1. Obviously they couldn't use sonar, but some other similar method could be used. An energy burst...tracking a ship's wake in space particles...

2. The idea of a sonar-style device was what I had in mind.

3.I always thought that the comments made in Balance of Terror meant they didn't see each other's ships, but it appears I was misinterpretting.
I have checked a number of sites, and I cannot find anything that says they never saw each other's ships, just that there was no "face-to-face".

While I'm still wary of the whole deal, this is probably the best news about the franchise I've heard in years. It's at least indicative of Paramount's displeasure with him and it's probably safe to say he wouldn't get his paws on a new series in the future.

This certainly sounds like a bad idea and the wrong direction to go with the franchise. However, the quality of movies usually has little to do with their concept and much to do with the execution of it (something studio executives never seem to learn). So I'll reserve judgement. After all, the SW prequels were good.
