The battle will still continue. VHS was acceptable to people just over ten years ago--in over ten years from now DVD will no longer be around, likely, and cinephiles will either be full-fledged into HD or some kind of next-gen post-HD format. DVD is already "obsolete", despite its popularity--its nothing near "archive quality", although to someone who would have been content with VHS or Laserdisk it is adequete.

Also, regarding degredation--have you heard of disk rot?

Nothing has changed. We've been satisfied--for now. But in a few years time when more and more of us are using HD video as the preferred viewing format and Star Wars is not available on it the need will arise to pressure Lucasfilm to releasing it.

The battles quieted down but its not over at all.
