How would you intercut the music and the special effects sounds so they make sense once you cut that scene up?
Author
Time
Well you'd have to strip and replace all the audio from the shots. They're from all over ESB so there'd be no real sound continuity otherwise.

Where is that shot used in RotJ?

Mask, I think the strongest urge is to fix TPM and ROTJ, because they are they weakest of all six films. Personally, I think they should not be done in any order but all at the same time (I'm sure that's easy for someone who's not actually working on the project to say). Regardless of the order, I think it's important to try to flesh out the details in all the movies as soon as possible.

And Mangrove,

Those shots look pretty good. I'm not sure how hard it would be to do all that rotoscoping when you've got one thing flying in front of another though. Is tjdavis the rotoscoping guy?

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

Commander Courage:
A pan down to Dagobah might be exactly what you need for an opening shot. Maybe you guys will hate this, but I’m thinking of ROTJ in a similar way to Return Of The King. ROTK had a very interesting opening shot to say the least: a worm? A very quiet opening scene…just like the Dagobah scene would be…I’m not married to the idea, though…

Oh, another crazy idea for ROTJ:
Have a similar end credits sequence like ROTK where all the main cast members have their name and a still image. Know what I’m talkin’ ‘bout? The only thing is it would be hard to credit certain characters like Darth Vader because so many people played him.
Somethin’ to chew on…

"I think it's important to try to flesh out the details in all the movies as soon as possible. "

I agree with that, as you could always want changes.

For me, I really think AOTC and ROTS need the most changes.

ROTS is extremly fast paced, too fast to even enjoy it. And AOTC, I cant wait to hear the ideas on how to fix that, as the fireplace scene and any scene with Padme and Anakin just make me want to cringe, uy.

Actually AOTC is already being worked on under the Shroud of the Darkside title. It has its own seperate thread.

A great alternate opening for the original ESB would have been a pan down to the fleet of Star Destroyers, with the Super Star Destroyer flying in overhead. I think if we had that shot with a Death Star in there, that would be perfect for our edit of ESB.

Yes, this might be answer. Mangrove's great pictures (thanks for those) would come into play not in RotJ, but in ESB. Instead of cutting-and-pasting the entire opening from RotJ to ESB, we's used this kind of altered opening to ESB, moving the big fleet scene to there, and inserting the Death Star in the background. Then we see Vader's shuttle heading towards the Death Star (as per Mangove's picture) with the following scene of him and Jejerrod. This would establish the fleet is stationed around the Death Star, which makes sense. Also with this maybe we wouldn't have to add the shot of Vader's shuttle flying back to the Executor, and leave him on the bridge as per the original version. It could be assumed Vader would be going back and forth from the DSII to the Executor, as he does in RotJ.

Then we get to RotJ, leaving the opening of that as-is for the most part (because Palpatine wouldn't travel to the DSII in the Executor, which is Vader's Star Destroyer). The only difference is it would continue onto Emperor's arrival instead of Vader's arrival. The transition from the shuttle in space to the shuttle in the hangar will be tricky though; there are no shots of the Emperor's shuttle LANDING, it's just sitting in the hangar. So a cutaway will be necessary, but all the bits with the officers will have to be in ESB. I'll experiment with this stuff and see what I can come up with.

Btw, although I'm not the offical editor on this project, I have been experimenting with a lot of scenes I'd like to share on this thread. The problem is the files are HUGE. I'm currently using Womble, and was wondering if anyone knew how to compress the files or save them at a lower resolution (so I could upload them to the web). There is probably an obvious answer to this I'm overlooking, and I'm sure I could figure it out eventually, but I figured someone here would be in-the-know.

As for the chronology of the project, Erik is correct in that it's best to work on all the films at once (to an extent). While at the moment we are physically working on Episode I, conceptual work on all the films is ongoing, and in fact that is the purpose of this thread. It was pretty dead in here for a while, but hopefully this kind of discussion can be ongoing, regardless of which film is being worked on at the time.

Upload them in virtual dub and export them as an Xvid. This may shrink the file size but I am not sure. It is worth a try.

And AOTC, I cant wait to hear the ideas on how to fix that, as the fireplace scene and any scene with Padme and Anakin just make me want to cringe, uy.

A really tough problem to fix, but the dubbing of Anakin has resulted in a lot of really good dialogue scenes that were butchered in the original. The only problem is that I wasn't able to redub Padme, whose delivery some consider to be even worse than Anakin's. Anyhow, get ready for something very radical on Ep. II. It's certainly taking long enough, so I hope that the time involved will be reflected in the final product, and that it will be a nice surprise for everyone this year. Because it IS coming out this year That' a definite.

