FUEL TO THE MAC vs. PC FIRE — Page 2

Actually your right about their choosing of an audience. Microsoft doesn't really have any good video editing software as good as Apple's. But Macintosh's of the past (maybe not of the future, I don't know personally) did freeze up on occasion. Which just so happens to uh...happen--with iPods also. Maybe a coincidence, but it would be kinda fishy if it was.

And Windows' track record is any better? I challenge you to keep any Windows 9X machine running for six weeks without a reboot. Six weeks of normal usage. It can't be done.

I can't really debate that, the first Windows I ever used was 95. I'm kinda young I guess. But do you mean constantly on for 6 weeks? Or just using casually?

You're probably right is my final response lol. I should do research if I really wanna argue correctly.

Either way. It can be casual use, but you can't restart Windows or reboot the computer for six weeks. It's impossible.

At the same time, only one of my computers is a mac

Apple Computer Inc. on Wednesday unveiled new software that allows Intel-based Macs to run Microsoft Corp.'s Windows XP software.

I WAS ABOUT TO POST THIS AS WELL.

isnt this vertual PC.

yeah vista is going to be too good when ti frist comes out but Microsoft is preparing for the future. already this OS is going to insanely good for laptops. it will run 30% faster on the new AMD power chip, which is huge. overall its going to be interesting but what Microsoft is doing is kinda smart as technology is moving so faster software will go outta date pretty fast, vista will be around for alot long then your average OS, and if you get it, it will require fewer upgrades in the long run.

IT'S NOT VIRTUAL pc. IT WILL ACTUALLY RUN windows xe.

Well it is 8 years out of date!

Win9x's greatest downfall was a lack of protected memory. Once that was introduced in NT it was a whole new ballgame. As I've said b4, I'll put a WinXP Pro/2K Pro machine against any other well-used OS (MAC, Linux) anyday of the week. See my post under Sage's Latest Rant regarding my experiences with Linux to get my take on this.

You have to make a distinction between OS problems and hardware problems. Apple's history with quality control problems goes well beyond the iPod, from exploding laptop batteries to bad logic boards, the list goes on and on. And with Apple, I can't walk down the street to get it fixed. If I want it fixed, it's got to go to the Apple store, or to an authorized repair center (if you can find one). With pcs, parts are readily available at low prices, and the odds of finding someone in your general neighborhood that can fix a pc vs fixing a MAC must be significantly high.

My question is....why doesn't everyone just have a PC? I'm not biased, just look at the facts: PCs are more common anywhere, Macs have had buggy problems since well...forever, 99.9% of all (good) computer games run ONLY on PCs, and the interfaces in Win 95 through XP were more user friendly than the Mac OS.

You must be joking. I mean seriously. Using a PC is like sticking your face through a grinder to get rid of acne. It's painful. Unpleasant. Virus prone. Freeze happy. Overburdened with useless litter. The only reason to use a PC is for games, and/or rare instance of JAVA or other applications which are not Mac combatible in some business settings.

But I came from the PC world. I used both equally from OS 8.6 to OS 9.1. Then OSX came into my life and frankly I've been as happy as ever. All OFFICE software runs on Mac. Adobe CS2 is a dream on Mac. Built on Linux - with easy terminal use, phenomenal network handling, brilliant desktop management and the like. Multitasking across dual monitors is standard. Since completely shedding Classic, I've never seen a crash. Heck, my computer has stayed powered on for months and months and months at a time - multitasking across a dozen high RAM apps without even a blink. I plug and play devices almost without thinking. I do not worry about viruses. I do not fret about spyware. I travel worry free. APPLE OSX is heaven on earth.

No. No. Windows is a god-forsaken creation of the devil meant to enslave the common man in an inferior world. I will never ever ever ever turn away from OSX. Windox MXP111111 could come along with free simulated blows and I still would not be swayed. I feel for the PC user's pain. Many at my office have them. Occassionally, I am forced to watch them clunk around through their desktop like primates, flicking through the task bar in desperation, cursing at "helpers", locking up with the slightest network hang, and I pity them. Oh, I do pity them.

Suggesting getting rid of MACs is like suggesting we get rid of the Ferrari or Porsche and everyone drive Subarus. Insanity.

That speech was almost eloquent enough to sway me to Macs, but you lost me at the very end when you said your co-workers fumble around like primates because you invoked one of my pet peeves, and that is that humans ARE primates, so them fumbling around like primates wouldn't be anything out of the ordinary! Sorry, I know what you meant, but I just can't let that one pass because, like I said, it's one of my huge pet peeves.

Fair enough. I admit to wee bit exaggeration and pun-like social commentary

Why am I reminded of a particular car insurance commercial?

"IF MAN CAME FROM APES THEN WHY ARE THERE STILL APES ??? "

If woman came from man, then why are there still men?

For the record, I love my two Win2K machines. They are on 24/7, and I rarely have to reboot. These are the machines I do my video/DVD work on.

I bought a Power Mac running Tiger in September. Great machine with a great OS.

I've used Win2k and WinXP for years on PCs I built myself. Also great machines with a great OS.

I prefer the OS X interface. It looks nice and it's easy to use. The default XP interface is Fisher Price and looks like ass. I turn it off because I prefer the utilitarian look to bad design.

Windows is snappier and quicker to respond to input. Also seems to run better with less RAM. OS X is a memory and resource hog, and even on a Power Mac it responds slower than I'd like.

Both OS X and XP are patched with similar frequency. Those who say OS X is inherently more stable or less prone to bugs are drinking the Kool-Aid. I've had OS X lock up several times since September. It's not bulletproof.

I see little to no difference when running resource-intensive apps like Photoshop and Dreamweaver.

As a reference, I'm comparing my dual 2.5Ghz Power Mac with Geforce 6800 Ultra and 3.5 gigs of RAM running Tiger with a P4 2.6 with Radeon 9600XT and 1.5 gigs of RAM running XP and Win2k.

Personally, I prefer OS X for day-to-day use and I'll probably stick with Mac when I buy my next machine because the Intel Power Macs will be out by then. I'll dual boot OS X and XP, maybe even Vista. Best of both worlds.

Use what you like. The real-world differences come down to taste/preference and nothing more, unless you're a gamer, in which case I'd definitely recommend XP.

Now if only you could go the other way. I mean, I prefer OSX to XP, but I'm sure many would agree that buying a Mac costs a lot more than buying a PC. If you could run Mac OSX on a PC, then perhaps Apple could get enough people using OSX to convince them to spend the extra cash to buy a mac for their next computer.
