I'm starting to get a little nervous. Somehow it seems that something is going to go wrong. This will be a very stressful four months for Star Wars fans, wondering just how "original" it's going to be. The original starwars.com post gave me great hope by saying that it will be so original it won't even include Episode IV: A New Hope. That made me excited because that's more original than any home video release of Star Wars. But they've since removed that, and I'm wondering if they'll fudge a bit by removing matte lines and stuff like that. I want bare bones. I don't want any changes made to this. I want it to be as if I was alive in 1977 and getting to watch the movies in theatres. That's the experience I've always desired, and I sure as hell had better get it, or we'll just be right back to square one! I hope this fulfills my expectations.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

I think in the future this is how it's going to work: Lucas will want to release his versions first, and then he will release the original original after that. I think this release is a glimpse of things to come. Sure the transfer may not be totally spot on, but what transfer really is all at once? I never really hated Lucas, I just wondered why he did it this way to begin with. Did his kids really want to see what he originally had in mind or did he alter it out of spite for his ex-wife. Whatever the reason, what's done is done and in the past. I see this release as a step in the right direction for George. I think when all is said and done, he'll want to really be rembered for the O-OT.

I really think now that the O-OT will not only come out on dvd, but hd-dvd and blu-ray. I think we as the fans just need to be patient and George will come around to making the 5.1 mix for the unaltered trilogy, along with a really outstanding picture quality.

Don't know if anyone else has mentioned it with all the talk about the release but did anyone else notice the article was careful not to really bring George Lucas *into* the whole situation?

In response to overwhelming demand, Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release attractively priced individual two-disc releases of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

"Over the years, a truly countless number of fans have told us that they would love to see and own the original version that they remember experiencing in theaters," said Jim Ward, President of LucasArts and Senior Vice President of Lucasfilm Ltd. "We returned to the Lucasfilm Archives to search exhaustively for source material that could be presented on DVD. This is something that we're very excited to be able to give to fans in response to their continuing enthusiasm for Star Wars."

Perhaps a mutiny of more level headed individuals prevailed, or perhaps the 100s of people depending on LFL for a paycheck?

Either way... WHOOHOO!!

I go away for one day and look at all the good that happens. Maybe I should stay gone all together.

Words can hardly express my joy. My hypothesis has been proven wrong ... that he was waiting for Blu-Ray to release this. Apparently Lucas is making one final cash-grab before DVD gets relegated to the dust-bin of history. I for one will be pre-ordering the moment it goes onto Amazon. And once my money officially places it on hold, I will feel justified in selling off my 2004 set while I can still get a wee bit of cash for it. Given that the new set will have both editions, I don't mind at all. My two versions of E.T. co-exist peacefully, even if one never gets played.

Now, the big question remains: will the "unaltered" trilogy be truly unaltered as Daniel B. (like Voldemort, I do not fear to speak that evil name) would have it, or will the garbage mattes be removed as part of color correction. I'm all for the removal of garbage mattes. My question from 18 months ago stands: For how many of you would that constitute an "altered" trilogy, vs being the O-OT?

Other smaller questions remain:
Will there be an optional angle with the original crawl in Star Wars?
Will there be options for the original sound mixes (including the rare mono mix)?
What will Beru sound like?
Will Luke say Blast it Biggs or Blast it Wedge?
Will Artoo not taste good, or will he just be lucky to get out of there?
Will the lightsabers and explosions be the right color?
Will we all get invited to The Ranch for the premiere?
I am fluent in over six million forms of procrastination.

Yeah, greencapt, I noticed that the first time I read that as well and kinda smiled. George wasn't mentioned at all. The whole time I was reading it, I was picturing George hunched up in a corner of a dark room grumbling that his company managed to wrench his hidden movies away from him. I wouldn't be surprised if he was really pissed about this but just relenting it for the cash and to keep us from storming the ranch one of these days.

And ADigitalMan, I'd love to hear Beru's original voice. They claim these are the 1977 theatrical versions, so I'd better hear it. I want those garbage mattes there, but not as obvious as they were in the 2004 releases, but like they were in previous releases. I've said all this in other threads, but there are so many of them, I can't keep up with which one is which.

At last Lucas has returned to the light side of the force and redeemed himself. Balance has returned to the Star Wars universe. There still was good in him, we were right about him. Tell your friends, we were right!
I don't think there's any question this wouldn't have happened without this site and maybe even the X0 project which would give the existing official set a run for the money.

Take back the trilogy. Execute Order '77

Now, let's just hope that it doesn't suck! I want them to be good and original, but I want good quality sound too. No fuzz or hairs on the screen from the film. This isn't a 1920's silent movie. Lucas, don't piss this away.

I hate to be a negative nancy and piss on everyone's parade, but Lucas isn't doing this because of overwhelming demand, internet petitions, or because he's suddenly been possessed by Shebastian Shaw. It's simply a business decision. Remember this little tidbit:

"The other movie, it’s on VHS, if anybody wants it. ...[] ... it doesn’t really exist anymore."

His lawyers must have shit enough bricks to build a great wall along the mexican border. That statement would make it almost impossible to sue anybody for copying/distributing copies of the real Star Wars. How could he claim damages resulting from someone copying something that "doesn't really exist anymore?" The release of "the other movie" on dvd will change that. He'll be able to claim lost revenues for this dvd. He'll be able to sue anyone copying and/or distributing copies of TRSW and he'll win in court.

He probably wasn't lying when he said the OOT would never be released on dvd. His lawyers on the other hand, after he made the foolish statement quoted above, obviously let him know only an idiot would disown a piece of work that is such a huge money maker. A good lesson for all artists, don't ever disown a piece of work no matter how much you despise it, it may cost you considerable $$ down the road.

On the positive side, at least you get the OOT on dvd like you've always wanted! Too bad you have to buy the crap versions too! But Lucas is still the selfish fat hack he's always been. (Gee, can you tell I still hate his fatnecked guts?)

A filmmaker named George Lucas, who was a pupil of mine before he turned to evil, helped 20th century fox hunt down and destroy the original original trilogy. He betrayed and murdered the movies. Now the original prints are all but extinct. Lucas was seduced by cgi.

LOL! That's awesome!

Lucas SWORE he wouldn't release them. So did he cave in to pressure? Did he come see the light? Perhaps. but... the cynic in me wonders if this wasn't a slick marketing move. tell people that thee special editions are the only version he will release, convince everyone who wants it to buy it. and then release the originals, and get more money.

On the other hand, he's richer then god, so he has no need to...

Whatever. He's releasing them and I'm happy (and they'll actually have both the original and the SE on the disc which is great, cause I've never seen the SE ROTJ and I am curious to see it...

I'm tempted to believe that too, as I would never have bought the 2004 DVDs, had I known this was coming two years later. Damn!

I think its so great that we all helped contribute to this. I suspected that the OOT would be available but never, never this soon. The detail on those models is going to look so sweet on dvd.

hahaha Ya we should petition for the HS and The Lost Cut lol.
