Ambition outstrips editing capabilities here, and some of those ideas
ultimately prove unnecessary for doing what it is he's trying to do. They mostly call attention
to themselves instead of propelling the story along. I can HEAR the editor going "This is
how it SHOULD have been done" instead of just doing it. Plus, in this film, ADM's "Straight Cut"
style tends to hinder him more than it helps. But he gets much better at it as he goes on. Name of Film and Editor:
ADM's Episode IIDivide by 5 to get the Final Score: 82
Additional Comments:
The best of his prequel edits. The ideas aren't anywhere near as intrusive,
and the execution seriously DOES make the movie flow better in the middle. I liked it about as
much as the IMAX edit, which I also felt improved the film. This is better, to me, than MagFan's
"Clone Wars" edit, which suffers from a LOT of the problems both the Episode I edit and CBB's
Matrix Edit suffers. Name of Film and Editor:
ADM's Episode IIIDivide by 5 to get the Final Score: 74
Additional Comments:
Good ideas muffed by sort of forcing them into the film instead of just
discarding them if they couldn't fit naturally. And some of the reinsertions didn't really
fit naturally. Good transitions, however, he mostly nailed those. But the film does NOT work
better, for me, with this stuff put back in--especially the reinsertion of the "Birth of The
Rebellion" scenes. And this is the movie that makes his choice to delete all references to
Padme being a Senator feel like a REALLY BAD choice. Some sketchy audio edits here. Name of Film and Editor:
ADM's Episode IVDivide by 5 to get the Final Score: 86
Additional Comments:
Maybe not as good as the Darth Editous edit, but almost there. A lot of
similarities there, both in ideas and execution, and that's not a bad thing.Name of Film and Editor:
ADM's Episode VDivide by 5 to get the Final Score: 88
Additional Comments:
Damn near perfect on the edit side. Probably ADM's best edit, in my
mind, although the quality of the original film might have something to do with it, too. Good
concepts, good execution, a lot of nice trims that tidy the film up lovely. Name of Film and Editor:
ADM's Episode VIDivide by 5 to get the Final Score: 74
Additional Comments:
Again, the ambition outstrips the editing capabilities. Good ideas,
iffy implementation in some instances. The movie wasn't paced the greatest in the first
place, but some things that were meant to make it move smoother just stutter it up even
more. Name of Film and Editor:
ADM's HannibalDivide by 5 to get the Final Score: 88
Additional Comments:
Really damned good edit, pretty seamlessly re-integrating the footage
and making it look like it was always supposed to be there. Maybe not the most innovative
but the seamlessness makes up for that. And the Menu is great. probably the best menu in the
contest.Name of Film and Editor:
ADM's Pearl HarborDivide by 5 to get the Final Score: 78
Additional Comments:
Editing is pretty seamless, probably the best editing actually seen in the
contest, the problem is this: The movie becomes even MORE of a headache this way. Sure, the
plot sucked, and the acting in that secondary plot sucked, but those scenes provided a necessary
buffer between Bay's overdriven action style. With those gone, not only does the movie make
less sense, but it destroys some of the tenuous connections that provided even ANY reason to
remotely care about the characters. It ends up being nothing but an action reel spiked with
nonsensical scenes. It's at best a large step sideways. It's shorter, at least, but it FEELS
just as long. Can't polish a turd--but it's a lot of pretty polish here anyway. Name of Film and Editor:
CBB's Matrix DeZionizedDivide by 5 to get the Final Score: 65
Additional Comments:
This was HIGHLY disappointing. From forcing their title into the opening
titles and the name of their group into the credits as well with annoying, poorly done graphics
sequences, I knew this was going to be a rough ride with an edit more concerned with calling
attention to itself than actually trying to reshape the movie. Much like ADM's Pearl Harbor,
it's an idea that SOUNDS good but in execution, you realize how problematic it is to get rid
of THAT MUCH connective tissue. It ends up being a succession of repetitive action sequences,
which really should have fallen under the knife as well. And the worst crime--not axing ANY
