The Thief and the Cobbler: Recobbled Director's Cut (Released) — Page 33

Man, I tell you what. After stupidly posting in the Roger Rabbit thread, I started reading this one and I, well, became enthralled. It was really intriguing, and it took me most of last night before bed and today at 10AM until around 6AM to read/listen to everything.

It's awesome that so many people involved in the production of this reached out and helped you.

I know I've actually seen this (or at least part of it) when I was younger, though I don't remember all of it. So much of the animation is stunning though. And its sordid history is fascinating. I can't wait to see your version when you finish.

I saw this scan of a cel earlier in the thread, and figured I could at least contribute a little something, so I cleaned it up, and also added the veil on-

http://www.wordpainter.net/stuff/thiefandthecobbler/princessyumyum01.png
http://www.wordpainter.net/stuff/thiefandthecobbler/princessyumyum02.png

It just seemed the heavy jpeg compression didn't do it justice, and someone lamented that she didn't look right sans veil. It's interesting, since when I did the veil in Photoshop, I noticed the pearls on the necklace weren't the right color.. so I'm assuming when they did the veil overlay they recolored the pearls as well. Anyway, the veil isn't 100% perfect, but it's close enough. I didn't 100% get rid of the jpeg artifacts, either, but I was trying to balance it out and not lose the true artyness of it. (Plus I only spent about 10 minutes recoloring it.)

Anyway, cheers to your work!

I got a response from UCLA and they don't know who the current distributor is. They can't make copies, obviously, though. I'm going to see if I can find out anything from Fox.

Normally round this time I'd be doing my usual nice quick editing job, and getting the video for Pt. 2 of the Recobbled Final Cut in order.

But, as you know, money issues have reared their ugly head and I don't know if I'll have anywhere to sleep in four, five days. No money, nowhere to go, etc.

Because I'm an idiot, I've continued to work a bit on the Recobbled Final Cut, because I want SOMETHING nicer than the rough cut done before I leave this place.

The Final Cut will still be done in May.

But at the moment I've created the Rough Cut version 1.5, which will become the Rough Cut 2.0 by tomorrow.

Since part 1 of the film now has pretty much final video, and I secretly had another completed version of pt 2 (done with the Stanch workprint) which I never showed anybody, which is not as good as the Emule workprint but better than the Rough Cut workprint ...

I figured I'd put that better version of the film onto DVD, for the time being.

So ...

Recobbled Rough Cut version 1.5 .... This has the basically finished video for the first half of the film. (Although with mostly the old crappy audio.) This is what you saw on Youtube. The second half is the same old version from the Recobbled Rough Cut.

Recobbled Rough Cut version 2 -- rendering this one out now. This has the basically finished video for the first half of the film. (Although with mostly the old crappy audio.) For the second half, I've started off with a couple of "final" quality scenes, and the rest is from the Stanch workprint, which is better than the Recobbled Rough Cut, but not as good as the final.

So, whoever I send the rough cut to in the next couple weeks will get this version ... kind of a stopgap solution.

Anyone who wants to mail me something within the next couple weeks can mail it to my friend Jason:

Just mark that it's for Garrett Gilchrist, and he'll get the idea.

Best wishes, guys. I'll keep you updated.

Last night I cut the Tack/Zigzag fight out of the film.

Today I had second thoughts and put some of it back.

As I've said before, you need SOMETHING there .... Tack needs to do something heroic at this point, and it has to take your mind off The Thief's adventures for a second.

So I've left in the following:

First "break from the Thief" -- Same as in the rough cut. One Eye cries. Zigzag comes in on his horse, tries to kidnap Yumyum, she throws him off his horse, Cobbler's foot comes into frame.

Second "break from the Thief" -- I moved up the death of One Eye and put it here. I hate to kill off a main villain this early but there's a long Thief section coming up and I need to beef up this break. Cut to: Zigzag is choking Tack. Tack ties Zigzag up. Yumyum reacts.

That's literally it. I cut the entire fight down to four quick shots with no fighting in them, and nothing that you could construe as out of character for anyone. I even cut the Tack/Yumyum hug.

The animation here isn't good - the actual fight is much better animated - but I think it'll do.

I would prefer to leave this scene in entirely, as it is in the rough cut, but this very short cut of it should give less to complain about.