Also, nice work on those screenshots for Empire and ROTJ. I'm not certain that this is the direction you're going (but perhaps I'll try it eventually if you don't), but I would love to see a version of ROTJ with the changes that CC outlined...that is compatible with the original versions of SW and Empire. You could consider ROTJ as the point that Lucas started to lose his touch with Star Wars, and therefore it needed editing to bring it UP to the level of SW and Empire. Do you see what I'm saying? Rather than having it dependent on a recut version of the classics, maybe there could be a self-contained re-edit of ROTJ. Just a thought for the future!

Also, there was some discussion about updating the computer readouts in SW to match the prequels. I would encourage you not to do that, because I'm trying my best to "age" the computer readouts in SOTDS. Actually, if anyone else wanted to create a couple new shots of 70's technology type of computer readouts, that would be even better. Only a couple (the readout in Jango's ship, for instance) would need to be redone. I'm not sure if anyone has the capability to do that, though.

Good luck, guys!

I edited together a sequence with RotJ opening with Palpatine's arrival and it doesn't look like it's going to work. Not only would it be very repetitive of ESB's new opening, it doesn't flow quite right from then on. On a positive note, I think the flow of the Jabba scenes staring out with Boush and Jabba might work with the right subtitles. C-3PO would have to be painted out of a few shots that can't just be cut; that wouldn't be easy. So looking at everything, there are several ways to edit the beginning of Rotj:

-Dagobah: Yoda's Death
-Dagobah: Luke/Obi-Wan
-DSII: Emperor's Arrival
-Tatooine: Droids through Escape (original flow)
-DSII: "Move the fleet to the far side of Endor."
-Rebel Fleet
(Original flow from then on)

OR

-Dagobah: Yoda's Death
-Dagobah: Luke/Obi-Wan
-DSII: Emperor's Arrival
-Tattoine: Musical, Boush, Han de-thawed, Han and Leia captured
-Tatooine: Droids, Captured
-Tatooine: Luke arrives through escape (original flow)
-DSII: "Move the fleet to the far side of Endor."
-Rebel Fleet
(Original flow from then on)

OR

-Dagobah: Yoda's Death
-Tattoine: Musical, Boush, Han de-thawed, Han and Leia captured
-Dagobah: Luke/Obi-Wan
-DSII: Emperor's Arrival
-Tatooine: Droids, Captured
-Tatooine: Luke arrives through escape (original flow)
-DSII: "Move the fleet to the far side of Endor."
-Rebel Fleet
(Original flow from then on)

OR

-Tattoine: Musical, Boush, Han de-thawed, Han and Leia captured
-Dagobah: Yoda's Death
-Dagobah: Luke/Obi-Wan
-DSII: Emperor's Arrival
-Tatooine: Droids, Captured
-Tatooine: Luke arrives through escape (original flow)
-DSII: "Move the fleet to the far side of Endor."
-Rebel Fleet
(Original flow from then on)

The first one would be the easiest obviously, and what we would do if we couldn't figure out a way to make the more complicated Tatooine resequencing work. Of all the complicated scenarios, the second would be my preferance. Feedback?

CC,

I like options 1 and 2. With those, we're keeping the same stuff together, if you get my meaning. 3 and 4 have too much jumping around. Option 1 is actually my favorite, as I think it's important to have the droids walk us up to jabba's palace so we know where we are.

As far as the new opening of ESB, I wouldn't assume anything yet. We haven't heard InfoDroid's opinion on the matter. And what exactly is the problem with the flow if the Emperor arrives in the beginning?

Did you ever get any ideas on how to explain Luke's absence during the rebel briefing?

I was thinking sense Anakin was the chosen one, shouldn't he have a special lightsaber color. Different than the other Jedi but still in the blue and green range. Possibly a darker blue or teal. I don't know how easy that would be cuz I've never rotoscoped a lightsaber (and don't plan on ever doing that hahah)

I agree with you, Erik. 1 and 2 are my favorites as well. The purpose of 2 would be to make sense of the rather nonsensical plan of Han's rescue.

And you're right, the opening of ESB is not set in stone. I think we can both agree that opening both ESB and RotJ with arrivals at the Death Star would be repetitive, so it's either one or the other. And as I mentioned before, there is no landing shot of Palpatine's shuttle. The original shot of his arrival is a squadron of TIE Fighters flying by the hangar, cutting to the shuttle sitting in the hangar full of troops. So the transition from the shuttle flying in space to the shuttle in the hangar would be too jarring. Even taking a shot of the shuttle flying IN the hangar from Vader's arrival doesn't seem to work. Also, I really think an Emperor scene would be most effective after Obi-Wan's final line, "...they could be made to serve the Emperor." That would have to be either this scene, or his second scene referening the fleet (which it wouldbe way too early for IMO).

