They're offshoots, alright; just don't call them sects. There are no sects of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (the official name); Mormonism doesn't come in different "flavours". One of the tenets of the Mormon church is "being subject to kings, presidents, rulers and magistrates in obeying, honouring and sustaining the law." Since polygamy is illegal, the Church does not practice it. End of story.
