Sure, but rock seems to reinvent itself every 12 years or so.

Mid 50's -- rock 'n' roll (Elvis, Buddy Holly, etc)
Late 60's -- psychadelic rock, funk, etc.
Around 1980 -- hair bands, "arena rock"
Early 90's -- grunge
early/mid 00's -- garage (Strokes, White Stripes, Hives, etc.)

It's rough, but I think it comes across.
