As to the temporal smoothing, the reason it caused problems is because after each frame was "smoothed" by comparison with the previous frame, the subsequent "smoothed" frame was used to fix the next one, instead of the original unsmoothed frame. This led to loss of detail and ghosting. In this respect, the non-THX versions actually have a leg up in quality.
