That is SOOO weird. The Australian editions must have been numbered differently in those days! That is the same cover with a few exceptions. The copy I have here (which I am borrowing from a friend) has:

- "Marvel (R) Australian Edition" in place of the price (60c) and the issue number (238)
- "Federal Presents" in place of "Marvel Comics Group"
- "Federal COMICS ARE THE RAGE!" in place of the barcode
- "No. 6" in a small box above "In the Shadow of Evils Past!"
AND
- "ALL COLOR" in place of the free tattoo offer (which is stupid, seeing as this is meant to be an Australian edition and they spell it 'color' anyway)

So I guess we've solved the conundrum. This "Federal Comics" company must have been distributing Marvel Comics in Australia in the early 80s and decided to take the liberty of renumbering the issues! Thanks for the help, guys.

Bikini MJ is only featured in the background of one panel. In any case, I don't have a working scanner on-hand, but it would be a fruitless endeavour nonetheless (being that she'd be about 5mm in height and 2mm in width!).

Redbaron (and others),

Well, guess thats all cleared up for the most part. I didnt have the comics in front of me so pulled up all the issue numbers and such from www.spiderfan.org THX you seem pretty knowledgeable on the Spider-Man comics, big fan?

They did restart the numbering after i think (from memory) #441, this was v2 which ran for 58 (or 60 have conflicting info) issues. it was then returned to v1 (which is current) and i believe they picked up the numbering from 500 (where v1 would have been if v2 was all part of v1). Im not sure on this so if anyone knows for sure that would be great.

I do know that some stories were reprinted under different titles, but you said the title of yours is The Amazing Spider-Man[\i] so i am at a loss as to why it would be number 6. though based on what you posted it seems they did keep the real issue number on there.

whats strange is i remember the scene with MJ saying she's going to the beach, but i remember it from one of the ones before we finally see her but her face is obscured. I thought that was the first time they showed her, but ive only read the first 110 comics.

I started collecting in the UK and the Spiderman titles were released in a totally different format with different numbering there, so the Australian thing doesn't surprise me, redbaron. What does surprise me is that you said your #6 is dated 1982, while the US #238 came out in March 1983 - I find it hard to believe the Aussie release would be first.

I had another look at it this morning, and there is no actual dating on there per sé (as in, it doesn't have the month and year prominently displayed). The '1982' was written on the spine, and it's actually just a copyright - "(c)1982 Marvel Comics Group". So, it could well be that the comic was finished in 1982, then mass-produced and distributed from '83 onwards. On the inside page, it says that Marvel copyrighted it, and the "Federal Publishing Company Pty. Ltd." copyrighted it in 1985. This is probably because Marvel didn't have a subsidiary in Australia - and American copyrights aren't binding in Australia - so Federal Comics probably took the liberty of copyrighting it and distributing it in Australia.

There are a few interesting stories about Australian fast food copyrights that I know of, but that's a story for another thread...
