Hee, hee! You know, these sorts of picking-on-spelling-and-punctuation posts have a lot more weight when they themselves aren't riddled with errors (I count at least five)...

I think a one-week vacation sounds like a plan. I typically enjoyed ocpmovie's posts and stuff, until earlier this week. I like a good (if twisted) sense of humour, but this stuff went somewhat over the line. I hope ocpmovie takes it like a man, and makes a welcome, well-mannered return. I'm looking forward to things getting back to normal, no harm, no foul.

I called SephirothTNH an "embasile" and of course its, "imbasile"....anyway like SephirothTNH said, water under the bridge....

I just didn't like the attacks on the X0 project and couldn't stand by anymore while OCP and others took their shots....

and like I said before, I can't wait untill the X0 DVDs are out....may your coffee mug, ( or diet coke can ) never run dry MeBeJedi...

...pump the caffine hard and kick some ass on those transfers....LOL

I love everybody. Lets all smoke some reefer and chill. Hug and kisses for everybody.

I'm glad at least someone else noticed this; all I really wanted was a reasonable explanation of why my thread was closed. I can handle it being closed, but even after making an irrefutable argument in its defense, I was brushed off. I find that insulting and hypocritical, since others have provided titles which already do exist and are domestically available, and yet are allowed to get away with it.

For the last time, you were not brushed off. I just started a new job working much longer hours, I moved into a new house, and I've been out of town almost every weekend for the past 6 weeks. Your question simply did not take priority in my life, and Moth3r and Zion can't make that sort of decision without my input.

You need to get over the whole Ong Bak thing. Seriously.

Your thread was closed pending administrator discussion regarding its content. The conclusion was that "custom DVDs" such as your Ong Bak release may be discussed, but may not be referred to as a "fan edit" because there wasn't any real editing going on.

If there are threads discussing the availability of materials available at retail, please direct me to them so they can be locked immediately. Just like police in the real world, we can't moderate 100% of the content here 100% of the time. I don't read every thread, and I'm sure Moth3r and Zion don't have the time to either.

Regarding ocpmovie, I support Zion's decision. ocpmovie was acting like an ass, and when he made changes to the edits Zion made to his post, he crossed the line. He's welcome to come back if he wishes to continue posting here, but trolls will always be treated like trolls no matter how much street cred they may have.

I hope he is big enough to come back and get back into the forums again and I am glad to see the forums return to some normality.

It can get crazy on forums sometimes, and it is easy for anyone to get overly hot under the collar or think people are out to get them as it is so easy to read things into the written word.

If all the players were down at the pub together discussing this, it would never get that far, you could see the cheeky grin, or body language or whatever and it wouldn't escalate. With the written word it tends to escalate quickly and get nasty as the nuance is always lost, and the reader tends to project their own feelings into the other persons posts.

It is an interesting point about the board though, I guess once a release is reality, then the board will have to change radically.

One thing seems to be confused though, I don't think a single person has categorically stated that they are unhappy that Lucas is releasing the unaltered trilogy.

There is some concern that it may have been a low quality release, but that it about it. Even the X0 site has a big celebratory statement on their front page.
People may be a little cynical or suspicious, but I think every single person here is happy that the official release is going to happen.

Unfortunately, he was griping about his banning in the Yahoo swcutscenes group yesterday.

The good part of that Yahoo SWCutScenes post was that even though at the time he still didn't seem to understand what went down, he at least points to the right thread which has some more indepth explanations for how things played out and why people responded as they did.

Question, when banned is that just from posting or from reading as well?

Wow, I'm a bit late with this. I had a Laserdisc player and a hundred or so discs, and I had no idea they ever made an anamorphic disc.

Was that a later addition like in Japan where they were still building units for the hardcore while everyone else was switching to DVD?

That's an easy mistake to make since most AV enthusiasts were on to DVD shortly after the first few AC3 laserdiscs were hitting shelves.

Btw, when did we start harassing people for typing mistakes? Man talk about childish.

I hope OCP cools down and comes back, he may be strongly emotional about his views right now, but he is a damn productive member of this community.

