What I call the crown jewel of my DVD collection is the Superman 2 extended that i got from My spleen .I know that there is going to be a 14 DISC COLLECTION OF THE sUPERMAN FILMS in November but this is just flawless and i know that Warner Brothers isnt going to have ALL the deletes that are included here .... It is a perfect bookend to the extended Supes the movie .

I was just curious as to what piece of video is your crown jewel..

I am not sure about the rarest one in my collection, but if I had it, it would be this one:
DEAD MAN WALKING in German. When I found this one first on ebay starting with 60 Euro I thought they were trying to secretly sell drugs... but no, all legal expensive.

Nothing about fanediting is easy.

To the original poster: A DVD you've downloaded doesn't make it rare, regardless of how nice it looks.

On topic: My rarest DVDs are probably the three Lord of The Rings giftsets, A Better Tomorrow Trilogy limited edition set or my Die Hard Trilogy Five Star Region 1 set.

Edit: Actually my rarest DVD is the out of print, Region 2 original pressing of True Lies. The original release used the uncut master by mistake, this was quickly recalled once the error had been realised, and was replaced with the UK cut version. I managed to pick up the uncut version from eBay for about £6.00.

I'm guessing the rarest DVD I have is a german region 2 Back to the Future set that has been released before the US Back to the Future DVD collection.
It has less special features than the US version unfortunatley.

And probably also that worthless (but now rare) Wal-Mart "The Story of Star Wars" DVD you get after buying Episode III...

we're talking rarity right? Because I don't like those two DVDs I mentioned and I find my three LOTR movies (the EEs) alot cooler looking
and awesomly designed.

Rarest retail DVD I own? Probably the out-of-print Bride of Re-Animator special edition. There might be something rarer. Rarest movie in my collection? Well, if I mention it, people will bug me for it and I can't trade it out

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

Holy shit. I own the UK BFI release, which is the next best version to the Criterion. It's a pretty shite movie, but I'm 95% certain that the Criterion release is the rarest DVD in the world.

Fancy selling it?

My rarest videos have got to be the 1979 release of The Making of Star Wars from Magnetic Video and then the 1982 Twentieth Century Fox Video "rental only" release of Star Wars. Both are in excellent condition.

I bought the "Making of" video a few years ago, but the Star Wars video was the very first VHS tape I ever bought. I got it while working in one of the first video rental departments of a Licorice Pizza record store back in 1983. The store was supposed to return the rental only videos to Twentieth Century Fox after a period of time, but the manager held one back and sold it to me for $90. I found out later that the manager had pocketed the money because the store had already paid Fox for the "loss" of the tape.

It certainly is shite ("mangia !") but the completest in me was grateful I got it early ! I think it's true market value is probably only $200ish - but I wouldn't part with it for a release of the OT from Lucasfilm themselves !

I have a Bonzo Dog concert film which no one else has, which I wasn't allowed to copy. I intend to copy it for my second release of Talking Pictures. The bootleg of Return of the Ewok and the Fred Calvert WIP of Princess and the Cobbler were incredibly rare, but you saw what I did with those. =) Oh, I have many rare things, can't think right now.

As for DVD, I have old editions of some Charlie Chaplin films released in 2000 on DVD (based on the terrific 1992-1993 laserdiscs). They were taken out of print in favor of "special editions" which used poor quality PAL-to-NTSC conversions. I also had a rare 4-disc Beatles set (including Help! and Magical Mystery Tour), but I opted to sell it for $150 and burn myself some copies. There's also the matter of a lot of Disney stuff that they took out of print.

On VHS, my prize for a while was the original SP tape for UHF. Now the DVD is out, it's worthless. For a while, I had an SP tape of the MST3K episode Gorgo (which aired only once), but it was stolen from my collection.

My 2-disk limited edition of Bad Taste is supposed to be pretty rare. I also never see the Criterion edition of In the Mood For Love being sold in stores.

