Anybody know how i can convert these files so I can use these on Ipods?

I think you'd have to convert them to .mp4, woudln't you?

I think the iPod uses H.264 also.

You might ask this in the How-to/Technical discussions board

I'm having trouble doing this too. Coverting files to MPEG4 for ipod isn't a problem, but how do I rip films from DVD to Avi or some other decent file type without keeping the cahpter markers and stuff? I just want a film in it's entirity as an avi which I can then convert to ipod mpeg4. Any help?

I've heard Handbrake Lite is good for ripping DVD to useable iPod video. I've downloaded the software, but haven't tried it out yet. I was going to do so later tonight with The Big Lebowski.

Cool. Googling for it now...

EDIT A google search has led me to believe that this program looks awesome. However, it seems to be Mac only at the moment

Bummer. Sorry about that. Forgot this was one of our few unfair advantages.

Okay, ran into a bit of a SNAFU. Handbrake Lite does not transfer from DVD direct to iPod ready video. Dunno how to do that now. But I did use the full version of Handbrake to rip a DVD last night. Took four hours. However, when I started watching the resulting MPEG-4 file, it had the director's commentary on it and I couldn't get rid of it. Ironically enough, the MPEG-4 file wouldn't be recognized by Handbrake Lite so I could convert to an iPod-ready file either.

A couple months ago, I tried ripping Red Eye and all it got was one of the special feature documentaries and wouldn't rip anything else.

What's the best way to rip DVDs on Mac? What special steps do I need to take to make it all work? What the hell am I doing wrong? I have no clue how to rip DVDs (Mac or Windows) at all. I just want to put them on my iPod so I can watch on the go. Nothing illegal, I swear.

IN HANDBRAKE YOU WANT TO SELECT ONLY THE MAIN AUDIO OPTION IN LANGUAGE ONE, AND SELECT NONE FOR LANGUAGE TWO. DO NOT SELECT ANY SUBTITLES. UNDER SOURCE YOU SELECT WHICH TITLE YOU WANT. THE TITLE WITH THE LONGEST RUNNING TIME IS MOST ALWAYS THE MAIN FEATURE. UNDER VIDEO KEEP THE FRAMERATE THE SAME AS THE SOURCE, THE ENCODER AS FFMPEG, AND THE TARGET SIZE SHOULD BE 700mb. NOW, YOU JUST CLICK "RIP." ONCE THAT IS FINISHED JUST DRAG THAT VIDEO INTO iTUNES WHERE IT WILL BE PLACED IN YOUR LIBRARY AND IN YOUR VIDEO FOLDER. PLUG IN YOUR iPOD, AND DRAG THE VIDEO INTO THE iPOD FOLDER THAT COMES UP IN iTUNES. IT'S NOT ROCKET SCIENCE GUYS.
