> I think a lot of people need to take a step back and think about this for a second. A lot of you are asking some very valid questions. A couple of you can't seem to handle the news and have reverted to posting like a 3rd grader on AOL for the first time.

I believe that IS a symptom of stepping back and thinking about this for a second. In all its forms.

I seem to be a form of all three people you referred to there, but I won't take it personally.

Anyway, shit - clearly they DID read this forum. They're stealing our fucking ideas! Original crawl and now this:

http://starwars.com/collecting/shop/shopnews/news20060503.html

WHAT? That's not their shirt! That's an OT shirt! Legacy edition, right?

They should be sued for that ... except they own Han and OT doesn't.

Hm.

Citizen ... Tequila Mockingbird and I are doing something with Howard the Duck probably, a widescreen version of it .... and also an extended pan & scan cut of The Muppet Movie.

Well, er, he's doing em cos he's got em. I'll be ... looking at em. And getting em.

When I first found out this morning I couldn't believe it was true.

I really hope the transfer has been done properly, with no crushed blacks or unnatural colour boosting.

Glad I got my trilogy completed, I guess there's no need for a V1.1 now!

But there's still the mono mix restoration...

Hey come on, we take their property, they take our ideas. It's a two-way thing. Thanks for the 3rd grader comment - liked it You have such a way with words.

I'm half expecting a 'cease and desist letter' to appear on OT.com soon along with the shutdown of myspleen and the imprisonment of myself and Ocp. Hopefully the meals might be better than those on airlines I've flown with lately.

Well done to all of us at originaltrilogy.com for convincing Lucasfilm marketing that there is a valid commercial environment for them release the trilogy once (twice?) again. I think if nothing else this shows that a group of like-minded individuals can get together and prove to number crunchers that things add up.

God Bless the T'internet! (ignore the sarcasm, I am really pleased

Widescreen? how? the only officially released Howard versions have been cropped 4:3, anyway I've been toying with filters and this is a small sample of what I've gotten from the rather grainy LD: HowardSample.avi 9.11mb, 640x480 XviD/mp3.
BTW I also have the soundtrack LP and the 12" LP which has a slightly remixed version of the main theme and the proper Lea Thompson vocal version of "Don't Turn Away".

edit: HELL HAS FROZEN OVER!!

BTW I'm not finished with Blade Runner yet, I've completed a PAL transfer of the HDTV broadcast and added a 2nd 5.1 track which has Deckard's voiceover mixed into the rear channels and will be re-doing the LD transfer to a level where it'll look almost as good as the official DC DVD.

Not to get too off-topic, but I have a 12" EP of the theme song (to Howard) with an extended dance mix. Crazy!

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

It makes me really sad to read that OCPMovie could feel that all the work he put into preserving these movies amounted to nothing since they're now being officially released. Something that I think is worth pointing out is that preservationists like you were the fire under the butt of George Lucas.

Every person here who was donating their free time to making the best version of these movies from such limited resources are the ONLY reason that Lucasfilm is officially releasing this movie.

If all that people did on this forum was bitch and complain about how they couldn't get the original versions of the movies they fell in love with on DVD and didn't do anything about it Lucasfilm wouldn't have done a god damn thing. What really made them realize how much potential money they were losing was seeing how willing people were to bring these lost versions to fruition themselves, and even crazier GIVING AWAY said product of their blood, sweat and tears. All of you who took the initiative and upon hearing Lucas say "I will never release that version of the trilogy on DVD" picked yourselves up by your bootstraps and slogged through the tedious work of making it happen showed him how seriously we wanted to see these.

I know that there's no way to qualify this statement but I think what really made Lucas realize how much we wanted this was finding out what the X0Project was accomplishing. I think at the very least (via one of his underlings) Lucas was to some degree aware of what a fine product these tenacious people were squeezing out of such a limited source. To use an analogy, we were all trapped in a pit and while the majority of us (myself included) gave up and whined about what a shitty predicament it was, a precious few of you set about figuring a way out using the best resources at your disposal. Now it seems that just when your dilligent work was about to get us out of the hole the person who put us there in the first place has let a ladder down. To anyone outside of that hole your efforts could seem futile and primitive, but to the people trapped in that hole with you you were our saviors, our heroes, our "only hope."

When I pop in this DVD I'm not going to thank George Lucas, I'm going to thank all of you for making an out-of-touch billionaire realize how wrong he had been. All of you willfully donated your talents, your energy, and especially your time into helping this community relive these cherised moments in our lives. I thank all of you from the very bottom of my heart and salute your accomplishments.

>> Widescreen? how? the only officially released Howard versions have been cropped 4:3

It was shown on TV in widescreen apparently, and Ben, a pro who has a great collection, snagged it digitally.

It's bizarre that there are no bargain basement DVD releases of Howard. Lucas ...