My limited edition Anchor Bay VHS tapes of Evil Dead and Army of Darkness are pretty cool, and they are individually numbered out of 30 000 i think. The AOD tape was the first ever release of the Directors Cut, which was pretty special at the time. My two-tape Terminator 2 special edition VHS set was awesome as well, a big box set containing the VHS of the extended version and a second tape with trailers and stuff. My Dawn of the Dead 2-tape Directors Cut was the prize of my VHS collection when i bought it. I also had Document of the Dead and Hearts of Darkness, two very rare documentaries.

And yeah, Salo is like the rarest video of all time. I never understood the fasination with it--its a very poor film to be honest.

The rarest video(s) that I have is all but, one episode of G4's Portal on VHS. Basically, before the G4 tech tv merger they had this great show of Portal. Comcast cancelled the show and, chances are so slim of it coming on DVD/re-airing it's practically impossible. The only way that it would see another airing/ it getting on DVD is if some fan won the lotto and, bought the rights. The number of people that have (all or most) the episodes on tape are probably less then 10. Also, as far as, I am aware there is no place to download any full episode... So, yeah, it's pretty rare... I also, have some more rare G4 stuff but, the Portal stuff is my crown jewel. Plus, the current CEO/staff of G4 don't want to hear any "complaints" on anything so, a petition wouldn't work. Infact it's a rule on thier forums now that if you post a thread "complaining(a.k.a. we don't like your post/your suggesting something)" they delete it.

Pah... what's "rare"? I suppose to e.g. a North American customer with a locked drive a non-R1 DVD that's unreleased in USA and, say, was only released in one country would be rare (Polanski's "Pirates", the US edit of "Fearless Vampire Hunters", the 2-disc version of "Dominion", for instance...). "Rare" as in the so-called "limited editions" (the 2-disc release of "Manhunter" or "Hellboy" with a film cell)? "Rare" workprints, officially unreleased films, practice shorts of future directors (Paul Thomas Anderson, Sam Raimi, Trey Parker, to name a few whose homemade shorts have been leaked) etc.? "Rare" due to their legal problems ("Ricky 6")? "Rare" as in "even the director won't acknowledge their existence" ("Manson Family Massacre" )? "Rare" because only the person responsible for their existence was interested in somehow releasing them, and that in a tiny quantity (a certain awkward individual who plagues Sylvester Stallone with a certain plotless film of his comes to mind... )?

I guess the most prized piece of my somewhat limited collection is my set of all 180-some MST3K episodes. Since most of these will never see an official DVD release, I value these tremendously, even though you can probably still find them online if you know where to look.

Another title I value highly is a tape of old P.O.D., Project 86, and Blindside shows from 1999/2000. Sadly, I have yet to transfer these to DVD along with my MXPX "It Came From Bremerton!" tape. You Star Wars people are killing my hopes and dreams.

[X0 Project]
[Backstroke of the West DVD]
[ROTS Theatrical DVD]

The rarest DVD that I own is the "Terminator 2 Ultimate Edition" (1-disc, complete with metal outer case). I was able to score it for $5.00 Canadian (and still sealed) at a Loblaws grocery store. It's got all the extras from the laserdisc box set on it. It's awesome. I also have the original 2-disc version of "A Beautiful Mind", and the 2-disc "Saving Private Ryan: 60th Anniversary Commemorative Edition", both of which went OOP quite a while ago.

Mine would be the MST3K: The Movie actual retail DVD. I bought this one years and years ago in a Suncoast on the sale rack for $10! Also, perhaps my Cowboy Bebop: Perfect Sessions box set. The DVD's themselves aren't rare, but they only made a few thousand boxes.

Looking through my DVDs, I think the rarest I have are the out-of-print Bride of Re-animator and the Puppet Master boxset. Of my fiancee's DVDs, she has all of the Disney Platinum Editions, so probably the first couple of those.
