The Thief and the Cobbler: Recobbled Director's Cut (Released) — Page 13

There's actually some good animation in there (check out "No Girl's Toy" by Richard and some of the camel stuff by Art) ... but it's all obscured by terrible coloring, backgrounds, xerox "inking" ... the nuts and bolts of some of the motion is okay, but it's really hard to tell considering the CHEAPNESS of the whole affair. If Richard had cared and had all the time and $$ in teh world he could have done brilliant photography like on The Thief .... but this was a rush job which was taken away from him late in the game, so it is what it is.

Which is, um, not really good.

The Thief and the Cobbler: Recobbled Cut

I checked my mail box on Friday and suddenly I noticed a disc from OCPmovie in my box and I quickly openend it.

It was the Thief, i was like cool!!!!!!! sweet!!!!

I got home and my future wife wanted to play scrabble so I told her ok! But also that we watch the Thief, she was like what?

You want to wach a cartoon? I said it wasn't like any cartoon, you'll see.

So we started scrabble and turned on the Thief and suddenly she was paying more attention to the Thief. She told me that she thought the Thief was the funniest character and boy does he have some bad luck. Later, we eventually stoped playing scrabble and finished the Thief we both laughed at the damn Thief the whole time. We had a great time and she applauded the work of OCP.

Mt little two cents.

After I watched the workprint last week and then watched the Recobbled Cut I was amazed at the work you put into this.

I was in the total oh! My fuckin G!!! Mode

The stuff of the Thief that you worked hard on was the best, he is so fricken funny....

Thanks again Garret for another fine ass release and I hope you like the X-Men DVD I snet ya!!

peace

Remember, Highlander, you’ve both still got your full measure of life. Use it well, and your future will be glorious.

I'm thinking of doing a movie-only showing as soon as I get it encoded for GBS-TV... then have the full-blown event in a week or two afterward.

Also, it depends if I can make it look good, but I might be re-animating the end shot so it can be a commercial bump for GBSTV. Basically, using Photoshop to paste "GBS . TV" over "THE END" and try to animate it so it looks like The Thief is stealing the letters.

I haven't received my package yet but I rented the Miramax release to get things moving faster.

Oh dear Christ, get it OFF! GET IT OFF!

That's from one of the goddamn Calvert SONGS!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Lovely restoration work though.

Anyway Faceman, you'll get your package in a few hours. The version of Arabian Knight that you'll actually be restoring happens to be widescreen. (And not as nice as that pan & scan copy I'm sure, but it's widescreen.)

Amazing how much better your restoration looks. I'll probably piss myself when you get hold of the widescreen version!

I've sent you Princess and the Cobbler too, which has only been released in pan & scan. =( Actually if you wanted you could use your restoration of the Miramax Pan & Scan for Princess and the Cobbler. There are very few visual differences between the two and I could easily hack them together. (Princess is running at 25 fps rather than 24 though, it runs fast cos it's PAL. I've slowed the clips down for my own use, and slowed the audio down, since it's a better sound mix than Miramax's.)

Uh, the only thing we actually need the Princess and the Cobbler for is some stuff later in the film - all of it quite short - a shot of Zigzag meeting One Eye, the entire witch scene and some stuff in the March and Destruction of the One Eye War Machine, and the ending and credits. You don't have to restore these clips but I wouldn't mind. (You can tell the scenes easy in my edit, because they're pan & scan when the rest is widescreen!)

(Note: also only appearing in Princess - a quick shot of King Nod during the opening narration. This isn't in my restoration though.)

I've also sent you a million documentaries and other films which have awful picture quality. You can have fun with any of them too if you like. =)

I got them all today, there sure is alot to go through. Should be fun. I'll fix them all up and send back. What system are you using, PC or Mac? And you said you split the movie into chapters correct?
Author
Time
I'm using Mac.

And yeah, I split Arabian Knight up into the 12 component chapters and did them as 24p PhotoJPEG Quicktime files.

Just saving back as M2V for DVD use would be fine, as I can rip that as PhotoJPEG, but if you can save as PhotoJPEG that would be even better. =)

For all the others, you can just save them as DVDs ...