I know it doesn't really help...but you're welcome to jump on a plane and live at mine. Bit expensive though, and probably cheaper to find a place.

Regarding Mpeg2 - it takes a night to render out a few seconds and always crashes. I'm more than happy to help out and offer what I can, but only in the way that I know I can do quickly.

Been thinking about that DVD recorder though, and will look in to that if time comes up.

I'm still indifferent about the fight scene, but at least it's not that bad when edited down like in the rough cut. I can't help but laugh at "What, cobbler?" since it's such a horrible Price imitation. The gag with the Thief being lifted up isn't bad, either, since he really does come off as a hero. The only problem is that the guards don't seem to be responsive to his horrible stench...

One thought... I really love is the whole banana leaves flight sequence. The Thief finally finds something he enjoys besides stealing.

I really feel awful that I can't help much with your situation, Garrett. I have to pay rent in a few days and I'll be down to about $600 to my name. Disney ought to hire you as a consultant for the Thief restoration given how much research you've done.

By the way, I made some GIF animations:

Nice GIF animations!

>> I'm still indifferent about the fight scene, but at least it's not that bad when edited down like in the rough cut.

Cut down a LOT more now ... and I'm continuing to work on it.

>> I can't help but laugh at "What, cobbler?" since it's such a horrible Price imitation.

I always thought it was a horrible line cut together from actual Price words. Either way it was never in my cut. =)

EDIT: Actually I'll have to check the cut from six years ago, it might have been in there, but I don't think so.

>> The gag with the Thief being lifted up isn't bad, either, since he really does come off as a hero.

Yeah, despite the horrible animation I thought it was nice to momentarily reward the Thief for his .... er, heroics? at the end.

>> The only problem is that the guards don't seem to be responsive to his horrible stench...

Well, the shot only lasts a few seconds. Leave it a few seconds longer, animated in a Williams style, and you'd get that. =D

>> One thought... I really love is the whole banana leaves flight sequence. The Thief finally finds something he enjoys besides stealing.

I drew this in class today, because...just because, that's why.

I feel like some sort of pathetic otaku. But I show you all, because...you'd get it, that's why.

Anyway. Back to studying for finals.

Looks like I've probably gotten a month's extension here. They couldn't find anyone to replace me, so I'm gonna give 'em the money I've gotten together in the last few days, and was gonna use to move out, for rent .... I need to make some major money this month somehow and be out of here by the end of it.

Very, very nice. The only thing that needs is the music off of the NES game that plays during that scene.

And OCP, congrats on the extension. Nothing like having a roof over your head.

It does have the music. =)

Music which always makes me think of Del Shannon's "Runaway."

The Thief and YTMND aren't completely incompatible ... I mean they both have Sean Connery.

That's weird. Sound worked in IE (bleh), but not Firefox.

BTW, it's not a real good thing to accidentally pop the processor out of your laptop when you're trying to remove the heat sink to clean it. It's a little on the scary side. Damn thing.

Ok, that's just awesome. Both the YTMND and that you don't have to live like the thief.

You know, I just thought of something. If I get the videos of Animating Art and I Drew Roger Rabbit from Tequila Mockingbird, I could do the video reconstructions straight from there. That way, it's one less thing you have to do and I can just send you a disc with my final edits when I'm through.

BTW, here's links to my paper and trailer for the "Thief" presentations...

I'm not 100% happy with either... but the paper does what I needed it to do for a grade and the trailer is what makes my group happy. The best thing is that the trailer is going to be projected onto a large screen with the sound booming through the sound system.

www.ctufilms.com/thiefpaper.doc
www.ctufilms.com/thieftrailersm.mov (the finished video is in full DVD quality)

My main regrets on the paper are not noticing a few other bawdy gags. You pointed out Zig-Zag getting kicked in the crotch by one of the "Femme One-Eyes" and I finally noticed it. Speaking of crotch hits, I wish Calvert didn't cut out the shots of the Nurse kicking a brigand in the crotch and then poking the eyes of another.

Nice trailer. Send me a DVD copy and I'll put it in the collection somewhere.

The "world which we see" cut to the Thief's eyes is genius. The "silent comedy" montage goes on a bit long for my taste, but that's your focus in this presentation, I get it ... few too many Calvert shots I think, and an abrupt end. Otherwise good stuff.

