It's a rule for comming of age movies. Someone always has to die.

Which is precisely why I hated Dead Poets Society. It was so rote, maudlin and predictable. I wanted to hurl at the end of the movie, or at the very least shout, "OH, PLEASE!!!!"

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

good will hunting there is another great movie. no one died in that one and it was very much a comming of age movie. well more of finding oneself, but thats what comming of age movies are.

i dont think someone has to die at the end of ALL coming of age things. some great examples are the catcher in the rye, and about a boy.

When I was watching Dead Poets Society before he killed himself, it was taking so long I yelled: just do it already!

The most powerful movie of last year was Munich. I think it had a lot to say about the nature of violence and how people and nations react to terrorism. This is the kind of movie that our current and future political leaders should watch and think about.

I'd have to agree with those who hated Dead Poets Society. I was in high school when I first saw it and believed that Mr. Keating deserved to be fired. Also, I hate whenever movies indulge in bizarre suicide rituals that seem take ten minutes. The way the suicide of Robert Sean Leonard is shot, it is almost pornographically nostalgic.

Worse than this, though, was the estrogen-laced ripoff known as Mona Lisa Smile. Horrible, horrible movie.

As for last year's most powerful... while I have not yet seen Munich, I would have to say Crash. Soul stirring. That's the best way to think of it.

Others from past years... not a film, but, Band of Brothers; Cool Hand Luke; Empire of the Sun; Far From Heaven; the original Manchurian Candidate; Passion of the Christ; The Red Violin; Requiem for a Dream; and To Kill a Mockingbird.
"You fell victim to one of the classic blunders, the most famous of which is 'Never get involved in a land war in Asia'."

“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

Somewhere In Time had me in tears, and I"m not easily moved to tears.

Red heads ROCK. Blondes do not rock. Nuff said.