of Trinity's death scene. How you re-edit this movie and leave that 5 minutes intact is beyond
me. The pic and sound quality was subpar, as well. Overcompressed and blocky more than a few
times. Most of the editing choices here are poor ones. Even taking into account this was one
of their early attempts, It's still not very good. More focused on flash. Which explains why
the extras are as plentiful as they are (although the trailers aren't good, either) Name of Film and Editor:
CBB's BoogeymanDivide by 5 to get the Final Score: 75
Additional Comments:
Again with the over-compressed and un-anamorphic video and subpar sound. Of
course, the turd they're trying to polish wasn't the best DVD in the first place, but again
for having problems with bad effects, they have no problem adding their own subpar effects
trumpeting their name as opposed to just trying to make the movie better. The whole thing
as with "DeZionizeD" ends up being more an exercise in fanboy pandering and self-promotion
and less an actual effort at making the movie better through creative editing. This one
DOES feature the best editing of the three CBB entries in this contest, but in the face
of ADM's entries, this stuff is pretty amateurish. It feels like it's made by people more
interested in seeing their names in the credits of ANYTHING than by people who enjoy film
and filmmaking. Name of Film and Editor:
CBB's High TensionDivide by 5 to get the Final Score: 56
Additional Comments:
Better video, better audio, looks like better compression, and they tricked
it out something nicely with all the audio options, the trailers, trailershow, deleted scenes,
and a pretty damn cool menu set-up. Unfortunately, this barely counts as a fan edit, since the
whole idea is just to lop off the stupid plot twist at the end. So they do. Not much skill or
innovation in that. Plus I found the re-done opening credits (as in the last two) to be pretty
damned tacky. If the point is to make the movie better don't spend so much time trying to
hype your own name and spend that time, instead, thinking of and implementing better edit choices. Name of Film and Editor:
Greencapt's Batman: De-AssifiedDivide by 5 to get the Final Score: 72
Additional Comments:
Sorta like the DeZionized project--a fun idea, and I gotta give him credit
for even TRYING to fix the unfixable. But, yeah..it's unfixable. Good effort, but the movie
STILL doesn't work, and the edits at times REALLY call attention to themselves instead of being
as seamless as they could be. Not to knock Capt's editing skill--there are some sequences in here
that blend VERY smoothly, and he juggles audio AND video cutting simultaneously rather well,
but in the end--it's still a jumbled mess of crap. It's just a shorter one. Name of Film and Editor:
Rev Beastly's Willard: Ratman CutDivide by 5 to get the Final Score:80
Additional Comments:
Nice, workmanlike, straightforward edit. Closer to ADM than to the CBB
group, which is more to my liking. The edits are seamless, but since all he's doing is trying
to get the thing back to the workprint, it's not especially innovative. But even if it's a quick
down and dirty edit, it does what it's supposed to do and does it efficiently. No glaring
problems, nice picture and nice sound, and reinsertion of scenes that DO make the movie a
little bit better. Not MUCH (it wasn't THAT good) but it does improve it, and not too many
edits in this contest can actually SAY that. Name of Film and Editor:
Movie Rebel's T2: Cyberdyne CutDivide by 5 to get the Final Score: 71
Additional Comments:
Seems like a lot of work for a movie that's not all that much
different from the 2 different extended cuts already on the disc. On top of that--it's
not anamorphic, and the picture is pretty compressed. Probably to take advantage of the
deleted scenes they were going to cut back in, along with the footage from the teaser trailer
That said, the edits are decent enough, they don't call THAT much attention to themselves
(There's a couple, though) and the audio is well done. So there you go. Fun was had by all. I don't know if any other judges will post their cards, but that's how I had it. CBB was utterly disappointing. Yeah, they put a lot of work in, but quality has to count for something. I can spend 5 months crapping on a canvas, that's hard work too--doesn't mean that the work was worth anything other than a crap
This is by far the most popular edit besides the Phantom Edit.