Excited to see what you can do!

Today I got a paperback copy of The Pleasantries of the Incredible Mullah Nasrudin, by Idries Shah, with illustrations by Richard Williams and Errol LeCain (1968).

A very nice book, a very entertaining read since it's all about the wisdom of the fool .... Teaching truths through zenlike humor.

The illustrations are whimsical and nice and a good thing to have for any fan of The Thief .... since of course The Thief grew out of Richard's aborted plan to make a film about Mullah Nasrudin (it fell apart when people related to Shah were asking for too much of a cut of the film's gross).

The Thief himself appears here in early form - in two stories as a thief, and in many other illustrations as a townsperson (there are also other characters dressed like the Thief). Other Thieflike character designs are in evidence throughout - people who look like Zigzag's courtiers. There's even a drawing which looks like The Thief talking to a very primitive Princess Yumyum.

There are artistic patterns which were used later as background design elements in The Thief (the "rose window" from when The Thief steals Yumyum's shoes is there on one page) ...

It's nice to see, and I'll go ahead and scan it. If you can find a used copy of this book for cheap somewhere, with Williams' illustrations intact, I'd recommend it.

(The copy I got sadly replaces Williams' original cover with one by another artist, but it's intact inside.)

BTW, I found that the laserdisc port on the MySpleen torrent lacks all the poor contrast and color problems. If you used that as a reference for re-timing the 16x9 DVD footage, it might help. Although, upon further examination, I'm wondering why Princess Yum-Yum has glaucoma in her eyes in the all-new Calvert footage.

By the way, if I can speed through the re-edits of the two documentaries, I think the "Evening with Richard Williams" can happen by Sunday.

Well, Patrick has made his official announcement - The Thief and the Cobbler Recobbled, and an entire evening of related material, will premiere on GBS.TV on March 19th ... celebrating Richard Williams' birthday, I believe ... from 8PM to 1AM eastern standard time, 11PM to 3AM pacific (late where I am!) ...

Care to make the announcement here too, Patrick?

I'm surprised you're not airing A Christmas Carol, but I can tell that time is limited ... maybe next time ... rather have that than The Pink Panther tho' ...

Speaking of announcements, where are you at on the project, OCP? Are you waiting for the new tapes to arrive before you proceed any further, or what?

Ok, a few revisions...

The whole marathon is SATURDAY NIGHT, which is MARCH 18th. Saturday gets a higher viewership, so that's why. However, only the Recobbled Cut will be re-aired at the same time on Sunday. It's also worth noting that they can be re-aired any time afterwards.

Also, I found that the version comparison would be kind of boring, but I might do it as an extra for your DVD set. I finally sat down to watch the song scenes and now I can't get the Brigand song out of my head (don't worry, I won't shoot myself until AFTER the marathon). So, I'm thinking it'll be more effective to show Arabian Knight right afterward to drive home the complete molestation made to the film.

I forgot about A Christmas Carol....

Anyway, here's the new schedule:

6:30 PM - A Christmas Carol
7:00 PM - The Thief and the Cobbler: Recobbled Cut
8:30 PM - Arabian Knight
9:45 PM - The Thief Who Never Gave Up documentary
10:40 PM - Commercial Reel and Pink Panther titles
11:15 PM - I Drew Roger Rabbit
11:45 PM - Animating Art

Also, there will be a few surprises. I'll insert the pencil tests reel, trailers, and maybe the Charge of the Light Brigade animation as filler. Basically, keep 6:30-12:30 open.

It'll be re-aired on Sunday at 7:00 PM, too. More showings if it's a really big hit.

One other thing... during the pencil test reel, there's an excellent quality clip of the "Dance of the One-Eyes" music. Where did you find it?

No, I haven't stopped, I'm choosing music and further refining the edit ... but yes, I am a little bit hamstrung until Stanch can come up with his best copy. Still, I suppose these are the kind of delays we WANT to have.

It's nice that it's airing on saturday, but sunday would have been Richard Williams' birthday ... much more appropriate. Oh well.