Great work!

On paper - It's spelled "Verschoor."

The Brigand crotch hit was never animated (I think this shot was done by the London team for Calvert) ... I'd forgotten about it til you mentioned it. The eye poke was most certainly animated, but cut out. Censorship, bah.

The Zigzag crotch hit is right there ... it's not actually clear what causes it, some kind of chain reaction from One Eye's fist hitting the women, and maybe them hitting Zigzag. This was a Calvert finish of a Williams scene. London team did it as far as I can tell.

Working on the edit right now.

I'm at the hands which lead to the witch.

Did the big Zigzag/One Eye reveal shot with frame by frame color correction - again - and a large image of One Eye which I cobbled together and have matchmoved and frame by frame color corrected.

This shot is always insanely difficult (and this is the third time I've done it) ... it's almost impossible in fact because the shot was refilmed after the workprint, for Princess and the Cobbler (and the Princess WIP) ... and the Princess shot has completely different lighting, a different background behind One Eye, ravens flying by in different places, different camera movement, all kinds of differences, yet I have to combine it with the workprint shot to make it widescreen .... they're not quite the same shot. It can drive you mad ...

Yeah, it was actually a mistake at first. I moved the shot to the wrong place and it went on the video track over the flyover. Then, I had the idea to turn down opacity and it looked cool. I tried to balance out the comedy, epic, and awe within 2 minutes. Personally, I'd rather just show a few minutes worth of clips in complete form (namely the "Dance of the One-Eyes", the Thief being tossed around by the Nurse, and the staircase chase). Or even better, your trailer. The Calvert stuff is regrettable... but I only used stuff that conformed to storyboards or went by quick enough to not stand out. I hate how all the Calvert work in the tower scene omits every other drawing from the pencil animation (it's all in ones in the workprint, right?). But the general story is there. As for sending you something... I'll probably make a different version that's more complete and balanced overall.

Oh, don't look at the IMDB's quotes section for "Arabian Knight" (they still won't change the name). Some idiot added a bunch of quotes... not just from the altered cut, but all from the Miramax-only voices for the Thief and Phido! Geez.

Coz that is DVCam format and will play my tapes. If anyone in the UK has that at least then they can capture via Firewire into their computers.

Or... REALLY CRAZY IDEA... How much is a 20/30gb hard drive? I could perhaps shift everything onto one drive and send that out? It would be in the Matrox uncompressed AVI format (which DEFINATELY plays in Quicktime and FCP). That's a pretty crazy idea.

(Catching up on posts, this might already have been dealt with) I'm in the UK, and I would be happy to take a HD and burn the contents to DVD. I'd need to find a converter for the Matrox AVI format but I'm sure I can.

BTW Just wanted to say hi, I've been lurking in this thread since the beginning and been greatly enjoying reading the progess you have been making on this movie. Thanks for the sterling work you have done on this Garrett (and everyone else) and I look forward to seeing the movie when its complete (and all those DVD's!). I got here in a roundabout way, your friend Justin sent me a copy of the Star Wars: A New Hope you did, started reading the threads here for the Empire and Jedi cuts.

Hi there Rob!

Justin's a good man ... an old and dear friend. =) I think he's reading this thread occasionally too.

What we really need in the UK is someone with something like a Sony PD-150 camera, something that plays DVCAM.

Patrick - Actually, a lot of the pencil animation was pretty sketchy in the the Zigzag tower stuff ... Dick had only roughed it out, no ones yet. The Calvert stuff is so bad there because they were taking slightly rough material and interpreting it in a really vague way - didn't really know what they were doing.

I go to sleep having edited The Thief's flying shot ... it's nice to be working with better material, where I can make the ideas I had in the rough cut about making shots flow together REALLY work. The bluescreen technique used in this shot works really well now --- it's all seamless.

Oh, ok. Still, I think they cheated on a handful of shots. In the flyover sequence, the first section with the mountains is all on twos. Once the lake appears, it switches to ones up until the close-up of Mighty One-Eye, which is on twos. The wide shot with all the One-Eye's after that is on twos. When it switches back to Mighty One-Eye (in the two finished shots you added back in), it's in ones again.
