This one from the official DVD looks like the blades are intertwined.

Also, I think some are getting "behind" confused. Some are thinking of it in relation to the picture: Vader's sword is behind Luke's in the picture (Luke's is closest to us). Other's are thinking in relation to the events depicted in the pic: Vader's sword is in front of Luke's and he is blocking it from hitting the Emperor (Vader's is closest to the Emperor).

We're all on the same page, just some of us are thinking objectively and others subjectively what "behind" means.
First of all, if the picture shows them as "intertwined", then how can one be in front of or behind the other?

Secondly, the picture shows, at the very least, the core of the red saber (Vader) blocking the green saber (Luke), which means that Luke's is behind Vader's, and is closer to Palps - which means it is on the wrong side. This is what I've been saying all along.

The intertwined one is from the official DVD, which had the sword effects redone. I'd argue that while Vader's shows through (a badly done effect), the majority of the blade is Luke's on the correct side. The pic you posted is ambiguous, at best. I altered the curves on yours and it clearly shows Vader's sword between the Emperor and Luke's sword. I see no error in your pic.

The question is not if Luke's saber is behind vader's. After all Luke swings his saber from upper right down to the left. I think everybody agrees Luke's saber is behind vader's and closest to the emperor. The discussion was if that should be the case. If you think Luke wants to hit the emperor then his saber shouldn't be behind vader's, because vader could not have blocked it. If you believe (as I do) he wants to hit vader then there's nothing wrong.

How can you think he's trying to hit Vader? As Vader's blade clearly shows, Vader himself is not within reach of Luke's strike. Two, it's the Emperor, not Vader, who got Luke pissed off. Three, it's totally out of character since Luke had been spending the whole encounter trying to redeem his father. Why, then, would he immediately go for the kill for no apparent reason? He's obviously going for the Emperor.

Because the emperor says he wants Luke to strike him down (his journey towards the dark side will be compleet). It would be majorly stupid to try and hit him then, wouldn't it? He wants a confrontation with vader as in empire.

EDIT: That's how I see it... But I don't think Luke strikes to try and kill vader. Besides he can't redeem vader by killing the emperor, it would probably have the opposite effect. And there's no need for vader to protect the emperor. I think the emperor could easily deal with luke himself. Blasting him away with lightening or something...

Of course all those things are true, but that's under the assumption that Luke is thinking rationally rather than out of anger. Anger at all the things the Emperor is saying. Angry that his friends are in a trap, and that his fleet is going to be destroyed, and it was the Emperor who set it all up. Meanwhile, Vader's been standing there, practically silent, blending in with the background. Luke's definitely going for the Emperor, and the Emperor knows that Vader will block the shot, thereby finally getting Luke fighting.

This is the one that got it right. Luke came from the right and Vader's blade came from the left and blocked it. Luke was going for the Emperor in the scene. He thought the Emperor was unarmed.

That btw, is exactly how I see it! From the very first time way back when.