Any bonus material you have, keep it at the ready -- once I get all the Thief and the Cobbler etc stuff from Ben, when it's in my hands, you'll see a Howard the Duck thread in forum 11. Mark my words. Ditto Muppet movie extended. These are sort of backburner to the big Thief project, but they do seem to be happening.

ADDITIONAL:
Doctor M -- as I said I don't feel like talking about what I was planning to do, since it's silly now ... but the main increase in quality was gonna be that I was using your remixes for the LD stuff. =) Great work there. Many thanks to Moth3r for doing such great PAL transfers. And thanks to you for remixing them for NTSCers. Well done folks.

Actually, no.

I'm not saying it wasn't a contributing factor, it more than likely most DEFINITELY was, but LFL Marketing has been itching to put these on DVD since the format first showed up. No joke. Jim Ward has been pushing for it for awhile now. He finally got it. This was probably going to happen sooner or later--but that IS where you come in. It happened sooner, a LOT sooner than anyone thought, and a lot of that has to do with the demand and this place putting in the work.

but it's not the ONLY reason. Economics is playing the biggest role, let's be real. LFL wants something for the 4th quarter to increase numbers. What better than a double-dip of the 2004's (A triple dip, actually) with the originals being a special feature? C'mon.

But I don't think this happens in 2006 without rabid fans clamoring and doing for themselves in the meantime

Apologies to TheBizzle, I tend to forget how dangerous absolute values like "only" can be. It wasn't my intent to piss on the valuable work of other people (particularly someone like Jim Ward who is involved in a professional capacity) working to preserve the original trilogy, all I intended was to let people like OCPMovie and Zion and Laserman and MeBeJedi and Moth3r and ADigitalMan and Rikter know how important I think their accomplishments are. They're my heroes.

Unable to find alcohol, I lay down and thought about this.

I fought to get At Last the 1948 Show on DVD for a long time (and Do Not Adjust Your Set). Finally they released a DVD set, and it was indeed At Last the 1948 Show (and Do Not Adjust Your Set) and it was wonderful ... but it was none of the episodes I had, or had seen. It was all new to me. I loved it, but they hadn't released what I'd expected. And they still haven't. They released other stuff.

I fought to get the rather crap Rutles 2 released actually, and when it came out no one cared including me.

I fought to get Rutland Weekend Television released, and now it's been announced.

I wanted the Frighteners extended LD released - Alex was working on a version of it - then it came out, which was nice.

All this is nice.

But, y'know, you spend so much time fighting these battles, you're not a regular consumer anymore. Somehow you can't share in the joy in the same way. Or it takes a minute to.

When my rough cut of the Thief and the Cobbler was released on GBS.TV, somebody posted, really happily, at IMDB saying, we won! It's restored! We are the champions! We've defeated Disney, etc ...

Well ... no. No one defeated anyone. I restored a movie, the fight goes on.

It was like at the end of the Seven Samurai ... a film I haven't seen in a few years so pardon if I misquote. At the end, as I recall anyway, there's been a great victory won, but the old, experienced samurai just say to each other, it's been another battle lost.

Because so many died fighting, y'know?

We were fighting a war here, and we've won it, but we'll never be thanked for it. We, the fans, will never be thanked for our part in that. The joy we get is from the film itself, on its little picture disc.

We know, on some level, that we've been duped again. That George got us to freak out again, and buy his things over and over and over again, again.

Like when he wouldn't release Star Wars on video. Like when he wouldn't release it on DVD. Like when he wouldn't release the original versions.

It's like a cosmic joke on some level. He always hurts the ones who love him.

I feel a fool.

LOL US!

Holy crap! I haven't been around in a while (mostly lurking when I do), but the second I heard about I had to come over to OT.com and find out what was going on around here. To be honest, I'm not sure how I feel, just kinda weird-happy I suppose, but when I read that quote above by OCP, you summed things up nicely for me, so a big thanks!

You also help put things in perspective. Things have been rough for a while and I'm unemployed again, but no matter what Star Wars and especially its fans have always been there. Sure, it's just entertainment, they're fun movies, but the way they're enriched our lives, the ideas they represent, and the people they've inspired and in turn have inspired others is so much more than I can imagine.

It's clear that Star Wars fans have at its best been a wonderful kind of family (with all the good and bad that entails), and it doesn’t take much to see that the OT.com has become a very strong and supportive community. While I wish that I could contribute more to this place as others have, I'm glad that's here and for all the people that it's brought together. I may never meet any of you, but I'm thankful for all your efforts (while I only know Rikter, this pretty much goes for everyone here).

Now before all the preservationists cheer hallelujah, or give up in disgust, Lucas has just announced a new baby. Let's wait and see this sucker get delivered before we decide one way or another. I'm cautiously optimistic, but wary enough to know that not much effort will have been put into this, especially so close before the 30th anniversary (I’m sure they weren’t kidding about this: “Sources said the transfers won’t be as clean or vivid as the digitally modified versions.”) If Lucas fails its fans again, it will be the people here whom I would trust the most to safeguard the Star Wars legacy. This battle may be over, but the war goes on…

Let's wait and see just what is going to be on these discs - a capture from the 1993 laserdiscs, or a hybrid of a couple of releases etc, a suped-up OCP set?

