ORIGINAL STAR WARS TRILOGY OUT 09/2006 BY LUCASFILM — Page 6

Well, as for the question of "where do you go from here?", I have one suggestion: Petition (read: edit your own) theatrical PT! Think about it, the changes are too small to warrant a release similar to this, so you'll never have to worry about Papanoida (assuming that he follows his current trend of turning a blind eye).

...

What? Okay, so a lot of you don't like the PT (or don't like it enough to put a "PT Classic Edition" together). What else are you going to do that's Star Wars-related? Your own private fan-edits can only keep you entertained for so long. The only other thing I can think about is preserving the episodes of the Droids and Ewoks animated series that haven't been released (unless GL plans to get off his rump and finish releasing the series, already). Just about the only thing you can do for the Holiday Special is substitute '04 DVD footage for the stock footage used in Han and Chewie's scenes. There's also the prospect of preserving the Clone Wars series in it's original, serialized form in DVD quality.

All of these projects are relatively small, though. Man, now that we're getting the OOT, what are y'all going to do?

I wouldn't pack it in or stop sharing your SW projects just yet.
Just because this is announced does _not_ mean that it will actually appear in a form we will be happy with, on the date specified, or at all for that matter.
It's happened more than once in the DVD industry for announcements to be nothing more than air.
It's real the day they go on sale (not even ship (Ed Wood was actually pulled from store shelves the first time)).

The community would suffer a major set back if we all said game over and those discs never showed up...

Even with the current news out in the open,

Out of pure curiousity, I typed the phrase "Original Star Wars On DVD" into the Google engine and hit the "I'm Feeling lucky" button.... Guess where it takes me?

Does this mean I shouldn't bother trying to download OCPs Classic Edition Trilogy from myspleen as it's gonna be taken down soon?
Author

WOW. I can't believe it.

Now, we need to change this petition to ask for...

1. Theatrical PT
2. '97 versions of the trilogy
3. Holiday Special

Let's just hope they don't scr*w up something accidentially like in the case of 2004 release...

But for the time being: OT fans: rejoyce!
I saw the original theatrical release of the Old Trilogy on the big screen and I'm proud of it...
How did I accomplish that (considering my age) is my secret...

I'm a little confused - why is Lucasfilm using the 1993 video masters? For the 2004 dvds, did they not restore the original film elements first, and then made changes like the "color correction" and CGI additions?

**Edit - Alright nevermind. These things are answered in the General Star Wars Discussion forum.

I'm sure someone will have a real answer for you, but as I noted in my ANH thread, if you watch the transition into the Jabba scene on the 2004 DVD, you can actually see, briefly, elements of the 1997 SE Jabba.

Not that it would take a massive amount of work to restore the bits they didn't restore to the same level, and splice them in, but does anyone really think that will happen?

Not sure if you guys were aware, but I just went to the starwars.com site and the reference to the original crawl is still there.

"See the title crawl to Star Wars before it was known as Episode IV; see the pioneering, if dated, motion control model work on the attack on the Death Star; groove to Lapti Nek or the Ewok Celebration song like you did when you were a kid; and yes, see Han Solo shoot first."

There as I'm seeing it now on Friday, May 5, 2006. Maybe they put it back or something.

Sure enough, it has been put back. That makes me feel a little better about what we're going to get.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

It makes me a little more worried about what else they will go back and forth about.

I think the 2004 editions are the true representation of these films, and that all copies of the original trilogy should be burned. Hope you're listening, George. You can still stop this! Burn the O-OT discs before they're mass produced! Do it!

THEN WE CAN ALL GO BACK TO LASERDIIIIIIISC

laserdisc. laserdisc. the cheat's playin something on a laserdisc. everything's better on a laserdisc. laserdisc!

I want this trilogy preserved with the best technology 1985 had to offer!

Congratulations to everyone that signed the petition and possibly influenced Lucas to make this decision. I just can't believe the news- I thought for sure it was a joke at first. Needless to say, OT.com has grown far beyond the three original movies in its edits, technical discussion, and preservation of other Star Wars material. All this announcement means is hopefully that we'll have great source material to work with. Obviously, as this is a bare bones release, there's a lot that can still be done (a mono mix and original PCM stereo version, for example).

All I have to say is this: Lucas is a shrewd businessman. If he had told us he was going to release the OOT on DVD to begin with, his Special Edition sales would have suffered- big time. I'm just glad that I didn't buy the DVD's until the real deal was released.

Long live the original Star Wars trilogy.

So does ne1 know if there has been any other announcement except the official press release. Any more details about whether it will be all cleaned up and colour corrected or if it is a straight transfer or what?
Give me the OT or give me death!

The only thing we know about quality of the upcoming release is some odd statements in that release, such as the statement that this release will be "State of the Art for 93, which is not state of the art for 2006." or something like that, as well as statements that the original movies are "bonus features" which implies they are going to be straight laserdisc transfers, and not anything new done to them.
Author
Time
Oh shit, state of the art for 1993? That is when the definitive edition laserdisc was released.
If they are just going to take the master composite videotapes and convert them to non anamorphic DVD, then they won't be much better than the existing laserdiscs on a really good player.
Surely they wouldn't do that? The backlash would be enourmous wouldn't it?

Lucas has endured tremendous backlash for all the changes he's made over the years, as well as the attitude that "these are my movies, and I can do what I want with them", and not providing a O-OT release up until now. So I think he won't really care if there is a big backlash about it.

We're just going by LFL's track record. Blame them, not us.

It looks to me from reading the various postings around the net that what we're going to see is in fact the video masters that the definitive editions were struck from. There's no reason at all that LFL would spend the money and manpower to restore them any further, as Lucas obviously feels that they are mere curiosities which some fans would like to have legally. What this DOES seem to mean, is that something like OCPMovie's classic editions (just, oh, I don't know, for example ) would benefit from better source material for the inserts (masters straight to MPEG2, not having been converted to LD format, recaptured, and then encoded). I have a feeling this site and a number of the projects are still going to be valid come September after all.