We only harass for mistakes when the person making the mistake is pointing out similar mistakes in others, such as when one poster argued that 2 + 4 = 4, thus apparently proving that LDs were dead.

it's supposed to be a reference to 1984 I think by george orwell.

but I think it's was 2+2=6 or am I wrong?

And for all of us who don't own HD tv's laserdisc will be the best format because of the pcm audio and the not badly compressed picture of dvd.

Besides the fact that every cinephile and audiophile I know own's a laserdisc player, heck they probalbly own record players too I know I do.

Widescreen sets first appeared in the early 90's. A few anamorphic LD's were sold with them. None were sold by themselves, AFAIK. Most titles came out in Japan only and are called "squeeze" Laserdiscs. Some European players could send a signal to a properly equipped widescreen set to unsquish it's picture. As Pioneer used similar parts across it's product lines, you can find a "16:9" LED hidden in the display panels of some U.S. models.
AC3 and DTS Laserdiscs were on the market at least three years before DVD even hit the shelves. It's a pity we never got a version of the Hi-Def stuff over here.

I need a good record player. I have a 2 LP set of the ANH soundtrack that I got for 5 bucks at a Rhino records clear-out. Good thing I looked around.

There were 20 "Squeeze" laserdiscs and three "Test/Demo" discs produced.

Japan-NTSC:
  1. Alaska:Last Frontier (1994)
  2. Basic Instinct (1992)
  3. Cliffhanger (1993)
  4. Cutthroat Island (1995)
  5. Gaia's Daughter (1996)
  6. Julius Caesar (1970)
  7. Ordinary Europe
  8. Showgirls (1995)
  9. Stargate (1994)
  10. Tahiti
  11. Test Disc for Wide Television (1995)
  12. Terminator 2 (1991)
  13. Terminator 2 THX certified

Germany-PAL:
  1. Mikrokosmos - Das Volk der Gräser (1996)
  2. Schlafes Bruder (1995)
  3. Schlafes Bruder (DTS)
  4. Showgirls

UK-PAL:
  1. SONY:LCD Projection WIDE/Super Trinitron WIDE (1996)
  2. SONY:Super Trinitron Wide (1995)

US-NTSC:
  1. Free Willy (1993)
  2. The Fugitive (1993)
  3. Grumpy Old Men (1993)
  4. Unforgiven (1992)

The US discs were never sold at retail but were free premiums with the purchase of certain Widescreen Television sets. The UK discs were obviously test discs. I have no information on the German PAL discs.

Unlike DVDs, Squeese Laserdiscs were not converted by the player but by the TV, so viewers without widescreen TVs could not view these discs undistorted.

So, yes, there were indeed some anamorphic laserdiscs produced. Just enough for internet pedantics to have an exception to point to when someone says there were no anamorphic laserdiscs.

For me, the more interesting thing is that the Back to the Future trilogy was released on LD in MUSE/Hi-Vision! Now that's something I'd like to see.
Author
Time
yes but they were 1080i which is interlaced not 1080p which is progressive which the new back to the future releases will most likely have.

I also would like to see stargate, lawrence of arabia, and close encounters which were also released on this format.

I thought there was only 720p, not 1080p. Besides, at 1080i, film based material will effectively be 1080p anyway. The signal your SD TV receives from your DVD player is 480/576i but since both fields come from the same frame, you're basically getting 25 576p frames per second (albeit with a little bit of shimmer, which is down to the display, not the source).

"I thought there was only 720p, not 1080p"

That's the current American system. The MUSE LDs were an analog hi-definition TV system in Japan, IIRC.

Besides, the American system does go all the way to 1080p. The group that made the spec knew it would be technically difficult to achieve that in broadcasting, but included it under the assumption that the technical hurdles would eventually be worked out.

For a fraction of the cost/time we are having to deal with currently, we get a MUCH BETTER RAW PRINT TO WORK WITH!

Or maybe I'm just being too optimistic meh, keeps me happy

Yes, I think really you are too optimistic. Because WHERE do you have any proof that they will use FILM as source? I find that highly unlikly becuase the DVD's will be non-anamorphic! Whatever shape the 35 mm film of the original would be, it WOULD benefit from anamorphic transfer. I believe that we will get DVD's from old composite masters (1"?) that was use for the LD transfer and that would not benefit the DVD too much. So the X0 project can still be better
