Season 1 of Angel is a little too episodic for my taste (as is the last season), and may prove problematic for a movie (what to focus on?). But Doyle definitely plays too important a role in the beginning of Angel to kill off so quickly.

For an Angel movie of Season 1, it's similar to Buffy season 1. Most of it is stand alone episodes. I would try to make the emphasis on Angel Investigations just starting out and coming together to form Team Angel. Doyle would be something of the heart and soul of the team and would get killed halfway through. Angel and Cordelia are left in mourning, the company in a state of void, and the challenge for them would be to build up from there. Introduce Wesley as a sort of replacement and then have Gunn as a sort of friend who comes to help the guys. Of course, play up Wolfram & Hart more and have them the main nemesis.

As far as Season Five goes, the first half of the season is episodic, but after that, it comes together to tell one of the best arcs of either series, so it may not be too hard.