Am expecting 'George Lucas' to start his own thread in the 'Preservation Section' shortly - though probably won't be telling us exactly how he made this set - and he may get short shrift if he starts asking for money for them...

Will Tasker writes:

heres the problem. These brand new DVDs will be using ancient video masters. Jim Ward, of Lucasfilms, comments: "The original films' video quality will not match up to that of the restored versions. 'It is state of the art, as of 1993, and that's not as good as state of the art 2006,' Ward says." That quote can be found in this article from USA Today.

http://www.usatoday.com/life/movies/news/2006-05-03-star-wars_x.htm

Some of the worst official dvd releases out there for movies have simply been laser masters dumped onto dvd with no care involved. And that's exactly what we'll be getting from the company that at one time was at the forefront of producing quality presentations.

----

It seems as if this release is ... and I had had a sad suspicion of this ... intended to make the 2004 releases look better by comparison.

Oh well. Color correct the 2004 version and edit the shots from this into it, and you'll be fine.

No keep it as it was as that is how we saw it, there is NO reason to use cleaned up footage from the 2004 version; that would be REAL lame as it WOULD not be the OT.

"When you guys heard the news...did anybody else feel "sad" or weird....like they knew it was never going to happen and accepted it and now that we can have it....we dont want it? "

Considering how much more work ANH was going to need, it felt like a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders - but I'm not getting rid of my source files yet.

"if they include the Star Wars commentary created for the Classic Edition."

That's a good idea. I think it's a safe bet these new ones won't have one.

"Anyway, shit - clearly they DID read this forum. They're stealing our fucking ideas! Original crawl and now this:"

Actually, that'll be good ammunition at TF.n for all the dudes who keep insisting that Han and Greedo shot together because the "official DVDs" say so (and even more so to the dingbats who say that "Han Shot First" makes no sense because in the OT, Greedo never even shot. )

"I really hope the transfer has been done properly, with no crushed blacks or unnatural colour boosting."

Like I said, there's a thousand ways to screw it up. We'll see if LFL learned from their first release.

"I'm not saying it wasn't a contributing factor, it more than likely most DEFINITELY was, but LFL Marketing has been itching to put these on DVD since the format first showed up. No joke. For once, I am entirely in agreement with The Bizzle. I'm sure LFL has its own share of people who are doing this for love of the O-OT, and well as those who are in it for the money as well.

There's many reasons to explain why this is happening, and most of them are most likely true. Regardless, it's happening.

"I don't normally curse in the forums but...... but"

I've done it once, I believe.

"Some of the worst official dvd releases out there for movies have simply been laser masters dumped onto dvd with no care involved. And that's exactly what we'll be getting from the company that at one time was at the forefront of producing quality presentations."

I've worried about this scenario as well. Lucas can't really win with this release, so it would be easy for him to release a mediocre version under the guise of "giving the fans what they want". Still, at the very least, it gives us the best source material we could ask for for future fan edits.

"there is NO reason to use cleaned up footage from the 2004 version"

No, but then comes the debate - should it be cleaned up at all? Or at the very least, cleaned up better than was done with the '04 DVDs (color correction, etc.)

[EDIT] Ran across this at the Basher's Sanctuary at TF.n: "And anyone else notice that the press release says 'Star Wars' and not 'A New Hope'

The DVDs are listed as 'attractively priced'

I have a bad feeling about this.

FANS: Let's just say we'd like to avoid any special editions.

LUCAS: Well, that's the trick, isn't it? And it's going to cost you
something extra. $999.99 in advance.

<span class=“Italics”>MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.
<span class=“Bold”>JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.</span></span>

<span class=“Italics”>MeBeJedi: You aren’t one of us.
<span class=“Bold”>Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.</span></span>

<span class=“Italics”>JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.</span>

The USA Today article says they will be $30 each, but hopefully considering how DVDs are usually priced and then sold at, they will sell at $15-$20 each. Now my question is why a 2 disc set? If I read correctly, the DVDs will have the O-OT, and then a second disc that has the '04 SSE DVDs. Why? Why not restore the old making ofs or something? some sort of bonus disc?
Why are they continually repackaging the '04 SSEs? Did they print up so many of them, that they have cases of them sitting in some warehouse that they are desperate to get rid of? I mean, first the '04 boxset with bonus disc, then the '05 boxest with no bonus disc, but the same exact films, now the O-OT with the '04 SSE discs. Maybe this is more of an inventory-clearing measure...

Now I'm just hoping that is looks better than I'm afraid it might be. I'm not going to buy it if my DE laserdisc set is better or equal quality.
But I'm still happy to have these out on DVD.