Moving Luke's arrival to the beginning of the Rebel briefing works, with him hugging Leia then cutting to Han talking to Lando. There is then the problem of Luke not BEING at the meeting, and "I'm with you too." I'm not sure how to deal with that. One crazy idea I had would be for Luke to go BACK to Dagobah after Han's rescue and talking to Obi-Wan. Then would come the Emperor's second Death Star scene, followed by the Rebel Fleet scene and the movie would continue on from there. But I suppose that wouldn't make a lot of sense, would it?

I hate to tell everyone this but I can no longer work on this project. I'm afraid real life has gotten in the way and I don't see it changing anytime soon. I wish you all well and thank you for the support that was given.

I've got a bad feeling about this.

And the musical. Do we really need the musical? It doesn't do anything for the plot.

Sorry you're not going to be able to continue here, tj. Thanks for the work you've done already! Good luck!

If there's going to be a musical number then I would assume we would be restoring Lapti Nek, right? I figure (no matter what you're using) you transition from the scene preceding it, then maybe use one of the establishing shots of Jabba's Palace (perhaps paint the droids out of one of the early shots if that's possible), and then from the establishing shot you maybe could do a cut or a wipe to the original "Lapti Nek" scene. I think it would serve a purpose to have it: without the original opening, there is no setup for what's happening. It seems to me it would be a smoother introduction to the Jabba sequence than just cutting straight to Boush's entrance.

Sorry if I'm missing something, but why would Luke go to Dagaobah first? Rescuing Han should be his first priority. In fact, Irvin Kershner felt strongly that Luke should go with Lando and Chewie at the end of Empire, and settled for the line about "meeting at the rendezvous". Plus, Luke doesn't know that Yoda's going to tell him "no more training etc.", he thinks he's going for more training. They wouldn't rescue Han without him, and they can't wait for Luke to finish training. Every day is a day that Jabba might get bored and kill Han.

^I agree with this.

I also feel that Lapti Nek should be kept in. It is not as jarring as the awful Jedi Rocks (Lapti Nek is more like background decoration) and I actually think it helps add to the Jabba scene by showing th sort of thing that goes on in there (parties, entertainers, slave dancers, etc).

Unfortunately, I'm also going to have to drop a bombshell and announce my departure from this project. I'm sorry this is so sudden.

Many things have changed in the last few weeks and this is going to be an extremely busy year for me. I can no longer devote the amount of time necessary for continuing work on this project.

This deeply saddens me because I believe in this edit, I have from day one. And I still believe it can be great. We've all poured our hearts into it over the last several months and we have built a great framework for an improved Episode I. That's why I hope Commander Courage or whoever else will take charge of the Ranch and push on and finish it. Maybe some of you can help out.

If not, then...we tried. Something to file in the "maybe some day" category.

But I hope you guys finish it.

My apologies to Trooperman that I did not follow through with what I promised you...but...life happens. You know?

I have every confidence that "Shroud of the Dark Side" will be very successful.

I wish the very best of luck to my friends: TM, TJ, CC, MTH, DP, Erikstormtrooper and MusicMan.... You're all extremely talented and goodhearted people. It's been a great time working with all of you.

And to the rest of you...your help has been greatly appreciated. I hope you are rewarded one day with a really kick-ass edit.

MTFBWY....always....

Sincerely,

InfoDroid

Where do we go from here? Who from the original team is left?

Under the circumstances, I will be taking over Starkiller Ranch.

Can I handle this project? Yes, but I will need your help. I have the commitment, the drive, and the time to be sure. I am a novice editor, but I'm coming along well. I now have an external hardrive which makes disc space no longer a problem for me. I'm currently using Womble, but am "in the market" for first class editing software. Any input on what program(s) to get would be greatly appreciated.

Audio mixing is a key area where I will need help. Perhaps Musicman can step up and take over this department of the Ranch.

Special Effects is an area where we now have nothing. I've made various inquaries about this in the past to but to no response. This aspect of the project is ESSENTIAL, so if you or anyone you know or could contact would be willing to contribute, it would make all the difference.

This is a team effort, but at the same time everything cannot be up for committee, and excecutive decisions will have to be made. I am confident in my ability to "run" Starkiller Ranch, but your assistance will be essential to the completion of this project.

Thank You,
Commander Courage

Yeah, I would just like to add to what CC has already said. We have been coming up with MANY great ideas to edit all six of the films into a connecting saga, as we have discussed. We are dedicated to finishing this thing to the end and will continue with our plan of finishing ep.1. We are going to need the f/x shots that TJ has worked on as well as the musical cues that Info droid has worked on. However, fear not, we are going to keep working on this thing.....it is our desire to see these movies in a fashion that the fans would be pleased with , as well as ourselves. Consider this a rebirth of the line-up and a chance to analyze all the details needed to complete the project. But CC is going to take command and deal with the editting aspect of the project, and I thank him for that. Although this will only slow down the process a bit, it is NOT the end and these edits WILL be completed. We may continue with the discussion....

Don't worry, these edits will knock your socks off when their done.
