Yeah, fair enough. As a whole though, Great Britain is far from Great anymore.

BTW Ric, if a person was earning the brazillian minimum wage, would they still be able to survive? And at what level of comfort? What I mean is, are the salaries equivalent to the cost of living (and by living, I don't mean buying an X-Box). I was on the UK minimum wage at one point (when I finished uni), and I had to move in with my parents because I could not pay my rent and still afford to eat food and pay utility bills - I could afford the rent, but lights, running water, and food were not happening. However, I do not fall into any benefit categories and therefore could not get (and did not want) help from the government. Luckily my parents saved the day and now I have a proper job.

The sad part is, there are a number of people earning that much. People who work as marketing phone attendants earn that much, and if you are not happy about it, you're fired. I have no idea how these people can afford a living. Some of them live with other people who can generate more income, others have to live with R$300.00 to mantain their family. Those people live in slums, usually in poorly built houses, with no proper healthcare or feeding...

That's really sad man. These guys (and girls) are trying to earn a living and be useful to society (ie, they are not begging or stealing, they are actually trying) and yet they are still ahving a totally crap life. No justice.

I think it's fair to say that Brazil beats England in the social/economical crapness stakes. As a country that is supposedly advanced and wealthy, England is on a downward spiral, but I know I don't really have anything real to complain about.

Harry Potter 4 DVD UK: £14.99 = US$26.08
Big Mac Meal from McDonalds UK: £3.18 = US$5.53
X-Box 360 with Ghost Recon and memory card UK: £259.99 = US$452.38
Large Meat Feast Pizza from Pizza Hut UK: £12.99 = US$22.60
1 litre of Tropicana Orange Juice UK: £1.69 = US$2.94
1 litre of petrol UK: £0.95 = US$1.65

That's not much worse than over here (in the U.S.). A gallon of gasoline over here is even more expensive than over there, though. I believe it's about $2.50 a gallon where I live right now.

I think a Big Mac meal would only be about $5 here, though.

Whoa, whoops! Lack of calculation on my part. I knew a liter was less than a gallon, but I didn't know it was THAT much.....

Dude, you guys are getting ripped off big time! Twenty pounds for a UMD movie? They tend to run under 20 DOLLARS in the states. "Bill and Ted" cost me only $14.54 plus tax.

Well, as for electronics, things are cheaper in the US.

Electronics-wise, everything outside of the US and Japan is a rip-off.

Everything is cheaper in America.

To be fair, the pound is much stronger than the dollar, so to do a straight pound to dollar conversion doesn't really tell the whole story, but I know for a fact that wages compared to the cost of things is much better in America. Like I said, we in England get ripped off badly. And like I also said, a lot of it is tax.

I'm looking forward to living in America. I have a few thousand pounds saved which will basically double when I change it to dollars.

In order to properly evaluate the strenght of a country's currency, you should not just compare it to dollars, there are some stuff to be taken into consideration: what is the minimal wage, what is the medium wage, how much taxes are into the products, how much taxes people pay, what are the services provided by the government, such as health care and education, the costs of living... Like, from what I've seen, the costs of housing in America are waaaaaay more expensive than here. You gotta take all that and see how much the average person can afford on a day to day basis, how is his standart of living.

YOU'RE GOING TO FIND THAT WAGES AND COST OF LIVING VARY FROM ONE STATE TO ANOTHER IN THE U.S. NEW YORK AND CALIFORNIA ARE TWO OF THE MOST EXPENSIVE PLACES TO LIVE IN THE STATES. IN CHICAGO, IL. IT CAN COST YOU MORE THAN $400.00 A MONTH JUST TO PARK YOUR CAR. IN LEWISVILLE, TX. (A SUBURB OF DALLAS) A TWP BEDROOM APARTMENT WILL RUN YOU $1,100.00 A MONTH, AND THAT'S IN A SEMI-BAD AREA OF THE CITY. DON'T GET ME STARTED ON THE PRICES OF A PLACE IN DALLAS.

BTW Dayv, I will be living in L.A, and I'm aware that it is more expensive than most places (and also apparently more dangerous, but I'm a born and bred Londoner and I'm pretty sure I can handle it). My wife is from North Dakota and the cost of living there is very low. Somebody from London could sell their home, take the money and move to North Dakota and live like a king.

Let's try to compare housing costs. I'm currently living in a neat 2 bedroom apartment with a living room, bathroom and kitchen, plus a little extra area, and I'm paying US$190.00/month rent, which also includes water costs. I've heard that the same apartment in the US would cost much more...

I'm paying £605 ($1058) a month for a nice 1 bedroom apartment with bathroom, kitchen and living room. But my landlords are a nice elderly couple who don't rip people off, so the same apartment would normally cost much more. When I tell my friends how much my rent is they are very jealous. Bear in mind that I earn about £1200 (after tax) a month, half my salary goes on rent. Abd that is before bills, and the gayest of gay taxes, the council tax (which pays for the garbage man, etc, and costs over £100 a month on top of my rent and MUST be paid by law).

But the short answer is £605 ($1058) per month.

Yeah, I've been to ND more times than I ever ever thought I would, and I will be there again in one month and one day.

Which means I need to know the answers to the following 2 questions:

1. Will any TV channels in the USA be showing the World Cup? (soccer) How can I find out?
2. Can I legally bet on sporting events in the USA?

I know that for the 1994 World Cup, they have aired some games, mostly USA's. I don't belive the general north american audience even knows how a soccer game is played, let alone know what a World Cup is, so I strongly belive that you'll either watch it on cable, or in a ethnic pub or restaurant. I know that in New York, Brazil-themes places will show the games. With some luck you might find an italian or portuguese or brazillian place that shows the games.
