You are probably thinking of Lynnard Skynnard. They were a southern rock band, most famous for the song 'Sweet Home Alabama'. The story of their death is the stuff of legends. Even today people discuss such pressing matters as whether the lead singer was killed by the crash itself or was already dead on impact from the VCR that became dislodged as the plane went down and crushed his skull.
