Coincidence?

I found this over on the Chefelf.com forums and decided to repost it over here:

Which movie am I describing below -- ANH or TPM?

The story starts out with two characters who escape danger aboard a starship. Meanwhile, a girl of high planetary nobility is captured by the bad guys. The two fugitives wind up stranded on a desert planet and through a series of events meet a talented boy who is a native of the planet, along with others who help them with their mission. Together the group eludes the enemy sent to find them and they escape the planet. The girl of nobility is rescued by the protagonists and eventually leads a plan to launch a counterattack against the enemy. The Jedi master of the group is killed by a Sith lord, though not before introducing the boy from the desert planet to the Force. In the climatic end battle sequence, the boy from the desert planet blows up the enemy space station, and we end with a celebration of all the characters looking into the camera.

And which movie am I describing below -- ESB or AOTC?

In the middle episode, a flying hunter droid, sent by the enemy, sets the plot into motion. As a result, the two main heroes get split up early on. One flies his personal fighter on a mission to a mysterious waterlogged planet, accompanied only by his astromech droid, while the other gets to protect the girl, and he and the girl fall in love. There is an asteroid chase, a cool armored bounty hunter, and a big ground battle involving giant walking vehicles. A hero is tormented by troubling visions of someone dear to him being in pain, leading him to travel to another planet to attempt a rescue. The villain reveals a big secret and tries to tempt a hero with a "join me and together we can bring order to the galaxy" speech. The villain also lops off a hero's limb with a lightsaber. And there's a pivotal scene where a tiny old Jedi master demonstrates his amazing command of the Force. It ends with a shot of a hero (his lost limb now replaced with a mechanical one), the girl, and the droids gazing off into an uncertain future.

And again, which movie am I describing below -- ROTJ or ROTS?

The final chapter will open with an elaborate mission led by the heroes to rescue a prominent character. In the process, one of the heroes will show that he is now a very powerful and full-fledged Jedi. After the rescue is successful, the heroes regroup to discuss a multi-fold plan to defeat the enemy, though they are unaware that all of this is proceeding according the design of an evil mastermind. This dastardly scheme, which will give the evil mastermind undisputed control of the galaxy, involves luring his enemies' (the heroes) forces into carefully-laid death traps, and tempting their most powerful member to the dark side of the Force. There follows a battle on a forest planet involving heroes allied with furry natives of the planet, fighting against a technologically superior enemy. Somewhere in the film there is also a massive, awe-inspiring space battle. The evil mastermind's plan unfolds and culminates in a furious and tragic lightsaber battle between two central characters that should instead care greatly for each other. The good character prevails, while the loser's life is profoundly altered in a way that also alters the very course of the galaxy.

The answer to all three questions: Either one.

If you'd rather call all of these similarities "ingenius parallels" rather than rehashes, go right ahead. They are still blatant repetitions of the same themes, scenes, and situations. Now obviously there are some differences as well, but those differences are dwarfed by the similarities. Take the above listed elements OUT of the PT films and there isn't a whole lot left! We've seen all of this stuff before in the OT. It is obvious to me with all of the repetition going on that Lucas had run out of original ideas, but he still had the urge to 'remake' SW using today's technology -- and with the PT he essentially did so. Therefore he has no reason to do it again.

I dunno...I thought it was pretty interesting to read.

Wow, that is pretty awesome/sad/cheapening.

There is no lingerie in space…

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

I have thought of that to... especially when you think of ANH and TPM. On the most part Lucas is just telling the same story but with different characters. I think the main reason he did that is because the old movies were so succesfull, but he didn't have any new ideas and wanted to get a shitload of money and rip us of.

This was deliberately done by Lucas, and each trilogy is suppose to parallel the other. Lucas has stated numerously that he has tried to echo the two trilogies togther, BUT.......................

And this is a huge but. He was unable to achieve for me to care about the characters from the PT anywhere near I did from the OT. So when I watch the PT and all their fates, mostly Anakin paralleled to Lukes is lining up by ROTS, I could care less what happens to him. He makes Anakin so unlikable in AOTC, by the time he is burning in ROTS, I was hoping Kenobi would put him out of his misery. He should have made Anakin AS likable as Luke, but he was a more flawed man than his son, that to me parallels more than taking the easy way out and just making him pout and moan for 2 hours.

Second, he was unable to connect the trilogies visually either. You have one huge CG trilogy filmed in front of bluescreen, with the exception of Tatooine in TPM, which usually looks like one big animated movie with real actors. In the PT, the planets are exotic, and all swooping overhead shots to introduce us to this world.

Then you have the OT where 90% of it was shot on sets or real-life locations where you actually feel like the actors are in the world. Tatooine is shot in Tunisia, Hoth is shot in Switzerland, and Endor is shot in California. The models in the space battles, while may not move as fast or fluidly as CG, look realistic and don't look like one big video game like ROTS space battle does with EVERYTHING going on in the screen.

The third problem is the scope of the story in each trilogy. The OT is about the macro part of SW that centers around these characters, SW '77 is about rebels vs empire, not about Darth Vader vs his kids. The trilogy moves more personal about father/son but never loses that sense of the rebels vs empire as they all celebrate on Endor.

The PT is about Anakin with the macro stuff littered through it. Unfortunately Lucas chose to make this story soley on Anakin, and key things that would marry the trilogies: Expansion of the Clone Wars (Watch the Cartoons), The force Ghost Trick with QuiGon (Read the Book), Padme & Bail creating the rebellion (Watch ROTS deleted scenes) are thrown by the waste side for Anakins story.

So for lovers of the OT, they feel there is too much Anakin in the PT, and it is tough for them to marry the trilogies for that reasons. For lovers of the PT, they feel the OT, and mostly ANH, does not have enough internal Vader, and find that the parts of Luke, Leia, and Han scenes, especially the rescue in Jabbas Palace, tedious because they see it as the story of Vader, not these rebels.

For me they will always be two trilogies, and if Lucas was able to have one linear story, of either Darth Vaders biography, which is thrown out the window by Episode IV, or the story of how a society goes from a democracy to tyranny and back to a democracy is thrown out the window the minute a 10 year old Anakin is placed in Episode I, and totally throws off the whole balance of the OT.

Well there are some coincidences, but you were pretty generic in your descriptions, specially for ROTS - ROTJ, which, apart from a character rescue and an evil masterplan, are not very alike.
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

They are written fairly vaguely, but yeah, remember Lucas calling the saga a big poem with rhyming parts, different characters facing similar situations and confronted with the same choices, etc?

To take things further, ROTJ is a rehash of ANH. Moving onto other films, the last part of Aliens is a rehash of Alien and T2 is a rehash of the Terminator. Same plotpoints and basically even the same scenes. The stakes are just raised.

Um, aren't sequels almost always rehashes of the original? That's what makes ESB so good - it's different.

I'll have to agree with this. As poorly written as the PT was, it was similiar in many ways to the OT in order to emphasize the point that both Anakin and Luke faced a smiliar journey, the destination was just different.

Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here, this is the war room!

I ahve to agree with CO. Had Lucas been able to make us love the PT characters as much as the OT, then the similarities would probably make the whole saga incredibly strong in a Circle of Life sorta way. Instead, we say, "Hey, neat....meh"