I'm glad it's still running on sunday - maybe with a birthday dedication?

I can't believe you're showing all of Arabian Knight. Shudder.

Not that I mind, but I can't actually watch that ... I wonder who can ...a

Since I can't sign off on my edit yet until the new tape is in, I'm doing something else related, and turning The Thief and the Cobbler into a Lucasarts adventure game, like The Secret of Monkey Island.

It's cool to see how far you've come on this. I'm really looking forward to seeing it.

I believe I saw the Richard Williams version of a "A Christmas Carol" when I was really young--I think it might've been on the Family Channel at Christmastime. I've looked around for that version, but I couldn't find out what it was--but I'm positive that this one has to be it. I oughta check out that online tv airing--but it will definitely be nice to have on the DVD.

Do you think I should watch Arabian Knight first to compare, or would I actually probably have a better experience seeing the Recobbled Cut first?

Looking good! Keep up the good work!

Cheers Musicman! I have some storytelling nitpicks with his A Christmas Carol, but it really is one of the best. A classic.

And no, no one should watch Arabian Knight under any circumstances.

I saw it before I saw the real version ... my recommendation - Wait for it until you've seen the real thing.

The IMDB finally updated the cast listing! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112389/combined

Now all the Arabian Knight/The Princess and the Cobbler voice talent is listed under "re-edited version" and all the original cast is listed! Now we just need to wait on the rest of the artist credits and the title change... good riddance to bad rubbish if they get rid of the Arabian Knight title and drop it into the alternate titles list. Fans can do their part, too. Add quotes, trivia, etc. Goofs would be a good idea in order to expose all the drafting mistakes in the Calvert inks like the glaucoma eyes.

Also, a few updates...

The Thief Who Never Gave Up, A Christmas Carol, and the camera tests reel are uploaded onto the GBS-TV server. I decided to not touch the Recobbled Cut at all, so it'll be as-is on the rough cut. Whenever the newer version is ready, we can just switch it out.

As for the other stuff:

I'm going to do an overhaul on Animating Art tonight. The only problem is that someone checked out Pinocchio from the library, so I'm going to have to wait. However, I'm going to look through all my other Disney DVD's and hope the clips exist in a documentary or something. I'm hoping to have the reconstruction done by tonight. Tomorrow, I'll do I Drew Roger Rabbit, which ought to be easier.

Since the Animating Art source is so poor, would it be a big deal if I reduced the picture and windowboxed it in order to make the image look a little better?

Eep - I don't know Patrick - I wouldn't shrink it down much smaller than the overscan area.

My my, what an insanely complicated voice cast the IMDB listing now has. =) They should split this up into two separate movies ... or even three, since there are three casts. jeez.

(Mona Marshall and Ed E. Carroll are still only credited as "voice", for their participation in the Princess version.)

If anyone reading this has any info on the 4min film the Dermis Probe, let me know.

Nothing fancy, but here's a short commercial I put together for the "Thief" evening:

http://rapidshare.de/files/15620185/Thief_Bump_2.nsv.html

(You need Winamp to play it)

We just aired it on www.gbs.tv (GBS-TV) and it instantly got 5/5 ratings.

By the way, as I was looking for the clip, I noticed this:

I haven't laughed so hard for a while. Ken Harris was a genius.

FYI, don't mention myspleen on Something Awful. I don't think the moderators care much about the "Thief" situation, but if it's reported, we might get in trouble. I'm just going to post a link to this thread there.

I've changed my comment.

Great Thief drawing - that's an early one judging from the style - I think all the Thief animations in that scene were early tests, done without any story in mind. Most of them were cut out of the workprint, but resurfaced in the Calvert cuts.

That scene was a MESS to edit in my version, because Calvert had rewritten the scene entirely for some reason. His version being twice as long. So I had a dialogue scene where people were doing the exact same things, but with very different dialogue and crap animation - plus about a minute of random original Williams animation that wasn't in the workprint .... and the scene is nonsensically edited in any version you watch. I didn't quite make it all fit together ...
