films (Finally) Coming To DVD — But Not For Long”). “It’s just the original versions, as they were,” Lucas said. “We didn’t do anything to it at all. But we’re not sure how many people want that.”

You might say quite a few, considering how many fans were angered by the digitized, expanded updates of episodes IV, V and VI. Lucas claims he’s not re-releasing the originals to appease fans, but rather to bate them. “Now we’ll find out whether they really wanted the original or whether they wanted the improved versions,” he said. “It’ll all come out in the end.”

See everything we’ve got on “Star Wars,”“The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi.”

Wouldn't that be just a little hard to tell when you're selling both in one package? Jeez

Releasing the OOT and SEs simultaneously in two separate packages would've provided the information he seeks.

That didn't happen specifically because the OOT would've at least gone head-to-head with the SEs in terms of sales, and his fragile ego couldn't handle that.

I'm starting to feel sorry for him. He's completely clueless. He's like Michael Jackson without the paedophilia.

I propose a new petition that we can all sign. It says this:

****************

Dear George Lucas:

The Star Wars Fan giveth, and the Star Wars Fan taketh away.

Signed,

Maybe he can look around at everything that our money built for him between 1977 and 1997 when Star Wars went to hell, and realize that he owes us all a debt of gratitude and a bit of respect.

I hate being right, but that's exactly what I knew he was getting at, as I've said around here a few times. I still wouldn't be surprised if he made sure things like garbage mattes stood out as much as humanly possible just to give him the "edge." An edge that's not at possible to achieve since, as everyone else has pointed out, he's releasing both versions in the same package. Whatsamatta, Georgie? You scared? Well, you should be!

Like has been mentioned before he's trying to get rid of old stock SE trilogy disks before the end of the year.

Ya know what George, release them on their own, for an UN-limited time, then we will see. Until then, don't even say anything.

That's so stupid of him. As if releasing the special editions on DVD twice in a row by themselves and advertising them heavily (one of them with a bonus disc) and then releasing the OOT on the 2nd disc as "Bonus Material", NOT restored, individually packaged (along with the 2004 DVD's, which most people own) and available for only four months is a measure of "whether they really wanted the original".

Yeah, that's fair. Personally, I think with comments like "We didn't do anything to it at all. But we're not sure how many people want that." Lucas can't possibly be that STUPID. I just think he wants us to prove him wrong and buy LOTS of discs so that he can get LOTS of $$$$ from this like he has from everything else. Just a clever marketing tactic.

"Releasing the OOT and SEs simultaneously in two separate packages would've provided the information he seeks."

He doesn't have the nads to do this. Hell, if the OOT did outsell the SE's, he'd probably say something about the SE market being saturated (though he'd probably be right to an extent - this being the third release in almost as many years.)

[EDIT] You know, people keep talking about thanking Lucas, but considering his continued contempt for the OOT, even after the announced release, I can't help but wonder what, if any, involvement he really has in all this - beyond giving his consent.

I totally agree. This release will most definitely not sell as well as the previous two DVD releases, because to the layman who doesn't know the difference, why buy the same movies three times within the span of two years? That, of course, will provide him with the "proof" that the original doesn't sell as well as the special edition.

I have a feeling that, as a kid, George would only play a game with the other kids if he was the one who got to make up the rules.

I've wondered that same thing since the announcement. He said the originals didn't exist anymore, he lied about all the things he said and did in the 70s (no matter how much proof there was to the contrary), he kept altering the movies, and he claimed he'd never release the unaltered versions. Now it's being done after all and he's not the one that made the announcement. Also, he's still digging his heels in, even now. Seems like someone at Fox made an executive decision to ignore his ridiculousness and give thousands of fans what they've wanted all along.

reminds me an interview of the guys who made the Rogue Squadron games for gamecube, they were asked the question (OOT or SE?) and they were all pro-OOT, i believe it's the same at LFL (except for you know who...)

Why that slimy, no-good, double-crossing swindler.

It just really surprises me that Lucas keeps showing more and more contempt for the fans.Sure, he'll go out do his little song and dance at the next Celebration event, but he just kepp showing contempt for the fans who really loved the original versions.
There's good in the Original Trilogy, and it's worth fighting for.

You're right.
His detachment from this decision is strange. With a little luck, he'll be just as uninvolved in this as it appears he'd like to be. No spiteful, crappy transfers just to prove a point.

Even if it was on even terms this time around, most of us were dumb enough to buy the 2004 versions when they came out (most of us not knowing that the OT was even more fucked up), adding to the probably incredible sales of the DVD. So if it was going to be a fair test, we'd probably have to use a time machine and such...

Let's look at that quote again.

If you read what Lucas actually said, without the interpretation put on it by the "journalist", I think it's pretty encouraging. It suggests to me that he will be using sales of the new sets to determine popularity of the OOT vs. the SSE, despite packaging them together. This implies that if the set is very successful, LFL will continue to release the OT in future editions/formats, which I think we all hope for.

To help show him that the OOT is the one that we wanted, we need to send back the SE disk in the package that we are buying.

I plan on attatching a little note saying along the lines of:

"Thanks for the 1977, 1980, and 1983 versions of the Star Wars trilogy. I'm disapointed that I had to buy the 2004 release disks as well, and since they hold no value to me and I don't want them, I'm giving them back. Here you go.

Signed,

Me"

Then Lucas will know.

Yes, judging by Lucas's comments above, if enough people do this that he gets to hear about it, it might make a difference.

I've actually noticed that myself, too, but I guess I was too frenzied to let it bother me. That, or I've just been letting myself assume that that was paraphrasing for a quote that was cut out. At least, that's what I hope.

I do agree, and that is why we have to step up and all buy this set no matter how crummy it is. Lucas = $$$$$$$, and if this set makes a boatload of money, there is no way Lucas won't release this for the HD-DVD sometime in the future. So even though I still feel he is out of touch and arrogant, he seems like he is going to let the market do the talking.
