I got it from him on DVD, so if that's what you meant by transfer, the job has been done.

Looks like the trade I've set up for this is going to go through. Apparently the quality is pretty shoddy, though, so be prepared for poop.

I'm not contacting this guy since I don't have anything from his want list, but perhaps someone else has. Just note that it's from 2001.

I got it today. The quality isn't as bad as I was led to believe. These screencaps look pretty bad, but it doesn't look as bad when it's moving:

Put me on a list for this one.

Since you're on my list for my current project anyway. =)

How much of the footage in the workprint is identical to the released version? I mean, you could edit the DVD picture (and the DVD's Viking and Newspaper deleted scenes) over most of this and get something more watchable.

Which I'm doing in a more complicated form with another workprint at the moment.

It's probably possible to do that. I'd like to do it with the newer re-release of the flick rather than the first production of the flick on DVD, which I currently own (in that uneffective Warner Bros-unique cardboard case). I'll probably watch the disc all the way through this week and then I'll be able to judge better. And I'll get a copy to you ASAP, Garrett. I'd rather send it to one other person to PIF (I'd prefer Mask, since he started this thread) because my disc resources are running low.

Netflix can probably make your dreams come true there. =)

Low on discs, I know the feeling. I spend like $200 on DVDs and mailers every few weeks. Which explains why I'm always in financial trouble. Heh.

Yeah, the big saving grace for me is that if I wear down my burner within a year of its manufacturing date, I get a new one free.

Oh, gods, no. Never. Better not to release anything than create such unwatchable and pointless hybrids.

Judging by the caps, the quality is perfectly normal and very watchable for a VHS of a workprint. It looks exactly as I thought it would.

That's not pointless, far from it. Using DVD quality material where possible allows you to see subtleties in the image that are lost in these shitty VHS dubs. It lets you see what the filmmakers saw. A good quality picture with workprint sound is a completely different experience than anything available otherwise, and teaches you a lot.

Pretty much every fan edit I've ever done has been something "pointless" like that. I've never seen a workprint of anything where most of the footage wasn't in the final cut, just with different audio.

In this case, the two most important deleted scenes are already available on DVD, in their original workprint forms, and would integrate perfectly into the film.

Etc etc etc etc etc

I always like "extended" or "composite" cuts as you can tell what has been added by the quality of the scene. I don't mind it at all, I'd rather watch as much of the DVD quality movie as possible and only have to deal with the shoddy quality of most workprints for the added scenes. It's just an easier way of distinguishing what was cut from the workprint without having to watch the whole, poor quality workprint and feel like you're going blind.

In case of any plans of releasing any hybrids, at least release the untouched workprint IN ADDITION to the "composite"... so that one could see the proper workprint and avoid the hybrid then.

I'm not doing anything with this thing in terms "release". I'm sending a copy to Mask and Garrett and that's it. Whoever wants to make a composite or author this with better menus or whatever, be my guest.

So I'm finally getting around to watching this due to my bout with insomnia at the moment. I'm through the first half hour and I can already tell you that a composite job is going to be hard for a number of reasons.

The flick is approximately 13mins longer in this incarnation. So far, aside from the viking opening, there have been two scenes that were totally cut from the final film. Mostly, though, there have just been extra bits of dialogue here and there, which is one thing that would make a composite difficult. Also, some of the effects work is completed and some is not. So far, the bits that have not been completed are quite amusing.

The other thing that would make a composite tricky is use of different dialogue takes and the temp score. For example, Stanley's line "Aren't you due back in the labratory to get your bolts tightened?" is delivered with much less force in this take. A lot of the score is entirely inappropriate for the material. Unless I've missed my guess (and I don't think I have), most of it is Danny Elfman.

I also thought I might point out that the version I have really does not look that bad when in motion. I don't know why this is touted as being one of the most notoriously bad-quality workprints around, I've seen much, much worse.

We've got much worse in the Roger Rabbit thread right now.

I'll point out that temp score is no problem - you never use the sound from the final cut when doing this kind of thing. Just the picture.

Alternate takes, yeah, that's annoying when they're similar. A good example is the Dr. Evazan scene in Deleted Magic. All alternate takes, so very little of it is color.

Still, a composite cut is great because not only can you see as much as possible of it clearly, watching it you know exactly what's different. =) You become a scholar even when you're not paying attention.

Anyway, excited to see this.

Well, that's one more reason for just transferring the pure untouched workprint rather than slaughtering it...

The only reason I'm being able to see all the minor, minor changes in this is because I watched it so many times as a kid, it's engrained in my head.

And I was right, a good bit of it was Danny Elfman. Imagine the "Beetlejuice" theme playing when the Mask goes "It's TIIIIIIIIIME for an overhaul!" And then Jim Carrey does a couple spins for the lack of CG spinning.

Maybe a composite would be a good idea and very possible if one just straight used the audio from the workprint, which isn't that bad. It also seems like they may have shot it to be R-rated, two instances of the word "fuck".

DORIAN: I'm gonna take you apart, piece by piece.
STANLEY: I hope you enjoy your vistory with ONE FUCKIN' EYE!
