AWESOME work, Faceman. Roofless never looked so good.

That IS the Miramax release you're working with there, in widescreen. And that's all I really need - no need to restore the pan & scan, unless you want to use it (probably a better transfer) to restore The Princess and the Cobbler for some reason. =)

Out of curiosity, what are you doing to the image to get it looking like that? Is it difficult, do you have to change settings often or does one setting work for a whole film?

I'd also really, really like to know what programs and filters you're using. That looks excellent. My only complaint is that the hair looks a little blurred, but I have a hunch that that is the case with the transfer itself, and it just isn't as noticeable with it being all washed out. Either way, won't be able to tell when it's in motion. FANTASTIC JOB.

Tell those pussies at Disney to suck it.

Also, just out of curiosity, what's the runtime on the Recobbled rough cut?

I just wanted to drop and say thank you for creating the recobbled version. I have resisted watching any of the released versions, instead trying to find a copy of the work print (and waiting and hoping that Disney was going to release a restored version). To say that I can't wait to see your version is an understatement.

I'm really glad that people keep coming out of the woodwork with more footage and different cuts - although I'm sorry that means more work for you. It's all worth it.

Well, Disney should make this film a priority, but I'd imagine that it would be a major restoration project on the level of Lawrence of Arabia. The film has the potential to be a very successful box office hit, as well as an award-winner. All it would take is Disney to do it right. But they aren't, yet, so this is why a Recobbled Cut is happening.

None of this works on a Mac as far as I can tell.


I'd like to be there for this airing, but viewing your bumper or viewing GBS-TV, I only get audio, no video.

Oh, I didn't answer your question a few posts back.

I put that version of the "One Eyes Dance" in the pencil test reel because it's a different mix/recording. It's from the Calvert work in progress. It's not actually any better quality than what I've got now!

Mullah Nasrudin scans!

Here are some nice big scans from The Pleasantries of The Incredible Mullah Nasrudin (and a few from The Exploits of the Incomparable Mullah Nasrudin thanks to gamewiz) ...

Richard Williams illustrated these books by Idries Shah in the late 60s, in a very loose cartoony style ... he planned to make a Nasrudin feature, but when negotiations fell through it became The Thief.

In these scans you'll see very early versions of The Thief, the courtiers, Yumyum and others, and get a taste of the humor and wisdom of the wise fool, the Sufi mystic, Mullah Nasrudin.

David "Faceman" Cooper has completed his restorations of Arabian Knight widescreen, Arabian Knight pan & scan, and the workprint.

I had said not to bother with the workprint since I expect a slightly better one, but I'm glad he did it - I'm very interested in seeing what quality he was able to get out of such a poor source.

He'll be sending them out on mondayish. Guess I'll see them wednesdayish.

I'm spending the time making further improvements to my cut of part 2.

Just an update... I'm dropping I Drew Roger Rabbit and Animation Art from the marathon. This is mainly because I'm still working on Animation Art and I got a lot of other work (like a film theory exam).

However, everything else is staying put. I'm almost thinking that re-airing the Recobbled Cut in lieu of the two documentaries would be a better idea. Probably good for west coast people.

Ok, MAYBE I'll get them ready in time. Pinocchio was returned to the library, so now I have the DVD in my hands. I have Animated Art pretty much laid out in Vegas (everything except the film clips), so it's just a matter of dropping in the bits from Moving Day, Fantasia, Snow White, Dumbo, and that one clip from Thief.

Perhaps I can put them before A Christmas Carol or something.

One question... I haven't gone through I Drew Roger Rabbit much yet, but do you think it would be worth pillarboxing in 16x9 in order to allow clips from WFRR and Thief to be full-rez (everything else centered)?

For the hell of it I decided to check it out. Right now, they're playing the Miramax cut. Now, I had watched the intro of the M-Cut, but I had only watched the beginning narration about the golden balls and shut it off. On GBS, when I got on the feed, they were somewhere in the middle of the movie, and Tack and the Thief were talking....god damn. I made it about 30 seconds in before I shut it off. The voices are so, so, bad. So bad.

I want to see this thing, but I can't handle the horror of the Miramax cut, and I don't want to watch the workprint. Please hurry up OCP....please.

Now, when you go back to work on the beginning, are you going to clean up the opening (the square of black from the workprint that surrounds the images)? It just bugs the crap out of me...

Looks like the Recobbled Cut is bringing in some of the best ratings and viewership ever on GBS-TV. At the same time, Arabian Knight got the lowest rating ever. Worse than our print of Manos: The Hands of Fate.

I just want to thank Garrett and Chris for their help in this. I predicted at least 100 viewers... we got nearly 150 for the first Recobbled Cut showing. A little webcast stream getting that many viewers for an obscure film is important. I really think this shows the love that would justify Disney to properly finish the film.

You know, if we found a way to get letters to Richard Williams, it would be awesome if 150 letters were sent to him thanking him for the film.

CORRECTION:

On the Encore showing, we're getting 170 viewers.

I have fiddled with the blacks before, but to hide that issue, I'd have to complete screw up the black levels on my monitor.

BTW, something I noticed a while ago in the trailer, and which I'm shocked no one else has mentioned--

The Animatrix rips off a shot that is featured in OCP's trailer. Remember where the shot with the horseman riding in slow motion?

The Thief and the Cobbler is kind of a cult film for animators, especially now that Williams' book is being used as a textbook. I'm not surprised really.

There's stuff in Animatrix that seems lifted from the "Nightmare" segment of Robot Carnival. But the same animators could have worked on both projects.
