PAL and SECAM are television standards and as such, DVDs created for those regions need to be converted for playback in other regions. That's why this one DVD player I saw at HKFlix.com is so cool. It's region free and can convert the PAL/SECAM colour schemes to NTSC, plus it has the X/Y scaling so you can fit the PAL aspect ratio to North American televisions (PAL's AR is 5:3, or 1.66:1). You can also use it to compensate for overscan on your TV. Unfortunately, @ ~ $270 US, it's a little out of my starving student budgetary constraints, or I'd snap it up.

$900?!?!? Dear God. My two DVD players combined didn't cost that much. Heck, that amount of money would cover my two DVD players, my surround sound system, and both of my VCRs with a little padding for some DVDs. Holy hell.

No I don't believe in expensive systems. I have enough to make things work and that's all I've ever found I need. Heck I still own the factory stereo in my truck (have to replace it though as, after six years, it's now fried).

i know supply and demand but you cant exactly enforce it in one country unless that country cuts all ties.
Author
Time
Yeah, but if one country doesn't produce their own product and they are forced to import it from outside their borders (likely outside their continent), then there is higher demand than say in the U.S. or Japan. Manufacturers can increase prices if they so desire and resellers within the importing country can jack the prices up to stratospheric levels because they know their customers have no other place from which to purchase these products. Yes, he could have bought off the internet, but motti told us that there are pretty big taxes and stuff levied on him when he orders from websites outside his country. Either way, he's screwed.

You obviously didn't read my whole post... Motti said that Denmark puts additional taxes on stuff purchased from the internet that is imported into his country. Either way, he's fubared.

That's true of all digital media in Europe. I nearly died when my uncle told me how much CDs cost in the UK, much less DVDs.

Nope - motti is only "screwed", it's ME who's really "fubared".

E.g.:

year 2000
-------------
salaries of my parents: $200/$250 per month (net icome, excluding tax/health insurance already paid)
average LucasArts game's price: $50

...and now economics are worse (unemployement, etc.) thanks to "government of buddies"...
(And that's why I'm still using a computer that remembers what was to "party like it's 1999".)

But to make things funnier, Polish publishers try to cut average game cost to 50% by buying license for exclusively Polish edition. (The producer sells it at lower cost, coz it can't be "sold back" in other countries due to different language.)

So the next Jedi Outcast may feature Billy Dee Williams' or Mark Hamill's voice, but it will be replaced by Polish dubbing. Also don't count on getting bonus figure in the Jedi Academy box, too.
Think of the words that generate the SW look&feel ("blaster", "hyperspace", "droid", "lightsaber"...) that have to be translated...

LucasArts website says "sorry, but registration and ordering is valid for US and Canada residents only."

And who is fu..ed beyond reckognition here?

Indeed. I wouldn't complain about getting French language tracks on my DVDs before; now, knowing what RRS has to put up with, I wouldn't even DREAM of complaining.

I don't have anything against my language (as you have seen I try to subtly promote Poland ), but some stuff is best served in its original form. If it's just "a game" it's not that bad. If the game's text is close to "book quality" (some RPGs) or the voices are of Blizzard quality (e.g. WarcraftIII) things get worse. But when they change something you're bananas about (like SW) it's something I can't accept...

Ever since computers (and games ) forced me to learn English few years ago I prefer books/games/movies in their original form - this way I can improve my command of this language. And now, when English schools are nearly everywhere, it shouldn't pose a such language "barrier" for most people.
Bustards - they should be releasing those games in Polish back in the times when I couldn't understand what those characters are trying to tell me in King's Quest III...

If it was a combo (English + optional Polish subtitles/media) it would be the best choice. Almost like in the movies (or DVD). But license cost a lot more if it includes original English content - that's why I haven't seen many releases like that.

These trends go on beyond the PC game genre. Polish SW fans had no choice but to force the publisher to distribute subtitled version of TPM (and AOTC too) - otherwise only PL dubbed one would be available. "Hey, TPM it's a kid's movie - why would we force those poor brats to read text to follow the plot?"

DVD makes multinational versions possible (and easy&cheap to compile), but unfortunatelly not all forms of entertainment can benefit from that... especially if it's not financially feasible....

If only getting original stuff wasn't so expensive...

ok to clear thjings up regarding DK:

dvd's cost around 30-50$, depending on which one it is and so forth.

dvd players (!!) cost from the 150$ mark tosomething close to 2500$, depending on which one it is again. good dvd players start around 500-600$.

if your order anything off the internet, customs will impound your stuff until you pay taxes on those items you purchased.

if you bring something into the country and it is declared/detected you have to pay taxes on those items you purchased.

everything costs a lot in DK, you put 247%on top of the factory price for a car. say a car costs 100,000 in the factory it it will cost 347,000 when you buy it.
