Dell to Acquire Alienware

Alienware’s least expensive laptops and desktops start at around $700, but the top-of-the-line, liquid-cooled ALX models can approach $10,000 when fully tricked out with dual-core processors, hard drives that can store up to a terabyte of data, and state-of-the-art graphics cards.

Man, Id love a $10,000 pc. Just imagine how good solitaire would be on that

Amalgamation is bad in this respect. All the more reason to go Mac.

Here's a pic of one of Alienware's "mid-priced" computers. Only $6,400.00

Did I mention this puppy has 4 liquid-cooled GeForce GPUs and dual-core AMD Athlon 64 processors?

This is specifically why I'm moving to consoles. With pcs you're caught in a perpetual upgrade cycle. With a smaller investment I can play many of the same games and even some not available on pc without breaking the bank. I'd rather build one myself for $700. Can people REALLY see the difference in pixels displayed at 1024x768 on a machine with 4 GPU's vs a machine with a seperate AGP card? Not to mention the pc gaming market is shaky at best over the mid-long term.

Apple needs to get over itself. The image of being all for the starving artist/little guy is getting old considering they're charging $200 for even a low-level iPod (Shuffle doesn't count). Stevie's a looooong way from the garage with Woz.

Actually, it's 2. But even that can't hold near all the songs on my computer - over half of it would be filled by my Beatles collection alone.

My point is that they're full of crap...if they're so benevolent they should go true open-source and cut prices on their products. I'd love to get an iMac for my kids, but not for $1300 when I can build them a good WinTel machine for 1/2 that.

Their stuff isn't THAT good, either. Exploding battery anyone? They've got a history of quality control problems and let's face it it's not like Apple experts can be found on every street corner. My friend bought an Apple notebook last year, and within 2 months there was a problem with the system board. When he called the Apple Store to get help he got "Bring it back in. It'll be two weeks".

I'LL NEVER OWN A pc AGAIN. I WORKED AS A COMPUTER PROGRAMMER FOR TWO YEARS ON A pc. I HAD A PC FOR SEVERAL YEARS THAT GAVE ME NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS. I BOUGHT MY FIRST MAC FOUR YEARS AGO, AND I'LL NEVER HAVE ANYTHING OTHER THAN A MAC.

My tax return came in yesterday, and the dilemma begins: to buy a mac mini on clearance, or pay bills?

I use primarily PC, but during high school, I had an online journalism class which had nothing but macs, so I had to use them when I did work for that class.

I had nothing but problems from those macs. I also heard a story from another teeacher about a mac that sickened me.

His granddaughter had a mac and one particular game that she loved to play. The mac was getting old, so it got replaced. The game didn't work with THAT mac. They ended up having to download an emulator for the old mac to run on the new mac. In the end, this game ran slower on the new (faster mac) than it did on the old mac.

I'm sorry, but I'm still playing the 1994 classic Sim City 2000 on my 2006 Alienware PC. No emulators.

Yeah, but try playing anything pre-1994 on a current PC. Problems like this are not exclusive to the Mac domain.

I have to agree with something Sage said earlier; the PC market may have some amazing exclusive games, but you have to be moderatly wealthy to even keep up with the technology. On a PC, even if your system specs TECHNICALLY meet the requirements of a game, there could still be fifty thousand things go wrong. My computer at home has a very good graphics card, but I can't run Call of Duty two. Why? I HAVE NO IDEA. It's powerful enough; the only discrepencie is that it isn't the RIGHT BRAND NAME.

If they can program a game to run only if you shell out 150 for a brand name GPU, then screw them. Nintendo and Sony work harder for my business anyway.
