You should be given the penchant of some Supreme Court justices and other federal courts for looking to international precedent nowadays. The Constitution is no longer good enough, it would seem...
I see the people of the world put down their iPods and cellphones long enough to fire-up some protests yesterday. What.......a........surprise. Now all we need a is a music festival to make everyone feel better.
I'm tired of hearing about how the illegal aliens are "...doing the jobs that Americans won't do". This is code for "Works for less than minimum wage". Why are we not focusing on the companies that are violating state and Federal labor laws by paying less than the minimum? Why are these businesses not being fined and employers thrown in jail? Make a public example of some of these people, and the labor market for illegals will dry up.
Until a real return system is created, those illegals who are still in the country will continue to go on the public payroll via "entitlement" programs such as welfare, free healthcare, free education, and receive driver's licenses. They will further depress wages and take jobs from people who play by the rules, and contribute to political and social unrest by refusing to adapt to American culture (Mexican flags, anyone?).
I'm not anti-immigration. I'm anti-ILLEGAL immigration. Something needs to be done about this, and I can see it coming to a head very soon, especially in an election year. More than that, I believe that this is the #1 issue facing America today...more so than the War on Terror. We are sitting next to a bubbling cauldron of seething rage, and it will eventually get knocked over and burn us all.
Mike Reagan had an OpEd piece about immigration that my paper ran last week. He said that the biggest problem with immigration is that because the government of Mexico is so corrpt, it's people can't live free from having to pay bribes and such. Basically if we want the flow of illiegal aliens to stop, we have to be proactive in getting Mexico to remove the corruption from its government.
