I saw this at imdb and honestly couldn't believe my eyes. WOW.

But you know - it's an interesting about-face isn't it? That Ward guy (in the announcement of the '04 set) was all "we appreciate that people want to see the originals (I'm paraphrasing heavily, I don't have his statement on me at the moment) but this is art" or some crap.

Oh well. I could care less. OoT on the way. Rock on!

I hate to be a negative nancy and piss on everyone's parade, but Lucas isn't doing this because of overwhelming demand, internet petitions, or because he's suddenly been possessed by Shebastian Shaw. It's simply a business decision. Remember this little tidbit:

"The other movie, it’s on VHS, if anybody wants it. ...[] ... it doesn’t really exist anymore."

His lawyers must have shit enough bricks to build a great wall along the mexican border. That statement would make it almost impossible to sue anybody for copying/distributing copies of the real Star Wars. How could he claim damages resulting from someone copying something that "doesn't really exist anymore?" The release of "the other movie" on dvd will change that. He'll be able to claim lost revenues for this dvd. He'll be able to sue anyone copying and/or distributing copies of TRSW and he'll win in court.

He probably wasn't lying when he said the OOT would never be released on dvd. His lawyers on the other hand, after he made the foolish statement quoted above, obviously let him know only an idiot would disown a piece of work that is such a huge money maker. A good lesson for all artists, don't ever disown a piece of work no matter how much you despise it, it may cost you considerable $$ down the road.

On the positive side, at least you get the OOT on dvd like you've always wanted! Too bad you have to buy the crap versions too! But Lucas is still the selfish fat hack he's always been. (Gee, can you tell I still hate his fatnecked guts?)

Valid points, but you can bet that anyone who's been working on transfers for the last however-many years will get their hands on the Official DVD legitimately - and if you own the home version, and you don't do it for profit...right?

I stumbled onto this board by accident some time ago while looking for someone to transfer an old Star Wars Laserdisc onto a DVD. I realized I wasn't the only person that wanted to see the original version of Star Wars. In fact, it's all I want to see. I've never seen the Special Editions or the last two prequels. Never will. I felt right at home with like-minded individuals. I visited often.

After a while, a kid joined, who's name escapes me, and started trolling and baiting people into arguments. I'm on several boards, all motorcycle related and had seen my share of the occasional trolls as well as people who go a step further, as this kid did, and choke out a board with baiting. They treat the board and it's members as online entertainment. No big deal, the internet is an awfully big place. The original version of Star Wars was never going to be released on DVD anyway, I'd said my piece regarding Lucas, signed the petition, and even got the troll riled up a few times. So I left the board, only checking in every few months to see if the troll was gone or if there was any interesting discussions going on.

Fast forward to 3:00 AM tonight. I can't sleep, so I get up, check all the motorcycle boards I'm on, read a lot and post on a few. It's been a while since I lurked over here, so I decide to check in. I glance at all the topics and one in particular catches my eye - "The Future Of This Board". I figured the board was soon to shut down because of money problems, a legal hassle with Lucasfilm, or some other reason. It was the first thread I read. I was concerned because this the ONLY place I get my Star Wars information. I'm not concerned with the pro-prequel slant on the official site or The Force site.

After reading a post or two, I start to realize the O-OT is going to be released. In a few months I'll be able to watch the original version of Star Wars. I don't care about extra features, running commentary, menu screens, etc. I just want to put the DVD in, press play, and watch the movie.

Jay, hats off to you. There's no way this board wasn't a part of Fox's decision to release those films. Your level-headedness and your keeping things civilized gave this board credibility. It wasn't just another online bitch session - it was a repository of the thoughts of real people with real ideas and passions for the original films. True fans. I'm not terribly concerned with what the quality will be. A straight transfer of the film or the early laser discs would be fine with me. I just want to watch the unaltered film - no changed characters, no added characters, no added scenes. Just Star Wars, circa 1977.

Glad George finally saw the light - even if he didn't really want to.

Forgive my photoshopping, it's late and I'm finally getting tired.

HOLY.... I'm always the last to know.

Here I was at Wondercon having to leave the panel because I didn't want to ask a question I knew the answer too.

While I've never had a need to have a DVD version since I rarely rebuy anything, I did say I'd buy these just to show George that the OOT should be preserved. Though I know for certain that the 2004 discs packaged with them will most likely be going into the trash. The only SE version I have is Darth Editious', and it will stay that way.

Fantastic news. Hopefully it carries over to future formats.

Nope, he sure doesn't!

Wonderful post, Anchorhead. Good to see you back. The troll is long gone, by the way. It's going on three months now, I believe. So sorry that tore you away. And I totally agree. I don't care if the transfer's not as good. I don't need surround sound. As long as they're true to their word, and it's the original original original original theatrical versions (any of the original sound mixes) from '77, '80, and '83, then I'll be happy.

Is it just me, or did they put back the paragraph about the original title crawl?

LOL....guess they can't make up their minds.

It's so weird seeing something like this on the official site. Are we Rebels no more?

My whole question is now that he's releasing them from video sources, etc., What's he going to release on Star Wars 30th Anniversary? Is he actually going to make the penultimate set on HD? Is he going to release a version that has the OOT, the SE OT, and the Uber Maxed out OT (with prequels).

