Which ones in particular have struck your fancy as of late?

I really enjoyed reading Son of the Demon and Blind Justice recently.

But right now, I'm hell-bent on getting my hands on Superman Red Son.

I just finished The Long Halloween by Jeph Loeb, which I thought was quite good and draws a lot of it's material from Year One. The City of Crime run in Detective Comics I thought was good as well.

Has anyone read any of the One Year Later titles? I read Detective, Bats, and Green Arrow last night. So far, so good. Gives them a lot of lattitude.

I've read Detective, Outsiders, and Superman, and I'm planning on buying Batman 651 tomorrow with Infinite Crisis 6.

My goodness! I just read The Long Halloween today myself. I must say, it took a while to draw me in, but as a whole, this book just blew me away.

But I did one better today, IMHO. I also read A Superman for All Seasons. One of the greatest comic books I've ever read in my life. No exaggeration. The art was breathtaking, the writing approach brilliant, and the story was just plain great.

Tim Sale - check it out - one of the pest set of two comic book pages I've ever seen/read:

http://superman.ws/superman-comics/about/seasons/sunset.jpg

A quote from Loeb about this spread: For example, we always knew that when Clark left Smallville at the end of the first chapter, Pa Kent was going to be out in the field, and they were going to be looking at a sunset. Tim had drawn two characters in the foreground, a little bit of grass, and a line across the horizon, and sent it in. And of course, I had the audacity to write Clark saying, "Do you ever get tired of looking at that?" and Pa replying, "Nope. Never have, never will." And that was it! When DC saw that, they said, "Where's the rest of the page?" The rest of the page was Bjarne Hansen. It's a wonderful, magical moment, just like Tim knew that it was going to be.

Loeb's choice of inner voices for each season just added so much depth to the story and the characters. If you're a Superman fan, go read it now. I think it's the closest thing to a "Superman: Year One" you can get.

That is weird about Halloween. I too thought the beginning was quite slow, but then it begins to really pick up.

I'll have to pick up the All Seasons one (tack it onto my mile-long list). I have to admit that Dark Knight Returns actually put me off of Superman as a kid. I couldn't stand him for taking sides against Bruce.

Yeah, I used to think that Superman was the dumbest idea for a superhero ever. Then I sort of realised that he was the only superhero - the only one who was intrinsically the embodyment of 'super' - whose alter-ego was Clark Kent, and not the other way around. Then I realised that he was the template for all superheroes that followed him. And then I realised he was one of, if not THE most conceptually rich characters around, for myriad reasons which I have probably gone over before.

COIE is very necessary to understanding the current Infinite Crisis run, and is a critical piece of DC history, but is a little dated by today's standards in terms of dialogue and....naivitae(sp?). I've always felt that the post-crisis DCU took a much more dark and adult turn, and it was for the better. Artwork in that story is fantastic...it's amazing how many panels Perez managed to cram onto some of those pages. It's worth a read on that merit alone. My take: A good read every 10 years or so...that's about it.

That's a cool slogan - "Only One Will Claim the Night". I was five years old when that movie came out. As a huge fan of those awful TV serials, I wanted to see it more than anything. I caught glimpses of what I called the 'black Batman', and I wanted in. But unfortunately my mother would never let me watch it with my friends because she deemed it too dark and violent (she was probably right). She was reasonable, though - she recorded it off TV for me and let me watch it when I was about 9.

Incidentally (or perhaps not-so-incidentally, given my Batman obsession), I rented out and watched Batman Begins. Again. For the 50 gazillionth time. Still good.

On that subject, how are you finding Infinity Crisis so far? I've been reading good reviews ("Must Have" reviews to be exact), but I haven't started reading it yet. I was thinking of waiting for it to come out in TPB.

Infinite Crisis so far has been excellent. It's definitely DC returning to it's roots and they're at the top of their game. What's happening now is that they're publishing "1 Year Later" titles, meaning all their titles are jumping ahead 1 year. Also, after IC is complete (next month) they begin "52" which is a one issue a week, 52 issue long series dealing with the events between the end of IC and 1 Year Later. It's going to be difficult to catch up right now, so you may want to get the TPBs when they hit. However, IMO it's a good idea to begin reading the 1 Year Laters of your favorite books and also at least start buying 52 when it comes out so you're not that far behind. I wish DC would print checklists, like Marvel does. Marvel already released a checklist for Civil War.

