Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this image is from the Special Edition!

Han: Hey Lando! You kept your promise, right? Not a scratch?
Lando: Well, what’s left of her isn’t scratched. All the scratched parts got knocked off along the way.
Han (exasperated): Knocked off?!

I think it is, but it is what I could find quickly that looked decent. Sorry...

No that is Ackbar.
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

I still think the value of "OriginalTrilogy.com" will remain as we move to hi-def formats. In a few years, having the O-OT on DVD will be as obsolete as having it on VHS. If Lucas releases the saga on Blu-Ray or whatever and fails to give a hi-def xfer of the O-OT, our battle will begin anew.

Can't say I agree.

The battle will no longer be in the hands of people who just want a long-lasting copy of the movies they grew up with. DVD is high enough quality for a lot of people. For instance - I've long looked for things like Moth3r's project, because I just want some copy of the movie that will outlast me, and I didn't want to dick around with VHS anymore.

This is no longer an issue, assuming this DVD release is done well.

To say that DVD will be as obsolete as VHS isn't quite true. A VHS tape degrades over time, even if you take good care of it. A DVD won't really change at all provided you maintain the thing. The technology itself might become outmoded and unfashionable, but DVD's won't be out-of-the-picture for the same reason as VHS. VHS is dead because it sucks. DVD's will probably fade from popularity because people generally suck and don't know a good thing when they've got it.

The battle will most likely be taken up by hobbyists. Hi-Def to me is just superfluous, I don't have a TV which would gain anything from such technology, and my computer screen ain't so big either.
DVD quality is good enough for most people. There just won't be enough people who care that much to make such a push.

However, what I see happening is - now that they've got it in some releasable form, surely it'd be easier for them to put onto hi-def? I mean, if it's there, then it can't be that much trouble for them to just throw it in anyway.

And finally - I really wouldn't worry about the value of the site going anywhere! People love to tinker with these movies, that sort of thing will never die out.

Here's to September!

The battle will still continue. VHS was acceptable to people just over ten years ago--in over ten years from now DVD will no longer be around, likely, and cinephiles will either be full-fledged into HD or some kind of next-gen post-HD format. DVD is already "obsolete", despite its popularity--its nothing near "archive quality", although to someone who would have been content with VHS or Laserdisk it is adequete.

Also, regarding degredation--have you heard of disk rot?

Nothing has changed. We've been satisfied--for now. But in a few years time when more and more of us are using HD video as the preferred viewing format and Star Wars is not available on it the need will arise to pressure Lucasfilm to releasing it.

The battles quieted down but its not over at all.

Which is precisely why we all have to buy the September release. If it's a hit, they'll keep releasing it in the new formats.

Basically, disks decompose over time, just like VHS tapes, although they dont get worn out due to use (they DO however get scratched, and thus are just as fragile, if not moreso). Also copying disks leads to generational loss just like VHS does, although not nearly on the same scale.

So while disks are better than tapes in many respects they are still fraught with the same problems. The only way to overcome these is to have the actual data files but then this opens up a whole new set of problems.

My very first LD purchase in 1986 suffered disc rot. I've yet to encounter DVD rot. And how can there be loss copying digital files?

Not loss but stuff like corruption, etc.

Corruption, that'd only occur in a proper DVD if you scratch the surface. We're not talking about DVD-R, where the dye supposedly shifts over time. We're talking about pressed ones. Unscratched, these should last longer than I will. It's less a discussion about the quality of the medium, and more self-responsibility I should think.

I totally understand what you mean about DVD being less desirable or whatever, but what I'm getting at is that VHS and DVD become obsolete for different reasons. VHS *should* be obsolete. It's crap. DVD sure isn't HD, but it's more than enough for a lot of people, and the store-bought discs should last a very long time.
