Probably not for a while.

"Fifth Element Sony Release date: May 23, 2006"

LOL...I finally broke down and bought the most recent edition. Serves me right.

My guess is that if they don't hurry up and get Blu-Ray titles out, it may not even be Vol. 1. Why? Apparently, when the Weinsteins left Miramax and formed The Weinstein Company, they took the video rights to several titles with them, including the Kill Bills. Now, it may be the situation that BVHE still has the right to release the Kill Bills, but only in a limited window of opportunity. As we all know, there were more people who liked Vol 1 than Vol 2, so BVHE may simply be pushing Vol 1 to capitalize on the investment in Blu-Ray.

Or, perhaps, they intend to put both parts on the same disc? They do hold 50 GBs, guys.

Kill Bill Vol. 1 could be a better demo test case than Vol. 2. Like a lot of other Miramax DVDs (Cold Mountain, Hero, Gangs of New York), KBv1 was a nasty filtered mess of a transfer that lost a ton of high-frequency detail when one of the engineers got a bit over-enthusiastic with some of the tools at his disposal. Vol 2, in comparison, looked noticeably better. If there was a clean, unfiltered new tranfer (or at least new post-processing job) of KBv1 for Blu-Ray, it'd make for a much more impressive A-B comparison with DVD than Vol. 2 would.

Of course, I doubt the Disney/Miramax folks picked Vol. 1 for that reason.

Meh, to be totally honest, I dont even think we need a new format (let alone 2) right now.

Dvd is just great....and as great at Hd-Dvd/ Blu-Ray will be....its too damn early and these things are gonna flop right out of the gate. It'll take a while for them to gain popularity.

Remember, most people dont even own HD Tv's...making this new jump pretty much useless.

As far as backing up files and such on computers...hell, i think these are great...but for the home theater....its pointless at this current time.

So what exactly is the difference between HD-DVD/Blu-Ray and regular DVD? So far as I can tell, it just sounds like a DVD that can hold more stuff....

I'm 32.
I've owned a car w/ an 8-track player and several cars w/ cassette players never one w/ a cd player.
I remember taping SW w/ a cassette recorder so I could listen to it over and over. ( With several "Shut up I'm recording this!" )
Never owned a Beta Max but had a top loading VHS. First movie I ever saw on it was ESB. My first time seeing it.
Bypassed laserdisc completely. (Did work w/ someone who made me a copy of The Doors movie on VHS from Laserdisc)
Didn't own a DVD player until about 2 years ago. ( Now I own 2 but only have 1 TV)
For over a year I didn't own a TV just see if I could do it.(Read over a 100 hundred books in that time)
Still don't have cable (over 4 years)
Just got my first computer 6 months ago.
Now its HD DVD and BluRay.
Whatever.

He was excited because it was in widescreen and the definition was so much better. I remember him coming into work excited because you could see the sailboat when they're were on the beach. I haven't seen in it in a while, but talk about it often.

Unless you own an HDTV.

And even though HDTV sales have been going quite well thanks to the popularity of DVD, it's much easier to sell HDTVs when you can actually offer HD content to go along with them.

There's nothing wrong with enjoying DVD and sticking with it, but you greatly underestimate the size and potential of the HD-on-disc market.

It's not just more data, it's more resolution and much higher quality audio. DVD is limited to 480 lines of resolution, either interlaced or progressive. BluRay and HD-DVD allow for resolutions up to 1080p. The improvement on screen sizes under 42" isn't as apparent, but blow it up to 60" or larger, and good HD material is stunning.

If you're thinking you'll never own a TV that big, consider the fact you can buy a 720p LCD projector right now for $1500. Think about what it will cost in a year or two. Or five.

DVD has been around for about a decade, and while it will continue for many years, HDTVs are widely available at reasonable prices and now is the perfect time to start the rollout of HD-on-disc.

Makes sense...but no matter what happens...a format war is still stupid.

Very much so, especially since it was DVD that revitalized the home theater market to begin with - more specifically, requiring a new reciever to decode the new AC3 soundtracks - with FIVE speakers, no less.
