I know all of you don't want to get your hopes up, but I have to say I really believe we did it. So I jumped on here and wanted to say I think everyone who signed the petition and also worked so hard to preserve all that we know and love have finally convinced Lucas to release the movies as we remember them. So I say congratulations and especially thank you to everyone here.

Assuming it is what they say it is then I also think it is time that we let bygones be bygones as they say. Lucas has finally given us what we wanted and most of us said stuff like, I won’t forgive him until he releases the originals on DVD. Well here they are, and I think one day they will also be on HD-DVD as well, something we never thought we would be able to say. He has finally returned to the good side after all.

So congrats to all of you.

I used to believe but then I completely lost hope and didn't believe petitions worked, but OT.com prooved me wrong. YAHOOOOO. I'm going to go to all the old star wars forums I used to visit and see what they think about this. I told everybody back in the day that lucas would eventually cave to fan pressure, but they didn't believe me. Now what? ha ha ha ha

I hate to point it out, but this set is timed to coincide with the release of a new line of toys and the Lego Star Wars 2 video game. They have product to sell, so they bang out a shoddy release with no supplemental features and (possibly) sub-standard transfers. I'm confused by Ward's "state of the art in '93' comments, as they went back to the original negatives and cleaned them up in '97 before messing around with them. Surely they must have those unaltered versions available?

It'll be nice to have them, but I'm not anticipating a high quality release. They didn't do this for the fans or because of a petition, they did it because they wanted to squeeze more cash out of a franchise that has effectively run its course. I did find this interesting though:

This new set of DVDs does not constitute "George changing his mind," says Lucasfilm's Jim Ward. "What we've always said is George viewed the revised versions of the films as the definitive versions."

Strange, I must have imagined all the quotes where Lucas said the 'original' versions no longer exist...

I'm not expecting a huge effort to release it. I've said it a dozen times already, but I'm glad because if they don't tamper with it, they can't screw it up and have it be different from the original release. The last thing we need is an alternate special edition with only a few fringe "corrections." The only thing that annoys me is how it's a bonus feature to the 2004 releases. It pisses me off that they'll be releasing the 2004 versions for the third time in two years! If this had been the first release of this new version alongside the originals, it would be kinda cool. But they've already suckered people into buying the new versions twice, and now he's going to do it again by luring us in with the originals, which are being advertised as "bonus content"! Bonus content?! You think we're actually buying this for the new versions? The theatricals should be released as the main content with the 2004s being the "bonus content".

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

I don't know can't we just be happy that they are finally out. No more hybrids, Laser disk corrected versions. I have to say that many talented people put those together but finally we get DVD quality releases like we remember them. There is always a money motivation for everything. George didn't make these movies not to make money so, so what. Just as long as there are no Greedo shooting first, or Hayden looking pissed at the end of Jedi then I will be happy.

They're not out yet, though, and anything can happen in four months. The price is far too steep, though.

Lol... he pulled the same thing with the Special Editions. Apparently they were only going to be able to be seen in the cinema...

the September after their summer release they were withdrawn from cinemas for VHS sale. The student cinema I worked at couldn't show the Special Editions as they had been withdrawn.

Then if you remember, Star Wars wasn't going to be released on DVD until the prequels were finished. Yet Episode I DVD was released, just in time for Christmas a few months prior to Episode II being released in the cinemas.

Lucas never changed his mind, he planned on selling us VHS and DVD versions (as many as possible). It has been said that he is a better business man than a director. I remember reading he grossed $5.6 billion from the Star Wars franchise prior to 1995, god knows what it is now.

...were on to you George.

I can understand everyone's concerns, but personally I am very happy about the OT release. It would be nice if this was an OT only release rather than a bonus material deal, but all in all I think we got want we wanted. One thing though - I really hope we get decent OT artwork covers this time round.

Great cartoon BTW.

That will be any easy fix anyway. Besides, there have been some fantastic ones submitted here already.

No shit. I would LOVE to see this be released as it's own DVD (it would me cheaper too), but the Lucas gang still won't admit that they made a mistake at denying us the OOT in the first place. They are still trying to hush-hush it as much as possible. To them this is nothing but damage control.

And the artwork better not suck. I don't want to see any lousy 2004 Photoshop jobs on these covers. And no SE crap either. They better be original covers. But I doubt we'll get that. We are getting the bare minimum from Lucas. Not that I'm ungrateful, but I should't have to be "greatful" in the first place if he wasnt' such an ass.

I suspect we'll get the exact same covers as before. The only difference will be that these are 2-disc cases instead of one disc cases.
