Heat: The Action Edit (Released)

 (Edited)

Hello. I’m hard at work on an edited version of Heat (1995) that will take some of the drama out of the film and make it more of an action thriller. The drama involving Chris (Val Kilmer) and Neil (De Niro) will remain, as they are very important aspects of their characters. As for the character played by Al Pacino, his family drama is rather unimportant to the overall story. His character doesn’t change from any of the drama. So, all that gets chopped. Bye, bye Natalie. You played the whiney, conceded and overly-dramatic character pretty well - but your scenes take up too much time. The mother of that character is a goner as well. There are also several scenes that I think can go to help trim a few things. Overall, I’m estimating a good 20 minutes saved.

I will let everyone know when the project is done and the torrent is uploaded.

Sounds good.. I agree, I don't see the point of those scenes as they don't add anything to the story. The scenes don't flesh out Pacino's character, or add to his motivations in any way, or alter his behavior or attitudes. It just shows he's the stereotypical "cop with family problems" guy, but mainly just slow the film down. If his daughter or wife had been put into jeopardy, the scenes may have served a purpose, but every time I watch the film I just wonder why they're there.

Here is my second fan-edit. This time it is the film, "Heat", from 1995. It stars Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro and Val Kilmer.

I hope you enjoy!

It is in DVD format already, nearly 4.2GB in size. Just burn and watch.

I can't believe people are posting on The Pirate Bay and saying I'm an idiot for cutting down this movie, lol! Do they not see where it says "fan-edit" or that I say it's to make an action movie out of it? They don't get it, and that's too bad. If they knew how many times I had to watch this over 3 days, they'd be a little more sympathetic.

I haven't seen this, nor can I spare the bandwidth to grab it, but it sounds worthwhile. Most comments on the net are usually negative, those with something positive to say never get round to posting comments unfortunately.

I think this sounds like one of the best ideas for a fan edit ever! I'll go grab it now! Now, someone needs to run with my Hulk ideas. I think that would really work.

Sorry.

I have to agree. Cutting Heat is NOT what people would think of. If anything, it has a following that would want MORE and not less. It'd be like taking Scarface and making it a more sympathetic movie. That's just not what it is. Making it an action movie cheapens it. It's a VERY very well made, acted and written movie as is. Don't touch it.

Yeah, the movie has become something of a classic over the years and in the eyes of many, editing it would be sacrilege.

Personally, I don't mind. It sounded like there was reason enough to experiment with it.

And that is where tastes differ. HEAT was boooooring and loooong and it could have been much better, if it wasn't so much about these two characters, who are just not interesting (and deNiro and Pacino don't like each other anyway). I think an action update could fit this movie very well. Go on, Yoshimi, edit Indiana Jones ;-)

Yeah.

Who needs great acting plus character and plot development when you can just throw a ton of action in there when no one speaks.

The great acting is still there, the character development is still there and the plot development is still there. The only story arch removed was the one involving Vincent's home life. It's cliche and does not develop the character at all. He starts as a cop who is over-worked and obsessed, and finishes that way. Therefore, that's all we really need to see of him. Yes, his home life is a disaster. With Neil (De Niro) & Chris (Kilmer), their characters deviate from themselves in the end. Therefore, Ashley & Amy stay.

This was based solely on my opinion. Great film? Yes. Longer than necessary? Yes.

It is still well over 2 hours long. Please don't assume that I made into a "mindless Arnold" movie, as that is far from the truth. It is just an experiment.

Hey Yoshimi,

I just watched your Heat fan edit and I have one question and a few comments for you. First off, what was your source material? The picture looks a little grainy and soft and the audio is Dolby Stereo. It seems to me you took this from the laserdisc or non-special-edition DVD. Am I right? Just curious. Second, I think you did a phenomenal job on the editing. The edits are seemless and well chosen. I couldn't even tell that Pacino's character's home life was removed, it is as if those scenes never existed. Truly, this sped up the pacing and enjoyment of the film. Bravo on a job well done.