Actually, I got a letter published in DC's Ask the Editors this month regarding a chronology (on their site). They gave an answer that may help you in terms of reading order...

I'm glad you approve. For my money, those posters are way cooler than any of todays posters. Todays posters are just so... photoshopped. They don't project anything remotely epic or awe inspiring.

Speaking of Batman Begins, I hear that one of the screenwriters for it, David S. Goyer I believe, is working on a screenplay for a film adaptation of the Flash, and that actor Ryan Reynolds has expressed great interest in the role of the Flash.

Awesome image. And amen to a 'done right' Flash movie. As for Crisis on Infinite Earths, it is an excellent read and has some excellent artwork. Plus it is pretty much essential to understand the past 21 years of DC comics, espeically the Infinite Crisis.

On another note:

SPOILERS

CONNER!! NOOOO!!!!
I guess it wouldn't be a Crisis without a Superchild dying... but still! *sniff*

END SPOILERS

So, what are your thoughts on Infiinted Crisis as of the penultimate issue?

This isn't related to Infinite Crisis but to the Flash movie.

REALLY COOL PIC

But I'm kind of getting tired of superhero movies. Hollywood has a bad way of using fads and personally wearing them out. I mean, yeah Spiderman was great, Fantastic 4 was ok, Hulk sucked, batman begins was pretty good. But when will it end? Elektra was just horrible. I didn't even see it but I mean c'mon, it was sparked by a bad character in another bad movie; Daredevil. How much worse can it get? The Superman movie sounds really cool, but when they start getting into lesser heroes like Daredevil and Flash it kind of gets old.

My thoughts EXACTLY - A bunch of heads photoshopped together. Posters of the 70s and 80s were so much better.

Why is Flash so muscly in that photo? Does the power of super-speed have some effect on his physique? I'm not criticising, just asking - I never read flash, but I am familiar with the origin story and I thought he was just a normal guy who got splashed by some chemicals and became super-fast.

Well, they've never really explained the physique, that's for sure. I know that in the first 10 or 15 issues of the this past Flash run (around 1988 or so) they were careful to explain that his strength was based on the "speed, properly focused, becomes power" concept. An average guy has pretty good strength in his 20's and 30's, and if he can hit you 50 times in a second, then it's all over...

I thought that run was one of the best in comics during that time period. The first 30 issues of that book were fantastic.

I thought 6 was pretty darn good, and I'll be glad to see Superboy Prime finally get a beat down now that the E2 and E1 Superman are both back, as well as Powergirl and Wonderwoman it should be a mop up. Again the art was great and you can really see Perez's influence. Too bad they didn't give Wolfman more to do than Secret Files, but oh well.

Have you noticed Bats "softening" a little in the 1 Year Later titles? He actually compliments Tim about his progress. Was surprised.

Future Flash possibility, Possible Spoiler:

What do you think of Boomerang's kid (who was shown as having super-speed in Identity Crisis) taking on the mantle?

It's just kind of the rule with sueprheroes - they all look body builders and athletes. It's always been that way. Even back in 1938 when comic book art was kinda crude Superman was always drawn to look bigger and buffer and brawnier than the mere mortals who surrounded and/or made the mistake of opposing him. It's the same with a guy who isn't necessarily a strenght oriented character like the Flash or the Green Lantern (any of them). Even Spider-Man, by far one of the smaller heroes, is drawn to look like he hits the weight room regularly.

But with Spidey and Superman it makes sense - I mean, Spider-man's whole body was genetically altered by the spider bite, so it's cool with me that he looks buff and muscly. Superman goes without saying. But yeah, I take your point - it's just a standard comic thing.

So who would you rather be - Batman or Superman?

I like 'em both, but as much as I like Batman, I'd rather be Superman, Kryptonite or no Kryptonite. Supes comes with built in powers, so he doesn't need a large bank account to provide for gadgets, he isn't a traumatized 8 year old trapped in a man's body, and he has a more upbeat outlook on life.