Probably not, he wouldn't have anything left to milk then, but who knows?

Wow, it is back! That makes me feel a lot less unease. I don't know why they took it away, but it was scaring me into thinking they were going back on their position. Maybe they saw us bitch and worry about it enough to put it back. Or maybe I'm imbuing us with far too much power. But it would be nice to think that!

I read this when it was first announced. Thought I was deluisional(I was tired at the time). I come back here and, I'm glad it wasn't my imagination. I'm happy that it's finally happened. I'm really happy that it's going to have the original crawl for Star Wars. Though, I do think it's interesting that they can't keep the press release the same for more then a day.

Am I the only guy that hopes it will be "fixed" ? When I heard that it was going to be re-released in the theatres, I thought great finally get to see it only with all the effects fixed and enhanced from the 1977 state-of-the-art. Unfortunately when I did see them not only was it not fixed it actually looked worse in places. (For instance certain spots in the opening shots seemed to change tint, most likely from the deteriorated negative) - The lightsabers in the battle between Darth and Ben were not fixed either, as well as some other things I can't remember off hand. To make it worse they added the cg, the 'ring" to the death star explosion, and the trip into mos eisly, etc... Now I will buy these just to have the originals as I saw them, but I do not like the idea of keeping matte lines, bad matte painting to live action comps, and garbage mattes. What I want to see is the original story, dialogue/music/characters but to have pristine quality. Degrained, color corrected, the whole 9 yards. But it seems like I must be in the minority because i've not once seen anyone say they want a nice clean "enhanced" (but not sufficiently altered) copy. Like someone said anything to make it look better than it did in 77 yet not change the story. (I'm not sure where I was reading, but the guy made decisions to fix or clean up stuff that didn't significantly screw with the story or pacing of the original editing). Please tell me i'm not alone :-) If they are the theatrical versions with transparent cockpits, and what have you i'll still buy it, but maybe i'll make my own edit fixes these issues :-)

All they need to do is add isolated scores and make the crawl selectable for A New Hope. Personally I love the fact that they are making two disc sets with the 2004 versions. That's exactly what I did and even made covers for the discs like that. These sets will be pretty much exactly like mine. 2004 version: Disc 1, theatrical version(ISOMIX/ editdroid): Disc 2.

What about the bonus disc? They need to make a two disc set for that, disc two being whatever other bonus material isn't on DVD.

I'm afraid that for the alternate audio mixes (mono/35mm, etc) or alternate opening crawls, we'll have to have another project with these on it.

According to a post on the Star Wars board on IMDB, Lucas said this:
It is illegal to profit from Star Wars without having a licensing agreement from Lucasfilm. Obviously, we have a hard time enforcing this overseas with people selling pirated Star Wars DVDs. The reason we had to finally release the old films on DVD was because of all the illegal pirating going on. We were afraid that if we waited any longer the pirates would completely saturate and take the DVD market away from us.

Anyone know if he really said this.

Not sure, but that's the exact same thing GL said in 2004 when people asked him why he was releasing the OT (SE) ahead of schedule. Who ever it was on IMDB might just be reading an interview from 2004...or maybe not.

Well OOT on DVD is a massive step but this site has a greater task now.

1) Get the untouched OOT on HD-DVD or Blue-Ray

and

2) Get fixed versions of the 2004 release on HD-DVD or Blue-Ray (fixing light sabers and han shooting first)

So what is gonna be the big 30 year celebration next year if the OOT is coming out on DVD in September?

A big episode 1-6 DVD box maybe?

I find it hard to belive that there will be a HD-DVD/BlueRay release so soon on the new formats (but I was wrong about the OT never being released on DVD).

Uhfgood, I hear what you are saying, but I am very wary of LFL's "fixes", either for the sake of the original prints, or those intended to change Lucas' "original" vision. I'd like to get it as unmolested as possible. A blank tapestry would be best.

In other words you like everyone else who has not replied to me don't want anything fixed.

The color of the lightsaber in the falcon is a very good example. I want it to be consistant, I don't care really what color they choose as long as it's consistant -- actually it would be fairer to say, I want it as close to "right" as possible, which means correcting it along with the other ones, a different color might not do, but if it's tinted less green and more blue, or more green and less blue doesn't matter to me. In fact all the saber shots using the physical lighted device should be replace anyhow imo. The only things I don't like are complete scenes replaced by cg rather than cg enhancements. Or new cantina aliens verses the old ones. The falcon escaping Mos Eisely through the roof instead of "out the back" like in the original. These are the things that urk me. But matte lines should be removed, double exposed elements should be fixed to look opaque, garbage mattes should be removed, etc...

Maybe i'm the only one that wants a "truely" enhanced version, but then again I don't whine alot so maybe that's the problem ;-)

I really don't know about how they are going to pull this off. I mean, just having two different versions of the films is not enough for the format. What about Special features? You know, like vintage documentaries (Making of Star Wars, SPFX, From Star Wars to Jedi, etc, etc), deleted scenes, documentaries of the sound and Visual effects, easter eggs. The list goes on and on. Hopefully even with the temporary rerelease of the originals, there'll still be room on the newsgroups and bit torrents for your definitive versions of the original releases of one of Moviedom's greatest spectacles.