While Heat is a well made movie it is by no means a flawless film requiring no edits. I'm glad you took it upon yourself to edit out most of the garbage. The remaining garbage was stuff you couldn't edit out, like Pacino's ridiculous, over the top, corny acting (normally I love him I just think he did a terrible job here), or like the idiotic notion that a high-class professional criminal like DeNiro's character would risk everything for petty revenge. I could never understand why this film is so revered by some people when for the most part it is long and boring and only has one mediocre action sequence. I'm sure I'll take some flak for those statements

Anyway, my point is don't let the negative comments get you down. You did an excellent job and accomplished what you set out to do, which was make a more action-oriented, faster-paced film. As long as you are happy with your edit, that is all that really matters.

Thanks for your comments.

Yes, the source was not the SE DVD release (I scratched my friend's copy by dropping it and had to procure a copy by other means).

I'm glad you enjoyed it

Hurmph. The 1st time i seen Heat i turned it off after an hour or so and slated it to everyone who cared to listen. The whole build up of the charecters bored me to tears. I even gave the film a second chance - and i now rate this as one of my top films ever made. I got the whole thing wrong. Yeah, i agree its streached out. But the build up of Pachino vs DeNiro let me witness 2 fantastic actors going head to head, and seeing both sides of story, showing both good points and bad points for each charecter. The musical score fitted perfectly with the feel of the film. The bank robbery shoot out section was the most gritty, realistic and utterly involving piece of cinimaography ever made on film. And by the time the stand off arrived i didn't want either charecter to die. Add exellent performances by shabby actors like Micheal Madson, Nancy Travis, Val Kilmer and even Natalie Portman!.......

Michael Mann is a ever growing talent, therfore i can't wait for Miami Vice

I cant wait to see if this is a butchured or bettered vertion of the film. Either way Yoshimi thank you for the work and effort you've put into this edit, and i only hope this experience doesn't put you off doing any future projects by the critisism you've got on the Pirate Bay (98% of which consist of 'takers' -never 'givers' in my experience).

Thanks Darth,

... but...

neither Michael Madson, nor the wonderful Nancy Travis (So, I Married An Axe Murderer - she was cool!) were in Heat. You might be thinking of Ashley Judd or Diane Verona and either Tom Sizemore or Kevin Gage.

I hope you are able to enjoy the edit regardless. I too really like the film. The edit came about because someone here posted it in the wishlist. I found that it was very doable... so I did it! lol

But that's the point. He does not change, while everything (and everybody) around him changes. If you notice, at the end of the movie, his family has changed. I think you cut out a very important statement of the movie.

Yoshimi, I just saw miami vice and i definitely think you need to work your magic on that one too, lol. the amount of useless crap in that movie was ridiculous, but underneath there was a great cop movie.
I'm always looking to trade my edits, if you don't want to get them from a torrent. PM or e-mail!

Maybe you should not watch the movie under the assumption that it would be an action movie, or that it would be a remake of the original miami vice....

I wasn't expecting either, I'm not that nostalgic of the show and I wouldn't consider Collateral an action movie yet that's my favorite of Mann's films. What i do expect of Michael Mann however is a solid, interesting plot and well developed characters. Both of these items i found to be almost totally nonexistant in Miami Vice. Of course, that is just me, and i can understand why some might like it, so whatever.

I'd watch Heat: The Action edit over Vice any day though, I will say that.

It were just suggestions, the movie is not released yet in germany. I read in a lot of boards that people are expecting something the movie can never deliver, therefore I thought you might have had the wrong expectations of the movie.
Or maybe the movie just really is that bad

And yes, Manhunter is really cool. But IMHO it could need some tweaking, because I think some of the scenes, that are missing in the directors cut (but were present in the theatrical cut) really made sense and could enhance the DC.

Hello there,

I just made a 2-hour edit of Heat, what I named “A Concise Cut”, then found this topic by accident.

Although quite different from the OP’s approach (which is not available anymore on the piratebay link), I would recommend seeing it to those interested.

https://vimeo.com/273525046

It focuses more on the main characters of Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro.
I believe the original intention was an emotional urban western, but the official cut spends almost an hour establishing supporting characters that are now only seen when together with, and important for the two (anti)heroes.
